Sunday, July 30 Bulletin
The Order for the Worship of God
Faith Presbyterian Church 9:30 a.m., July 30, 2006
We invite all into a common discipline of silence as we gather for worship. Then we will greet and welcome one another into the presence of the Lord.
Prelude “Cantilena”
--Joseph Rheinberger (Germany,1839-1901)
“Abide, O Dearest Jesus” --Johann Pachelbel (Germany, 1653-1706)
Abide with us, our Savior, Nor let your mercy cease;
From Satan's might defend us, And grant our souls release.

Greeting & Invocation
Hymn # 253 “Praise to the Lord, the Almighty”
Confession of Faith: Heidelberg Catechism Question 103
Question: What does God require in the fourth commandment?
Answer: First, that the ministry of the gospel and Christian education be maintained, and that I diligently attend church, especially on the Lord’s day, to hear the Word of God, to participate in the holy Sacraments, to call publicly upon the Lord, and to give Christian service to those in need. Second, that I cease from my evil works all the days of my life, allow the Lord to work in me through his Spirit, and thus begin in this life the eternal Sabbath.
Special Music Sasha Dubikovsky
Prayer for Illumination Grieke Toebes
Old Testament Lesson: Isaiah 56: 1 - 8
Grieke Toebes
1Thus says the Lord: Maintain justice, and do what is right, for soon my salvation will come, and my deliverance be revealed. 2Happy is the mortal who does this, the one who holds it fast, who keeps the sabbath, not profaning it, and refrains from doing any evil.
3Do not let the foreigner joined to the Lord say, “The Lord will surely separate me from his people”; and do not let the eunuch say, “I am just a dry tree.” 4For thus says the Lord: To the eunuchs who keep my sabbaths, who choose the things that please me and hold fast my covenant, 5I will give, in my house and within my walls, a monument and a name better than sons and daughters; I will give them an everlasting name that shall not be cut off. 6And the foreigners who join themselves to the Lord, to minister to him, to love the name of the Lord, and to be his servants, all who keep the sabbath, and do not profane it, and hold fast my covenant— 7these I will bring to my holy mountain, and make them joyful in my house of prayer; their burnt offerings and their sacrifices will be accepted on my altar; for my house shall be called a house of prayer for all peoples. 8Thus says the Lord God, who gathers the outcasts of Israel, I will gather others to them besides those already gathered.
Lector: “This is the Word of God.”
Congregation: “Thanks be to God for His Word.”
Children’s Sermon
Hymn “My Only Comfort” Written by: Grieke Toebes
New Testament Lesson: John 5: 10 - 18
10So the Jews said to the man who had been cured, “It is the sabbath; it is not lawful for you to carry your mat.” 11But he answered them, “The man who made me well said to me, ‘Take up your mat and walk.’” 12They asked him, “Who is the man who said to you, ‘Take it up and walk’?” 13Now the man who had been healed did not know who it was, for Jesus had disappeared in the crowd that was there. 14Later Jesus found him in the temple and said to him, “See, you have been made well! Do not sin any more, so that nothing worse happens to you.” 15The man went away and told the Jews that it was Jesus who had made him well. 16Therefore the Jews started persecuting Jesus, because he was doing such things on the sabbath.
17But Jesus answered them, “My Father is still working, and I also am working.” 18For this reason the Jews were seeking all the more to kill him, because he was not only breaking the sabbath, but was also calling God his own Father, thereby making himself equal to God.

Response
The steadfast love of the Lord never ceases,
His mercies never come to an end.
They are new every morning, new every morning,
Great is Thy faithfulness, O Lord,
Great is Thy faithfulness. ∆

Apostles’ Creed
I believe in God, the Father Almighty, Maker of heaven and
earth, And in Jesus Christ his only Son our Lord; who was
conceived by the Holy Ghost, born of the Virgin Mary,
suffered under Pontius Pilate, was crucified, dead, and
buried; he descended into hell; the third day he rose again
from the dead; he ascended into heaven, and sitteth on the
right hand of God, the Father Almighty; from thence he
shall come to judge the quick and the dead. I believe in the
Holy Ghost; the holy catholic Church; the communion of
saints; the forgiveness of sins; the resurrection of the body;
and the life everlasting. Amen.

Worship
…is the quickening of conscience by God’s holiness;
the nourishment of mind with His truth;
the purifying of imagination by His beauty;
the opening of the heart to His love;
the surrender of the will to His purpose;
and all of this gathered up in adoration—
the most selfless emotion of which our nature is capable, and therefore the chief remedy for that self-centeredness which is our original sin and the source of all actual sin.” William Temple
