Sunday, June 18 Bulletin

The Order for the Worship of God

Faith Presbyterian Church 9:30 a.m., June 18, 2006
We invite all into a common discipline of silence as we gather for worship. Then we will greet and welcome one another into the presence of the Lord.

Prelude “Pavane” --Gabriel Faure´

“Fairest Lord Jesus” --David Johnson

Bringing in the Bible

Greeting & Invocation

Hymn # 3 “Glorious Things of Thee are Spoken”

Confession of Faith Question 21 - Heidelberg Catechism
Emily Matthews
Question: What is true faith?
Answer: It is not only a certain knowledge by which I accept as true all that God has revealed to us in his Word, but also a wholehearted trust which the Holy Spirit creates in me through the gospel, that, not only to others, but to me also God has given the forgiveness of sins, everlasting righteousness and salvation, out of sheer grace solely for the sake of Christ’s saving work.

Anthem “My Only Comfort” written by Grieke Toebes

Prayer for Illumination Emily Matthews

Old Testament Lesson: Amos 7: 10 - 17
Emily Matthews
10Then Amaziah, the priest of Bethel, sent to King Jeroboam of Israel, saying, “Amos has conspired against you in the very center of the house of Israel; the land is not able to bear all his words. 11For thus Amos has said, ‘Jeroboam shall die by the sword, and Israel must go into exile away from his land.’” 12And Amaziah said to Amos, “O seer, go, flee away to the land of Judah, earn your bread there, and prophesy there; 13but never again prophesy at Bethel, for it is the king’s sanctuary, and it is a temple of the kingdom.” 14Then Amos answered Amaziah, “I am no prophet, nor a prophet’s son; but I am a herdsman, and a dresser of sycamore trees, 15and the Lord took me from following the flock, and the Lord said to me, ‘Go, prophesy to my people Israel.’ 16“Now therefore hear the word of the Lord. You say, ‘Do not prophesy against Israel, and do not preach against the house of Isaac.” 17Therefore thus says the Lord: ‘Your wife shall become a prostitute in the city, and your sons and your daughters shall fall by the sword, and your land shall be parceled out by line; you yourself shall die in an unclean land, and Israel shall surely go into exile away from its land.’”

Lector: “This is the Word of God.”

Congregation: “Thanks be to God for His Word.”

Children’s Sermon

Hymn # 436 “This Is My Father’s World”

New Testament Lesson: John 4: 43 – 45
43When the two days were over, he went from that place to Galilee 44(for Jesus himself had testified that a prophet has no honor in the prophet’s own country). 45When he came to Galilee, the Galileans welcomed him, since they had seen all that he had done in Jerusalem at the festival; for they too had gone to the festival.

Sermon “Putting up with Nuisance Prophets” Pastor Robertson
(Continuing a series of sermons on the Gospel of John)

Gathering of Tithes and Offerings

Offertory “Behold With Joy” --Robert Powell

Behold with joy the peaceful state
of people, where Jehovah reigns,
Whose wisdom, power, and goodness great
their glorious freedom still maintains.
“Righteousness exalteth a nation: but sin is a reproach to any people” (Proverbs 14:34)

Response
Give thanks with a grateful heart,
Give thanks to the Holy One,
Give thanks because He’s given Jesus Christ, His Son.
(repeat)

And now let the weak say, “I am strong!”
Let the poor say, “I am rich, because of what the Lord had done
for us!”
Give thanks with a grateful heart,
Give thanks to the Holy One,
Give thanks because He’s given Jesus Christ, His Son.
Give thanks. Give thanks. ∆

Next Sunday’s Sermon will be on: "Believing on Time” Pastor Stuart D. Robertson

Worship
…is the quickening of conscience by God’s holiness;
the nourishment of mind with His truth;
the purifying of imagination by His beauty;
the opening of the heart to His love;
the surrender of the will to His purpose;
and all of this gathered up in adoration—
the most selfless emotion of which our nature is capable, and therefore the chief remedy for that self-centeredness which is our original sin and the source of all actual sin.” William Temple

Welcome
To all who are weary and seek rest; to all who mourn and long for comfort; to all who struggle and desire victory; to all who sin and need a Savior; to all who are idle and look for service; to all who are strangers and want fellowship; to all who hunger and thirst after righteousness; and to whosoever will come--this church opens wide her doors and offers her welcome in the name of Jesus Christ her Lord.
Guests please sign our guest book and join us in the Fellowship Hall after worship.
Babysitting is available during worship for infants up to 2-1/2 years old in the room behind the balcony. Children ages 2-1/2 through 5 will be in the Pre-School Nursery in the Education Wing. School age children worship with their parents.
