The Order for the Worship of God

Faith Presbyterian Church 9:30 a.m., April 15, 2007
We invite all into a common discipline of silence as we gather for worship. Then we will greet and welcome one another into the presence of the Lord.

Prelude Prelude V
--Hermann Schroeder (Germany, 1904-1084)

Theme from the 'New World Symphony'
--Antonin Dvorak, 1841 - 1904

Greeting & Invocation

Hymn # 249 “Holy, Holy, Holy” (Gray Psalter Hymnal)

Psalter: Psalm 1 (read responsively) Pat Kain
1Happy are those who do not follow the advice of the wicked, or take the path that sinners tread, or sit in the seat of scoffers;

2but their delight is in the law of the Lord, and on his law they meditate day and night.

3They are like trees planted by streams of water, which yield their fruit in its season, and their leaves do not wither. In all that they do, they prosper.

4The wicked are not so, but are like chaff that the wind drives away.

5Therefore the wicked will not stand in the judgment, nor sinners in the congregation of the righteous;

6for the Lord watches over the way of the righteous, but the way of the wicked will perish.
Anthem “Hallelujah! What a Savior!” --Anna Laura Page

Prayer for Illumination Pat Kain

Old Testament Lesson: Daniel 12: 1 – 3 (Bible pg. 819)
Pat Kain
1“At that time Michael, the great prince, the protector of your people, shall arise. There shall be a time of anguish, such as has never occurred since nations first came into existence. But at that time your people shall be delivered, everyone who is found written in the book. 2Many of those who sleep in the dust of the earth shall awake, some to everlasting life, and some to shame and everlasting contempt. 3Those who are wise shall shine like the brightness of the sky, and those who lead many to righteousness, like the stars forever and ever.

Lector: “This is the Word of God.”

Congregation: “Thanks be to God for His Word.”

Children’s Sermon

Hymn Prelude “In the Bulb there is a Flower”
Mayfawny Bergmann - piano

Hymn # 64 “In the Bulb there is a Flower”
(Green Supplemental Hymnal)

New Testament Lesson: John 20: 19 – 25 (Bible pg. 989)
19When it was evening on that day, the first day of the week, and the doors of the house where the disciples had met were locked for fear of the Jews, Jesus came and stood among them and said, “Peace be with you.” 20After he said this, he showed them his hands and his side. Then the disciples rejoiced when they saw the Lord. 21Jesus said to them again, “Peace be with you. As the Father has sent me, so I send you.” 22When he had said this, he breathed on them and said to them, “Receive the Holy Spirit. 23If you forgive the sins of any, they are forgiven them; if you retain the sins of any, they are retained.” 24But Thomas (who was called the Twin), one of the twelve, was not with them when Jesus came. 25So the other disciples told him, “We have seen the Lord.” But he said to them, “Unless I see the mark of the nails in his hands, and put my finger in the mark of the nails and my hand in his side, I will not believe.”

Apostles’ Creed
I believe in God, the Father Almighty, Maker of heaven and
earth, And in Jesus Christ his only Son our Lord; who was
conceived by the Holy Ghost, born of the Virgin Mary,
suffered under Pontius Pilate, was crucified, dead, and
buried; he descended into hell; the third day he rose again
from the dead; he ascended into heaven, and sitteth on the
right hand of God, the Father Almighty; from thence he
shall come to judge the quick and the dead. I believe in the
Holy Ghost; the holy catholic Church; the communion of
saints; the forgiveness of sins; the resurrection of the body;
and the life everlasting. Amen.

Next Week’s Sermon will be on: “The Hope of the Gospel”
Pastor Robertson

Worship
…is the quickening of conscience by God’s holiness;
the nourishment of mind with His truth;
the purifying of imagination by His beauty;
the opening of the heart to His love;
the surrender of the will to His purpose;
and all of this gathered up in adoration—
the most selfless emotion of which our nature is capable, and therefore the chief remedy for that self-centeredness which is our original sin and the source of all actual sin.” William Temple
