Sunday, January 28 Bulletin
The Order for the Worship of God
Faith Presbyterian Church 9:30 a.m., January 28, 2007
We invite all into a common discipline of silence as we gather for worship. Then we will greet and welcome one another into the presence of the Lord.
Prelude “Rock of Ages, Cleft For Me” --Rob Roy Peery
Greeting & Invocation
Hymn # 408 “Rejoice, the Lord Is King”
Psalter: Psalm 39 (read responsively) Tammy Sandel
1I said, “I will guard my ways that I may not sin with my tongue; I will keep a muzzle on my mouth as long as the wicked are in my presence.”
2I was silent and still; I held my peace to no avail; my distress grew worse,
3my heart became hot within me. While I mused, the fire burned; then I spoke with my tongue:
4“Lord, let me know my end, and what is the measure of my days; let me know how fleeting my life is.
5You have made my days a few handbreadths, and my lifetime is as nothing in your sight. Surely everyone stands as a mere breath.
6Surely everyone goes about like a shadow. Surely for nothing they are in turmoil; they heap up, and do not know who will gather.
7“And now, O Lord, what do I wait for? My hope is in you.
8Deliver me from all my transgressions. Do not make me the scorn of the fool.
9I am silent; I do not open my mouth, for it is you who have done it.
10Remove your stroke from me; I am worn down by the blows of your hand.
11“You chastise mortals in punishment for sin, consuming like a moth what is dear to them; surely everyone is a mere breath.
12“Hear my prayer, O Lord, and give ear to my cry; do not hold your peace at my tears. For I am your passing guest, an alien, like all my forebears.
13Turn your gaze away from me, that I may smile again, before I depart and am no more.”
Anthem “And The Word Was God” --Gary Hallquist & Benjamin Harlan
Prayer for Illumination Tammy Sandel
Old Testament Lesson: I Samuel 7: 3 - 12
Tammy Sandel
3Then Samuel said to all the house of Israel, “If you are returning to the Lord with all your heart, then put away the foreign gods and the Astartes from among you. Direct your heart to the Lord, and serve him only, and he will deliver you out of the hand of the Philistines.” 4So Israel put away the Baals and the Astartes, and they served the Lord only. 5Then Samuel said, “Gather all Israel at Mizpah, and I will pray to the Lord for you.” 6So they gathered at Mizpah, and drew water and poured it out before the Lord. They fasted that day, and said, “We have sinned against the Lord.” And Samuel judged the people of Israel at Mizpah.
7When the Philistines heard that the people of Israel had gathered at Mizpah, the lords of the Philistines went up against Israel. And when the people of Israel heard of it they were afraid of the Philistines. 8The people of Israel said to Samuel, “Do not cease to cry out to the Lord our God for us, and pray that he may save us from the hand of the Philistines.” 9So Samuel took a sucking lamb and offered it as a whole burnt offering to the Lord; Samuel cried out to the Lord for Israel, and the Lord answered him. 10As Samuel was offering up the burnt offering, the Philistines drew near to attack Israel; but the Lord thundered with a mighty voice that day against the Philistines and threw them into confusion; and they were routed before Israel. 11And the men of Israel went out of Mizpah and pursued the Philistines, and struck them down as far as beyond Beth-car. 12Then Samuel took a stone and set it up between Mizpah and Jeshanah, and named it Ebenezer; for he said, “Thus far the Lord has helped us.”
Lector: “This is the Word of God.”
Congregation: “Thanks be to God for His Word.”
Children’s Sermon
Hymn # 64 “In the Bulb There Is a Flower”
New Testament Lesson: John 11: 32 - 44
32When Mary came where Jesus was and saw him, she knelt at his feet and said to him, “Lord, if you had been here, my brother would not have died.”
33When Jesus saw her weeping, and the Jews who came with her also weeping, he was greatly disturbed in spirit and deeply moved. 34He said, “Where have you laid him?” They said to him, “Lord, come and see.” 35Jesus began to weep. 36So the Jews said, “See how he loved him!” 37But some of them said, “Could not he who opened the eyes of the blind man have kept this man from dying?” 38Then Jesus, again greatly disturbed, came to the tomb. It was a cave, and a stone was lying against it. 39Jesus said, “Take away the stone.” Martha, the sister of the dead man, said to him, “Lord, already there is a stench because he has been dead four days.” 40Jesus said to her, “Did I not tell you that if you believed, you would see the glory of God?” 41So they took away the stone. And Jesus looked upward and said, “Father, I thank you for having heard me. 42I knew that you always hear me, but I have said this for the sake of the crowd standing here, so that they may believe that you sent me.” 43When he had said this, he cried with a loud voice, “Lazarus, come out!” 44The dead man came out, his hands and feet bound with strips of cloth, and his face wrapped in a cloth. Jesus said to them, “Unbind him, and let him go.”

Worship
…is the quickening of conscience by God’s holiness;
the nourishment of mind with His truth;
the purifying of imagination by His beauty;
the opening of the heart to His love;
the surrender of the will to His purpose;
and all of this gathered up in adoration—
the most selfless emotion of which our nature is capable, and therefore the chief remedy for that self-centeredness which is our original sin and the source of all actual sin.” William Temple

PUP Report
The Faith PUP Committee has printed a report of their findings. Please pick up your copy on the table by the office. Everyone should have a copy and they are in alphabetical order. If you can not find one with your name on it, please let Stephanie know—there are more copies in the office.
Registers
You have probably noticed the attendance register pads located in the pews the last several Sundays. These registers are not intended to keep track of anyone or actually take attendance. Their only purpose is to collect information about visitors and/or regular attendees who desire a call. The register also provides a convenient way to update address, phone, or email information. The register should be passed down the aisle during the offertory and signed by each individual or family group so that those who are visiting or desiring a call will not feel singled out. Please pass them along and sign them as a regular part of our church activities. The information collected on these registers may be crucial in months to come as we transition to an interim and then new pastor since Pastor Robertson will not be around to identify visitors.
