The Order for the Worship of God

Faith Presbyterian Church 9:30 a.m., May 20, 2007
We invite all into a common discipline of silence as we gather for worship. Then we will greet and welcome one another into the presence of the Lord.

" I trust in my beloved God in anxiety and distress. He can always deliver me out of misery, fear and troubles. He can turn my misfortune; all rests in his hands."

Greeting & Invocation

Hymn # 40 Praise Him! Praise Him!
(Green Supplemental Hymnal)

Psalter: Psalm 23 (in unison) Lois Wark
1The Lord is my shepherd, I shall not want.
2He makes me lie down in green pastures; he leads me beside still waters;
3he restores my soul. He leads me in right paths for his name’s sake.
4Even though I walk through the darkest valley, I fear no evil; for you are with me; your rod and your staff— they comfort me.
5You prepare a table before me in the presence of my enemies; you anoint my head with oil; my cup overflows.
6Surely goodness and mercy shall follow me all the days of my life, and I shall dwell in the house of the Lord my whole life long.

Special Music “Come, Ye Blessed” --John Perindle Scott
Jim Milligan

Prayer for Illumination Lois Wark

Old Testament Lesson: Job 19: 23 – 27 (Bible pg. 458)
Lois Wark
23“O that my words were written down! O that they were inscribed in a book! 24O that with an iron pen and with lead they were engraved on a rock forever! 25For I know that my Redeemer lives, and that at the last he will stand upon the earth; 26and after my skin has been thus destroyed, then in my flesh I shall see God, 27whom I shall see on my side, and my eyes shall behold, and not another. My heart faints within me!

Lector: “This is the Word of God.”

Congregation: “Thanks be to God for His Word.”

Hymn # 384 “When I Survey the Wondrous Cross”
(Gray Psalter Hymnal)

New Testament Lesson: Matthew 19: 16 – 30 (Bible pg. 897)
16Then someone came to him and said, “Teacher, what good deed must I do to have eternal life?” 17And he said to him, “Why do you ask me about what is good? There is only one who is good. If you wish to enter into life, keep the commandments.” 18He said to him, “Which ones?” And Jesus said, “You shall not murder; You shall not commit adultery; You shall not steal; You shall not bear false witness; 19Honor your father and mother; also, You shall love your neighbor as yourself.” 20The young man said to him, “I have kept all these; what do I still lack?” 21Jesus said to him, “If you wish to be perfect, go, sell your possessions, and give the money to the poor, and you will have treasure in heaven; then come, follow me.” 22When the young man heard this word, he went away grieving, for he had many possessions.
23Then Jesus said to his disciples, “Truly I tell you, it will be hard for a rich person to enter the kingdom of heaven. 24Again I tell you, it is easier for a camel to go through the eye of a needle than for someone who is rich to enter the kingdom of God.” 25When the disciples heard this, they were greatly astounded and said, “Then who can be saved?” 26But Jesus looked at them and said, “For mortals it is impossible, but for God all things are possible.” 27Then Peter said in reply, “Look, we have left everything and followed you. What then will we have?” 28Jesus said to them, “Truly I tell you, at the renewal of all things, when the Son of Man is seated on the throne of his glory, you who have followed me will also sit on twelve thrones, judging the twelve tribes of Israel. 29And everyone who has left houses or brothers or sisters or father or mother or children or fields, for my name’s sake, will receive a hundredfold, and will inherit eternal life. 30But many who are first will be last, and the last will be first.

Sermon “A Life of Contentment” Nancy Dunn

Gathering of Tithes and Offerings

Offertory “Savior, Again to Thy Dear Name” Roy Brunner

Savior, again to thy dear name we raise
With one accord our parting hymn of praise;
We stand to bless thee ere our worship cease,
Then, lowly kneeling, wait thy word of peace.

Grant us thy peace throughout our earthly life,
Our balm in sorrow, and our stay in strife;
Then, when thy voice shall bid our conflict cease.
Call us, O Lord, to thine eternal peace.

Please sign and pass the register located in the pew.

Response
Praise God, from whom all blessings flow;
Praise him, all creatures here below.
Alleluia, Alleluia.
Praise Him above, you heavenly host;
Praise Father, Son and Holy Ghost.
Alleluia, Alleluia,
Alleluia, Alleluia, Alleluia! ∆

Rev. Ron Green will be preaching next week’s sermon.

Worship
…is the quickening of conscience by God’s holiness;
the nourishment of mind with His truth;
the purifying of imagination by His beauty;
the opening of the heart to His love;
the surrender of the will to His purpose;
and all of this gathered up in adoration—
the most selfless emotion of which our nature is capable, and therefore the chief remedy for that self-centeredness which is our original sin and the source of all actual sin.” William Temple

Welcome
To all who are weary and seek rest; to all who mourn and long for comfort; to all who struggle and desire victory; to all who sin and need a Savior; to all who are idle and look for service; to all who are strangers and want fellowship; to all who hunger and thirst after righteousness; and to whosoever will come--this church opens wide her doors and offers her welcome in the name of Jesus Christ her Lord.
Guests please sign our guest book and join us in the Fellowship Hall after worship.
Babysitting is available during worship for infants up to 2-1/2 years old in the room behind the balcony. Children ages 2-1/2 through 5 will be in the Pre-School Nursery in the Education Wing. School age children worship with their parents.

After 30 years of missionary activity in Columbia, South America, during which they founded a national student movement affiliated with InterVarsity Christian Fellowship, and then taught for 10 years in the Biblical Seminary of Colombia, Jack and Mary Anne were invited by InterVarsity to return to the U.S. to help with the planning of the Urbana Student Mission Conventions held in the years 2000 and 2003.

Music Notes

Chorale and Partita on 'Auf meinen lieben Gott'

This partita was composed in the form of a Baroque dance suite. By Bach's time, the dance suites contained the allemande, courante, sarabande and gigue, but other dances, or a "double", could be added.

The allemande (German) is of a moderate tempo in 4/4 meter.
A double is characterized by a running pattern.
The sarabande (Spanish) is slow and dignified, in triple meter.
A courante (French) is a little lively and in triple meter.
The gigue (English or Irish) is fast, in 6/8 or 6/4 time.
