Sunday, February 25 Bulletin

The Order for the Worship of God

Faith Presbyterian Church 9:30 a.m., February 25, 2007
We invite all into a common discipline of silence as we gather for worship. Then we will greet and welcome one another into the presence of the Lord.

Prelude Two Couplets of the Kyrie,
"Lord, Have Mercy upon Us"
"Christ, Have Mercy upon Us" by Francois Couperin
Mark Johnson, organist

Greeting & Invocation

Hymn # 556 “Great Is Thy Faithfulness”

Psalter: Psalm 32 (read responsively) Lois Wark
1Happy are those whose transgression is forgiven, whose sin is covered.
2Happy are those to whom the Lord imputes no iniquity, and in whose spirit there is no deceit.
3While I kept silence, my body wasted away through my groaning all day long.
4For day and night your hand was heavy upon me; my strength was dried up as by the heat of summer.
5Then I acknowledged my sin to you, and I did not hide my iniquity; I said, “I will confess my transgressions to the Lord,” and you forgave the guilt of my sin.
6Therefore let all who are faithful offer prayer to you; at a time of distress, the rush of mighty waters shall not reach them.
7You are a hiding place for me; you preserve me from trouble; you surround me with glad cries of deliverance.
8I will instruct you and teach you the way you should go; I will counsel you with my eye upon you.
9Do not be like a horse or a mule, without understanding, whose temper must be curbed with bit and bridle, else it will not stay near you.
10Many are the torments of the wicked, but steadfast love surrounds those who trust in the Lord.
11Be glad in the Lord and rejoice, O righteous, and shout for joy, all you upright in heart.

Anthem “Holy And Mighty” --Pepper Choplin

Prayer for Illumination Lois Wark

Old Testament Lesson: Genesis 18: 1 – 8
Lois Wark
1The Lord appeared to Abraham by the oaks of Mamre, as he sat at the entrance of his tent in the heat of the day. 2He looked up and saw three men standing near him. When he saw them, he ran from the tent entrance to meet them, and bowed down to the ground. 3He said, “My lord, if I find favor with you, do not pass by your servant. 4Let a little water be brought, and wash your feet, and rest yourselves under the tree. 5Let me bring a little bread, that you may refresh yourselves, and after that you may pass on—since you have come to your servant.” So they said, “Do as you have said.” 6And Abraham hastened into the tent to Sarah, and said, “Make ready quickly three measures of choice flour, knead it, and make cakes.” 7Abraham ran to the herd, and took a calf, tender and good, and gave it to the servant, who hastened to prepare it. 8Then he took curds and milk and the calf that he had prepared, and set it before them; and he stood by them under the tree while they ate.

Lector: “This is the Word of God.”

Congregation: “Thanks be to God for His Word.”

Children’s Sermon

Hymn # 60 “There Is a Redeemer”

New Testament Lesson: John 13: 1 – 17
1Now before the festival of the Passover, Jesus knew that his hour had come to depart from this world and go to the Father. Having loved his own who were in the world, he loved them to the end. 2The devil had already put it into the heart of Judas son of Simon Iscariot to betray him. And during supper 3Jesus, knowing that the Father had given all things into his hands, and that he had come from God and was going to God, 4got up from the table, took off his outer robe, and tied a towel around himself. 5Then he poured water into a basin and began to wash the disciples’ feet and to wipe them with the towel that was tied around him. 6He came to Simon Peter, who said to him, “Lord, are you going to wash my feet?” 7Jesus answered, “You do not know now what I am doing, but later you will understand.” 8Peter said to him, “You will never wash my feet.” Jesus answered, “Unless I wash you, you have no share with me.” 9Simon Peter said to him, “Lord, not my feet only but also my hands and my head!” 10Jesus said to him, “One who has bathed does not need to wash, except for the feet, but is entirely clean. And you are clean, though not all of you.” 11For he knew who was to betray him; for this reason he said, “Not all of you are clean.” 12After he had washed their feet, had put on his robe, and had returned to the table, he said to them, “Do you know what I have done to you? 13You call me Teacher and Lord—and you are right, for that is what I am. 14So if I, your Lord and Teacher, have washed your feet, you also ought to wash one another’s feet. 15For I have set you an example, that you also should do as I have done to you. 16Very truly, I tell you, servants are not greater than their master, nor are messengers greater than the one who sent them. 17If you know these things, you are blessed if you do them.

“Who Should Take Holy Communion? ” Pastor Robertson

Worship
…is the quickening of conscience by God’s holiness;
the nourishment of mind with His truth;
the purifying of imagination by His beauty;
the opening of the heart to His love;
the surrender of the will to His purpose;
and all of this gathered up in adoration—
the most selfless emotion of which our nature is capable, and therefore the chief remedy for that self-centeredness which is our original sin and the source of all actual sin.” William Temple

Welcome

MOAPI…
Doesn’t that just roll off the tongue? And you’re saying to yourself, what is MOAPI anyway, and, why should I care?

MOAPI anyway is: Mother Of All Pitch Ins.

See, here’s the deal: On Sunday, March 4, after worship, at noon, we’re going to celebrate MOAPI at Faith Pres. by bringing our very favorite, most delicious, spectacular and famous dish*, be it pie, roast beef, tuna casserole, pickled pigs feet, noodles, brownies and ….well, you get the drift. (Good pun, by the way.)

Also, if you will, kindly bring the recipe and deposit it in the container so provided. Then we’ll ask Stephanie to compose the recipes into some kind of order so that everyone can have a copy eventually. So, you can see why this is not just any old pitch in. Cooks, your reputation is on the line! Well, maybe not that serious, but do your best. (Tables service and drinks provided.)

After all, what can be more enjoyable on a snowy, cold day than a warm, delicious meal, served at one’s leisure, amongst a host of friends and family, sharing recipes and good cheers—just a wee bite of winsomely prepared edibles! What joy! What fellowship!

Speaking of which there will be, for your pleasure and attention, delightful, sparkling conversation and chatting, both serious and entertaining. After which we will all gather the remains of our gracious repast and go home, all with the knowledge that we have shared a most enjoyable winter coming-together amid the snow and bleak mid-winter.

SEE YOU THEN!
*no haggis or liver mush, please.
