Sunday, May 28 Bulletin
The Order for the Worship of God
Faith Presbyterian Church 9:30 a.m., May 28, 2006 We invite all into a common discipline of silence as we gather for worship. Then we will greet and welcome one another into the presence of the Lord.Prelude “Antienne” --Eugene Gigout (France, 1844-1925)
“Sonata, Movement II” --Paul Hindemith (Germany, 1895-1963)
Greeting & Invocation
Hymn # 501 “Oh, for a Thousand Tongues to Sing”
Psalter: Psalm 24 (read responsively) Donna Lofgren
1The earth is the Lord’s and all that is in it, the world, and those who live in it;
2for he has founded it on the seas, and established it on the rivers.
3Who shall ascend the hill of the Lord? And who shall stand in his holy place?
4Those who have clean hands and pure hearts, who do not lift up their souls to what is false, and do not swear deceitfully.
5They will receive blessing from the Lord, and vindication from the God of their salvation.
6Such is the company of those who seek him, who seek the face of the God of Jacob.
7Lift up your heads, O gates! and be lifted up, O ancient doors! that the King of glory may come in.
8Who is the King of glory? The Lord, strong and mighty, the Lord, mighty in battle.
9Lift up your heads, O gates! and be lifted up, O ancient doors! that the King of glory may come in.
10Who is this King of glory? The Lord of hosts, he is the King of glory.
Special Music Wednesday Morning Prayer Group
Prayer for Illumination Donna Lofgren
Old Testament Lesson: Isaiah 51: 1 – 6
Donna Lofgren
1Listen to me, you that pursue righteousness, you that seek the Lord. Look to the rock from which you were hewn, and to the quarry from which you were dug. 2Look to Abraham your father and to Sarah who bore you; for he was but one when I called him, but I blessed him and made him many. 3For the Lord will comfort Zion; he will comfort all her waste places, and will make her wilderness like Eden, her desert like the garden of the Lord; joy and gladness will be found in her, thanksgiving and the voice of song.
4Listen to me, my people, and give heed to me, my nation; for a teaching will go out from me, and my justice for a light to the peoples. 5I will bring near my deliverance swiftly, my salvation has gone out and my arms will rule the peoples; the coastlands wait for me, and for my arm they hope. 6Lift up your eyes to the heavens, and look at the earth beneath; for the heavens will vanish like smoke, the earth will wear out like a garment, and those who live on it will die like gnats; but my salvation will be forever, and my deliverance will never be ended.
Lector: “This is the Word of God.”
Congregation: “Thanks be to God for His Word.”
Children’s Sermon
Hymn # 219 “As Moses Raised the Serpent Up”
New Testament Lesson: John 3: 17 – 21
17“Indeed, God did not send the Son into the world to condemn the world, but in order that the world might be saved through him. 18Those who believe in him are not condemned; but those who do not believe are condemned already, because they have not believed in the name of the only Son of God. 19And this is the judgment, that the light has come into the world, and people loved darkness rather than light because their deeds were evil. 20For all who do evil hate the light and do not come to the light, so that their deeds may not be exposed. 21But those who do what is true come to the light, so that it may be clearly seen that their deeds have been done in God.”
Sermon “What is it to Believe in Jesus? ” Pastor Robertson
(Continuing a series of sermons on the Gospel of John)

Gathering of Tithes and Offerings
Offertory “I Want To Walk As A Child Of The Light”
(Words in Supplement, #61) --Kathleen Thomerson
It is the shining that they hear - more than
the multiples of words sincerely spoken;
it is the way of one who walks in light
that breaks and scatters.
It is the hush of the unfettered voice
of God that they see. They follow, knowing it.
(Judith Dupree)
Response
Father, I adore you, lay my life before you.
How I love you.
Jesus, I adore you, lay my life before you.
How I love you.

Postlude “Salvation Unto Us Has Come” --Dietrich Buxtehude (Germany, 1637-1707)
Salvation unto us has come
By God's free grace and favor;
Good works cannot avert our doom,
They help and save us never.
Faith looks to Jesus Christ alone,
Who did for all the world atone;
He is our one redeemer.
Since Christ has full atonement made
And brought to us salvation,
Each Christian therefore may be glad
And build on this foundation.
Your grace alone, dear Lord, I plead,
Your death is now my life indeed,
For you have paid my ransom.

Next Sunday’s Sermon will be on:
“Status in the Kingdom of God”
Pastor Stuart D. Robertson
Worship
…is the quickening of conscience by God’s holiness;
the nourishment of mind with His truth;
the purifying of imagination by His beauty;
the opening of the heart to His love;
the surrender of the will to His purpose;
and all of this gathered up in adoration—
the most selfless emotion of which our nature is capable, and therefore the chief remedy for that self-centeredness
which is our original sin and the source of all actual sin.”
William Temple
