Sunday, August 6 Bulletin

The Order for the Worship of God

Faith Presbyterian Church 9:30 a.m., August 6, 2006
We invite all into a common discipline of silence as we gather for worship. Then we will greet and welcome one another into the presence of the Lord.

Prelude “Meditation” --Vernon Murgatroyd (Canada, b. 1941)

Greeting & Invocation

Hymn # 501 “Oh, for a Thousand Tongues to Sing” Vs. 1 –3, 7

Psalter: Psalm 37: 3, 5; 23 – 25; 29, 31, 34; 39 - 40 Bob Verplank
(read responsively)
3Trust in the Lord, and do good; so you will live in the land, and enjoy security.
5Commit your way to the Lord; trust in him, and he will act.
23Our steps are made firm by the Lord, when he delights in our way;
24though we stumble, we shall not fall headlong, for the Lord holds us by the hand.
25I have been young, and now am old, yet I have not seen the righteous forsaken or their children begging bread.
29The righteous shall inherit the land, and live in it forever.
31The law of their God is in their hearts; their steps do not slip.
34Wait for the Lord, and keep to his way, and he will exalt you to inherit the land; you will look on the destruction of the wicked.
39The salvation of the righteous is from the Lord; he is their refuge in the time of trouble.
40The Lord helps them and rescues them; he rescues them from the wicked, and saves them, because they take refuge in him.

Special Music “Sounding Joy” --Justin Morgan, 1796 - ?

Prayer for Illumination Bob Verplank

Old Testament Lesson: Deuteronomy 1: 6 - 8
Bob Verplank
6The Lord our God spoke to us at Horeb, saying, “You have stayed long enough at this mountain. 7Resume your journey, and go into the hill country of the Amorites as well as into the neighboring regions—the Arabah, the hill country, the Shephelah, the Negeb, and the seacoast—the land of the Canaanites and the Lebanon, as far as the great river, the river Euphrates. 8See, I have set the land before you; go in and take possession of the land that I swore to your ancestors, to Abraham, to Isaac, and to Jacob, to give to them and to their descendants after them.”

Lector: “This is the Word of God.”

Congregation: “Thanks be to God for His Word.”

Children’s Sermon

Hymn # 553 “Jesus Calls Us; O’er the Tumult”

New Testament Lesson: Matthew 14: 22 - 32
22Immediately he made the disciples get into the boat and go on ahead to the other side, while he dismissed the crowds. 23And after he had dismissed the crowds, he went up the mountain by himself to pray. When evening came, he was there alone, 24but by this time the boat, battered by the waves, was far from the land, for the wind was against them. 25And early in the morning he came walking toward them on the sea. 26But when the disciples saw him walking on the sea, they were terrified, saying, “It is a ghost!” And they cried out in fear. 27But immediately Jesus spoke to them and said, “Take heart, it is I; do not be afraid.” 28Peter answered him, “Lord, if it is you, command me to come to you on the water.” 29He said, “Come.” So Peter got out of the boat, started walking on the water, and came toward Jesus. 30But when he noticed the strong wind, he became frightened, and beginning to sink, he cried out, “Lord, save me!” 31Jesus immediately reached out his hand and caught him, saying to him, “You of little faith, why did you doubt?” 32When they got into the boat, the wind ceased.

Give thanks with a grateful heart,
Give thanks to the Holy One,
Give thanks because He’s given Jesus Christ, His Son.
(Repeat)
And now let the weak say, “I am strong!”
Let the poor say, “I am rich, because of what the Lord has done
for us!”
Give thanks with a grateful heart,

Next Sunday’s Sermon will be on: “The Deity of Jesus”
Pastor Robertson

Worship
…is the quickening of conscience by God’s holiness;
the nourishment of mind with His truth;
the purifying of imagination by His beauty;
the opening of the heart to His love;
the surrender of the will to His purpose;
and all of this gathered up in adoration—
the most selfless emotion of which our nature is capable, and therefore the chief remedy for that self-centeredness which is our original sin and the source of all actual sin.” William Temple

Welcome
