Sunday, January 7 Bulletin

The Order for the Worship of God

Faith Presbyterian Church 9:30 a.m., January 7, 2007
We invite all into a common discipline of silence as we gather for worship. Then we will greet and welcome one another into the presence of the Lord.

Prelude “He Is Born, the Divine Christ Child” --Dale Wood

“Praise My Soul, the King of Heaven” --Raymond Haan

Greeting & Invocation

Hymn # 253 “Praise to the Lord, the Almighty”

Prayer of Confession and Assurance of Pardon

Unison: You have claimed us by baptism with water and the Holy Spirit, yet we often wander from the inspiration you provide. Sometimes we live as if our only standards were our personal self-interests. At times we seek power by our own manipulations, rather that accept the strength you alone can provide. Refashion us in your image and empower us once more to follow Jesus as true disciples.

Pastor: In Jesus name, disciples are forgiven and receive new breath and spirit. God accepts all who come in awe and reverence, believing.

Unison: We are forgiven; we are loved; we are empowered. Praise God for new life, for renewed opportunities!

The Gloria Patri Gray Psalter Hymnal page 635

Special Music “Guide Me, O Thou Great Jehovah” arr. John Innes

Prayer for Illumination Donna Lofgren

Old Testament Lesson: Isaiah 61: 1 – 4
Donna Lofgren
1The spirit of the Lord God is upon me, because the Lord has anointed me; he has sent me to bring good news to the oppressed, to bind up the brokenhearted, to proclaim liberty to the captives, and release to the prisoners; 2to proclaim the year of the Lord’s favor, and the day of vengeance of our God; to comfort all who mourn; 3to provide for those who mourn in Zion— to give them a garland instead of ashes, the oil of gladness instead of mourning, the mantle of praise instead of a faint spirit. They will be called oaks of righteousness, the planting of the Lord, to display his glory.
4They shall build up the ancient ruins, they shall raise up the former devastations; they shall repair the ruined cities, the devastations of many generations.

Lector: “This is the Word of God.”

Congregation: “Thanks be to God for His Word.”

Children’s Sermon

Hymn # 500 “How Firm a Foundation”

New Testament Lesson: Luke 3: 15 – 17, 21 – 22
15As the people were filled with expectation, and all were questioning in their hearts concerning John, whether he might be the Messiah, 16John answered all of them by saying, “I baptize you with water; but one who is more powerful than I is coming; I am not worthy to untie the thong of his sandals. He will baptize you with the Holy Spirit and fire. 17His winnowing fork is in his hand, to clear his threshing floor and to gather the wheat into his granary; but the chaff he will burn with unquenchable fire.”
21Now when all the people were baptized, and when Jesus also had been baptized and was praying, the heaven was opened, 22and the Holy Spirit descended upon him in bodily form like a dove. And a voice came from heaven, “You are my Son, the Beloved; with you I am well pleased.”

Sermon “Fire and Feathers” Rev. Ralph Smith

Gathering of Tithes and Offerings

Offertory “Song of Simeon” (see Luke 2: 25-35)
--J.S. Bach (Germany, 1685-1750)

In peace and joy I now depart For God has called
I trust in Him with soul and heart, Calm, prepared.
God doth e'er His promise keep,
And death's a few years' sleeping

To heathen folk He hath brought light from out of darkness.
He leadeth them of blinded sight Into gladness.
He's of His own Israel, Her Praise, her joy, her glory.

Response
As thy offered gifts most rare
At the cradle plain and bare,
So may we with holy joy,
Pure and free from sin’s alloy,
All our costliest treasures bring,
Christ, to you, our heavenly king.

Hymn # 311 “I Come with Joy to Meet My Lord” (vs. 1 & 2)

The Lord’s Supper
Invitation and Words of Institution
Prayer of Thanksgiving
Giving and receiving of the Bread and Cup
The inside cups are white grape juice; the outer cups contain wine.

Prayer of Consecration
Gracious God, you have made us one with all your people in heaven and on earth. You have fed us with the bread of life and renewed us for your service. We give ourselves to you, and ask that our daily living may be a part of the life of your Kingdom. May our love be your love, reaching out into the world; through Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen

Hymn # 311 “I Come with Joy to Meet My Lord” (vs. 3, 4 & 5)

Worship
…is the quickening of conscience by God’s holiness;
the nourishment of mind with His truth;
the purifying of imagination by His beauty;
the opening of the heart to His love;
the surrender of the will to His purpose;
and all of this gathered up in adoration—
the most selfless emotion of which our nature is capable, and therefore the chief remedy for that self-centeredness which is our original sin and the source of all actual sin.” -William Temple

All Ye, All Ye Out for Free
Please pick up any kitchen items (bowls, pans, candlesticks, etc.) that you brought to us when you shared food in the past few weeks. They are in the kitchen, on the counter under the left hand window.
