Sunday, September 17 Bulletin
The Order for the Worship of God
Faith Presbyterian Church 9:30 a.m., September 17, 2006
We invite all into a common discipline of silence as we gather for worship. Then we will greet and welcome one another into the presence of the Lord.
Prelude 3 Verses from the Te Deum --Anonymous (France, publ. circa. 1531)
“Blessed Assurance” --Dale Wood
Greeting & Invocation
Hymn # 22 “Love Divine, All Loves Excelling”
Psalter: Psalm 65: 1 – 8 (read responsively) Jurgen Honig
1Praise is due to you, O God, in Zion; and to you shall vows be performed,
2O you who answer prayer! To you all flesh shall come.
3When deeds of iniquity overwhelm us, you forgive our transgressions.
4Happy are those whom you choose and bring near to live in your courts. We shall be satisfied with the goodness of your house, your holy temple.
5By awesome deeds you answer us with deliverance, O God of our salvation; you are the hope of all the ends of the earth and of the farthest seas.
6By your strength you established the mountains; you are girded with might.
7You silence the roaring of the seas, the roaring of their waves, the tumult of the peoples.
8Those who live at earth’s farthest bounds are awed by your signs; you make the gateways of the morning and the evening shout for joy.
Anthem “Be Still My Soul” --Jean Sibelius
Prayer for Illumination Jurgen Honig
Old Testament Lesson: Jonah 1: 1 - 6
Jurgen Honig
1Now the word of the Lord came to Jonah son of Amittai, saying, 2“Go at once to Nineveh, that great city, and cry out against it; for their wickedness has come up before me.” 3But Jonah set out to flee to Tarshish from the presence of the Lord. He went down to Joppa and found a ship going to Tarshish; so he paid his fare and went on board, to go with them to Tarshish, away from the presence of the Lord.
4But the Lord hurled a great wind upon the sea, and such a mighty storm came upon the sea that the ship threatened to break up. 5Then the mariners were afraid, and each cried to his god. They threw the cargo that was in the ship into the sea, to lighten it for them. Jonah, meanwhile, had gone down into the hold of the ship and had lain down, and was fast asleep. 6The captain came and said to him, “What are you doing sound asleep? Get up, call on your god! Perhaps the god will spare us a thought so that we do not perish.”
Lector: “This is the Word of God.”
Congregation: “Thanks be to God for His Word.”
Children’s Sermon
Hymn # 7 “I Sought the Lord”
New Testament Lesson: John 6: 16 – 21
16When evening came, his disciples went down to the sea, 17got into a boat, and started across the sea to Capernaum. It was now dark, and Jesus had not yet come to them. 18The sea became rough because a strong wind was blowing. 19When they had rowed about three or four miles, they saw Jesus walking on the sea and coming near the boat, and they were terrified. 20But he said to them, “It is I; do not be afraid.” 21Then they wanted to take him into the boat, and immediately the boat reached the land toward which they were going.

Postlude Toccata for Daniel --Dr. Carl B. Staplin (Drake Univ., Iowa)
"Toccata for Daniel" was commissioned by his parents
as a memorial for Daniel Horak (1981-2000) who died
in a car accident.
The first and last sections of the toccata are based
on themes from Pachelbel's famous Canon in D, and the
middle section is an arrangement of the Czech hymn
"Narodil se Kristus Pan," which reflects the Czech
heritage of the First Presbyterian Church in Ely,
Iowa, and the Horak family.
"Narodil se Kristus Pan"
Jesus Christ was born for us, Alleluia!
Born to save us from our sins, Alleluia!
Born to be our Savior, Guide and friend and brother;
Born, born, born for us today.
Prophets wise in days of old, Alleluia!
Of His mission had foretold. Alleluia!
By a virgin tended, From on high descended.
Born, born, born for us today.

Worship
…is the quickening of conscience by God’s holiness;
the nourishment of mind with His truth;
the purifying of imagination by His beauty;
the opening of the heart to His love;
the surrender of the will to His purpose;
and all of this gathered up in adoration—
the most selfless emotion of which our nature is capable, and therefore the chief remedy for that self-centeredness which is our original sin and the source of all actual sin.” William Temple
Welcome
To all who are weary and seek rest; to all who mourn and long for comfort; to all who struggle and desire victory; to all who sin and need a Savior; to all who are idle and look for service; to all who are strangers and want fellowship; to all who hunger and thirst after righteousness; and to whosoever will come--this church opens wide her doors and offers her welcome in the name of Jesus Christ her Lord.
Guests please sign our guest book and join us in the Fellowship Hall after worship.
Babysitting is available during worship for infants up to 2-1/2 years old in the room behind the balcony. Children ages 2-1/2 through 5 will be in the Pre-School Nursery in the Education Wing. School age children worship with their parents.

writing tablets, pens, playing cards, foot and body powder, insect
bite lotion, hard candy, chewing gum, correspondence, etc.." Please

The remainder of the upper lot will serve as convenient parking spaces for visitors. Please know if you have a need to park within easy walking distance, you are welcome to use this upper lot. Everyone else is kindly asked to use the lower parking lot. Our intent is to make access to the church easy for those who really need it and for our visitors. * Statement from the Session Minutes - "It was moved and seconded to establish a Committee, appointed by the Session, with the following charge: "In light of the recent PUP report, and given our goal of preserving the unity of the Faith Presbyterian Church family, a Committee is to be set up to explore possible options and consequences associated with Faith Presbyterian Church leaving the PCUSA; similarly, the Committee is to explore the options and consequences associated with continuing its affiliation with the PCUSA while working towards reform of the leadership of the
PCUSA. The Committee will report its findings to the Congregation in January 2007". This motion was approved unanimously."
The Committee consists presently of David McKinnis, Chair, Glenn Sparks, Elaine McVay, Jane Stewart, and Pat Kain. We hope two more of us who have been approached to serve, and are considering serving, will accept a place on this committee so that it will consist of seven people.
