August Newsletter

Pastor's Pen

Our dear administrative assistant, Stephanie, reminds me that I must produce a Pastor’s Pen for the coming newsletter before Bonnie and I head off for a bit of holiday. I’m much addled by denominational matters these days, but I’d like to spare you more of this here since a letter has already gone out above my signature regarding church and the larger body to which be belong. Today before we leave in the wee hours tomorrow morning I must make about 120 chappattees, an Indian pita-like bread. We’ll freeze these and they’ll feed breakfast to fifty or so nostalgia-ridden former classmates from boarding school days in Chikalda, a hill station in India. They will nostalgically dip pieces of the chappattee into a mix of whipped cream and ghurl—which is like molasses. This is really yummy! My family loves it when I make this for Saturday morning breakfast. About 74 of us who attended Sunrise School at one time or another are gathering for a reunion this coming weekend (July 14 – 16). I’ll be one of the older ones. I’m such a relic. I’ve not seen any of these former classmates since 1954. I wonder if anyone will have changed—for sure I’m a dead ringer of the guy I looked like at age twelve. Then Bonnie and I will see relatives as well as catching some time by ourselves to be chums again without the hustle and bustle of ordinary life. I hope you too get some time to be refreshed. Jesus once said to His disciples, “Come apart to a deserted place all by yourselves and rest a while” (Mark 6: 31). But their anticipated refreshment was cut short by mobs of people. Rest is hard to come by. There is always some kind of duty that beckons. But it is good to remember how dispensable I am. These are addled times in our denomination. A thought has occurred to me that I share with you. If we will all be more faithful in doing what it is Christians gather to do in churches, we will come away from this time of testing a stronger congregation than when the difficult times began.

Clerk's Corner

The Congregation extends a very warm welcome to the following individuals who were received into membership of Faith Presbyterian Church on July 9, 2006: Carol Barker, Barbara Knox, Ken Sandel, Tammy Sandel, Marcella Verplank and Robert Verplank.

At a special meeting on July 11, 2006 the Session carefully considered the appropriate response to the recent action by the General Assembly that provides the Presbyteries and individual congregations the freedom to interpret the Fidelity and Chastity Clause in the Book of Order. Many options were explored but no specific action was recommended at this time. The Congregation will have the final say regarding any concrete steps that might be taken. Pastor Robertson has addressed a letter to the Congregation that deals with these issues.

A special Congregational meeting is to be held after Sunday morning services on August 27, 2006 for informational purposes. Any follow-up action will be postponed to a subsequent meeting.

On the first Sunday of August Pastor Robertson completes twenty years of devoted service as a Pastor to Faith Presbyterian Church, to the larger Lafayette Community, and to the Presbytery of Wabash Valley. We are thankful for his many contributions.

Pastor Robertson will assume his duties as Chaplain in Residence of the Presbyterian House at the Chautauqua Institute in Chautauqua, New York, August 5 – 12, 2006.

Sunday school for children resumes on August 20, 2006. However, because August 20 is Mission Sunday, and because the Congregational Meeting is scheduled for August 27, the Adult Sunday School will commence on September 3, 2006.

The next Session meeting is scheduled for August 1, 2006.
J.M. Honig, Clerk of Session

Many thanks to all who helped with the July picnic on the patio. We enjoyed the music of Glenn, Erin, and Jordan Sparks as they led us in worship. The grill masters of Terry Stewart and Ron Smith made sure our dinner was cooked to perfection. Vacation Bible School 2006

Around fifty children from ten different churches, taught by and cared for by a staff of nineteen adults, seven teen helpers and ten support people, had a wonderful week of Vacation Bible School, June 26 – 30. This year we used a ready-made curriculum from Standard Publishing Company, called “Trading Places,” and how Jesus makes a world of difference in our lives. We studied stories of Ruth, Esther, David, some disciples, and Paul, ably taught by SueAnne Bergmann and Cathy McKinnis. Each day the children, taught by Carol Goodrich, learned about mission work in foreign countries, about their customs, clothing, games, and food, and imagined how it would be to trade places with a child in those countries: China, Mexico, Poland, Kenya, and Brazil. The Mission Project of the week resulted in the collection of thirty-three backpacks that will be sent by way of Campus Crusade, to one of the following countries: Russia, Mongolia, North Africa, or the Middle East. Each backpack was filled with school supplies, a teddy bear, a story about Jesus, and a Bible Story book. The backpacks will be sent by October. The kitchen was hub of activity, and a happy place for children and staff, as Barbara Wiggs and Maxine Jones made snacks and drinks for everyone. Barbara Knox and Tammy Sandel made sure the staff was fed well. We started and ended each day with music and prayers. Pastor Robertson, Janet Hem and Nancy Dunn headed up the crew, and were assisted by Graham Bethel and Zach Cardwell on the drums, and featured “The Singing Sisters” Olivia Lockwood, Crystal Johnson and Francesca Shipsey; Mayfawny Bergmann helped us with action songs, sang some solos. Tammy Sandel shared her talents through a special skit each day, supported by teenagers and unsuspecting staff members. Dan Trinkle and Tammy Sandel were in the enviable position of heading up recreation, the class everyone wanted to go to. Graham Bethel and Zach Cardwell were wonderful helpers. Joanne Kovacs, helped by Dorothy Bethel, Alice Landolt, and Shirley Bosler and the class “hand holders,” designed original, one of a kind craft projects that related to the lesion of the day. Many thanks to the unsung hero of the week, Pam Kirby, who used her vacation time to take care of three children in the nursery each day. Registration went smoothly thanks to the help of Ron Smith, Marilyn Sameh, Jan Mather, John Miller, and Bonnie Robertson. Kathy Trinkle designed the Memory Work Booklets, helped by Jennifer Robinson and Stephanie Cardwell. Dennis Dunn made sure passerbys knew about Vacation Bible School by making an effective, windproof sign for in front of the church. Special Salvation bracelets, key chains or backpack pulls were scouted out and made by Bonnie Robertson. This year each class was especially care for by our” hand holders,” Carolyn Kessler, Deb Johnson, Carol Graefnitz, Barbara Knox, Jackie Stewart, Lana Johnston, Olivia Lockwood, Crystal Johnson, Francesca Shipsey, and Sasha Dubikovsky. Marcella Verplank and Bonnie Robertson treated the staff to a delicious and relaxing lunch at the end of VBS on Friday. Our photographer this year, Bob Verplank, took pictures of all the children, some of the activities and teachers, and combined them all on a DVD. Glenn Sparks helped set up the equipment for viewing, so that parents could watch the DVD at the end of our closing program. We were happily surprised that the parents and the children stayed for quite a while viewing the DVD. We cannot close this account without a special work of thanks to Carolyn Kessler, whose vision for Vacation Bible School got us going one more year. If you have not guessed by now, even though we are always tired by the end of the week, the staff and helpers have just as much fun as the children. We invite you to join the fun next year!
