The Order for the Worship of God
Faith Presbyterian Church 9:30 a.m., May 27 2007
We invite all into a common discipline of meditation as we gather for worship. Then we will greet and welcome one another into the presence of the Lord.
Prelude “Spirit of God, descend Upon My Heart” Ron Boud
“Holy Spirit, Truth Divine” Healey Willan (Canada, 1880-1986)
(See Gray Hymnal, p. 423)
Greeting & Invocation Steve Varys
Hymn: "Breathe on Me, Breath of God" See insert
Prayer of Confession Steve Varys
Dear heavenly Father, we confess we haven’t lived as though we were completely motivated by your Spirit. In fact, we admit there is a side of us which resists setting the bar higher. Forgive us for living at times one way and at times another way according to how we feel at any given moment. Let us not gratify the desires of the sinful nature. but rather to live by the Spirit. Keep us from pride and strife and jealousy. Let us be careful how we live out each day, making the most of every opportunity knowing how Satan often approaches with stealth and cunning.
Assurance of Pardon Steve Varys
Special Music “Wayfaring Stranger” - Negro Spiritual
arranged by Mark Johnson
I am a poor wayfaring stranger
While traveling through this world of woe
Yet there’s no sickness, toil nor danger
In that bright world to which I go
I’m going there to see my Father
I’m going there no more to roam
Refrain: I’m only going over Jordan
I’m only going over home
Prayer for Illumination Steve Varys
Old Testament Lesson: Joel 2: 25a, 26a, b, 28-29 (NIV)
25 I will repay you for the years the locusts have eaten--
26 You will have plenty to eat, until you are full,
and you will praise the name of the Lord your God
28 and afterward,
I will pour out my Spirit on all people.
Your sons and daughters will prophesy,
your old men will dram dreams,
29 even on my servants, both men and women
I will pour out my Spirit in those days.
Gospel Lesson: John 16:7 (NIV)
"I tell you the truth: it is for your good that I am going away. Unless I go away, the Counselor will not come to you; but if I go, I will send him to you."
Children’s Sermon
Epistle Lesson: Acts 2: 1-17, 22-24, 32-33, 37-41 (NIV)
1When the day of Pentecost came, they were all together in one place. 2Suddenly a sound like the blowing of a violent wind came from heaven and filled the whole house where they were sitting. 3They saw what seemed to be tongues of fire that separated and came to rest on each of them. 4All of them were filled with the Holy Spirit and began to speak in other tongues as the Spirit enabled them.
5Now there were staying in Jerusalem God-fearing Jews from every nation under heaven. 6When they heard this sound, a crowd came together in bewilderment, because each one heard them speaking in his own language. 7Utterly amazed, they asked: "Are not all these men who are speaking Galileans? 8Then how is it that each of us hears them in his own native language? 9Parthians, Medes and Elamites; residents of Mesopotamia, Judea and Cappadocia, Pontus and Asia, 10Phrygia and Pamphylia, Egypt and the parts of Libya near Cyrene; visitors from Rome 11(both Jews and converts to Judaism Cretans and Arabs—we hear them declaring the wonders of God in our own tongues!" 12Amazed and perplexed, they asked one another, "What does this mean?"
13Some, however, made fun of them and said, "They have had too much wine. "
14Then Peter stood up with the Eleven, raised his voice and addressed the crowd: "Fellow Jews and all of you who live in Jerusalem, let me explain this to you; listen carefully to what I say. 15These men are not drunk, as you suppose. It's only nine in the morning! 16No, this is what was spoken by the prophet Joel: 17" 'In the last days, God says, I will pour out my Spirit on all people. Your sons and daughters will prophesy, your young men will see visions, your old men will dream dreams. 22"Men of Israel, listen to this: Jesus of Nazareth was a man accredited by God to you by miracles, wonders and signs, which God did among you through him, as you yourselves know. 23This man was handed over to you by God's set purpose and foreknowledge; and you, with the help of wicked men, put him to death by nailing him to the cross. 24But God raised him from the dead, freeing him from the agony of death, because it was impossible for death to keep its hold on him. 32God has raised this Jesus to life, and we are all witnesses of the fact. 33Exalted to the right hand of God, he has received from the Father the promised Holy Spirit and has poured out what you now see and hear. 37When the people heard this, they were cut to the heart and said to Peter and the other apostles, "Brothers, what shall we do?"
38Peter replied, "Repent and be baptized, every one of you, in the name of Jesus Christ for the forgiveness of your sins. And you will receive the gift of the Holy Spirit. 39The promise is for you and your children and for all who are far off—for all whom the Lord our God will call."
40With many other words he warned them; and he pleaded with them, "Save yourselves from this corrupt generation." 41Those who accepted his message were baptized, and about three thousand were added to their number that day.

Offertory “Spirit of God in the Clear Running Water”
Words and tune: Miriam Therese Winter, 1965
Spirit of God in the clear running water,
Blowing to greatness the trees on the hill—
Spirit of God in the finger of morning, Fill the earth, bring it to birth,
And blow where You will.
Down in the meadow the willows are moaning,
Sheep in the pastureland cannot lie still;
Spirit of god, creation is groaning-- Fill the earth, bring it to birth,
And blow where you will.
Refrain: Blow, blow, blow till I be But breath of the Spirit blowing in me.
Please sign and pass the register located in the pew.

Worship
…is the quickening of conscience by God’s holiness;
the nourishment of mind with His truth;
the purifying of imagination by His beauty;
the opening of the heart to His love;
the surrender of the will to His purpose;
and all of this gathered up in adoration—
the most selfless emotion of which our nature is capable, and therefore the chief remedy for that self-centeredness which is our original sin and the source of all actual sin.” -William Temple
