The Order for the Worship of God

Faith Presbyterian Church 9:30 a.m., May 6, 2007
We invite all into a common discipline of silence as we gather for worship. Then we will greet and welcome one another into the presence of the Lord.

Prelude “Prelude IV”
Hermann Schroeder (Germany, 1904-1984)

“Love Divine, All Love's Excelling” Roger Wilson
(Words only on p. 568)

Greeting & Invocation

Hymn # 2 “God of Grace and God of Glory”
(Green Supplemental Hymnal)

Psalter: Psalm 46 (read responsively) David McKinnis
1God is our refuge and strength, a very present help in trouble.
2Therefore we will not fear, though the earth should change, though the mountains shake in the heart of the sea;
3though its waters roar and foam, though the mountains tremble with its tumult.
4There is a river whose streams make glad the city of God, the holy habitation of the Most High.
5God is in the midst of the city; it shall not be moved; God will help it when the morning dawns.
6The nations are in an uproar, the kingdoms totter; he utters his voice, the earth melts.
7The Lord of hosts is with us; the God of Jacob is our refuge.
8Come, behold the works of the Lord; see what desolations he has brought on the earth.
9He makes wars cease to the end of the earth; he breaks the bow, and shatters the spear; he burns the shields with fire.
10“Be still, and know that I am God! I am exalted among the nations, I am exalted in the earth.”
11The Lord of hosts is with us; the God of Jacob is our refuge.

Anthem “Sanctus” by Dave and Jean Perry

Prayer for Illumination David McKinnis

Old Testament Lesson: Joshua 3: 1 - 5 (Bible pg. 193)
David McKinnis
1Early in the morning Joshua rose and set out from Shittim with all the Israelites, and they came to the Jordan. They camped there before crossing over. 2At the end of three days the officers went through the camp 3and commanded the people, “When you see the ark of the covenant of the Lord your God being carried by the levitical priests, then you shall set out from your place. Follow it, 4so that you may know the way you should go, for you have not passed this way before. Yet there shall be a space between you and it, a distance of about two thousand cubits; do not come any nearer to it.” 5Then Joshua said to the people, “Sanctify yourselves; for tomorrow the Lord will do wonders among you.”

Lector: “This is the Word of God.”

Congregation: “Thanks be to God for His Word.”

Children’s Sermon

Hymn # 446 “If You But Trust in God to Guide You”
(Gray Psalter Hymnal)

New Testament Lesson: Acts 1: 3 – 14 (Bible pg. 991)
3After his suffering he presented himself alive to them by many convincing proofs, appearing to them during forty days and speaking about the kingdom of God. 4While staying with them, he ordered them not to leave Jerusalem, but to wait there for the promise of the Father. “This,” he said, “is what you have heard from me; 5for John baptized with water, but you will be baptized with the Holy Spirit not many days from now.”
6So when they had come together, they asked him, “Lord, is this the time when you will restore the kingdom to Israel?” 7He replied, “It is not for you to know the times or periods that the Father has set by his own authority. 8But you will receive power when the Holy Spirit has come upon you; and you will be my witnesses in Jerusalem, in all Judea and Samaria, and to the ends of the earth.” 9When he had said this, as they were watching, he was lifted up, and a cloud took him out of their sight. 10While he was going and they were gazing up toward heaven, suddenly two men in white robes stood by them. 11They said, “Men of Galilee, why do you stand looking up toward heaven? This Jesus, who has been taken up from you into heaven, will come in the same way as you saw him go into heaven.”
12Then they returned to Jerusalem from the mount called Olivet, which is near Jerusalem, a sabbath day’s journey away. 13When they had entered the city, they went to the room upstairs where they were staying, Peter, and John, and James, and Andrew, Philip and Thomas, Bartholomew and Matthew, James son of Alphaeus, and Simon the Zealot, and Judas son of James. 14All these were constantly devoting themselves to prayer, together with certain women, including Mary the mother of Jesus, as well as his brothers.

Worship
…is the quickening of conscience by God’s holiness;
the nourishment of mind with His truth;
the purifying of imagination by His beauty;
the opening of the heart to His love;
the surrender of the will to His purpose;
and all of this gathered up in adoration—
the most selfless emotion of which our nature is capable, and therefore the chief remedy for that self-centeredness which is our original sin and the source of all actual sin.” William Temple

Welcome
To all who are weary and seek rest; to all who mourn and long for comfort; to all who struggle and desire victory; to all who sin and need a Savior; to all who are idle and look for service; to all who are strangers and want fellowship; to all who hunger and thirst after righteousness; and to whosoever will come--this church opens wide her doors and offers her welcome in the name of Jesus Christ her Lord.
Guests please sign our guest book and join us in the Fellowship Hall after worship.
Babysitting is available during worship for infants up to 2-1/2 years old in the room behind the balcony. Children ages 2-1/2 through 5 will be in the Pre-School Nursery in the Education Wing. School age children worship with their parents.

Mission Notes

Lafayette Urban Ministry
Touching the future by helping children and families today
Poverty is the greatest thief. More than depriving a neighbor of food or shelter or warmth, it steals away hope. While other thieves may take away the past, poverty steals the future and self-respect. LUM is in the business of restoring human dignity. Through voluntary efforts and contributions they give back the hope, the future, and the self-respect which all God’s people need and deserve. They provide financial assistance, after school care, shelter, food and support, a children’s summer camp, distribute clothing, mentor teenage girls, and have a hike for hunger. They make Thanksgiving and Christmas holidays brighter for hundreds of families. LUM’s resolution is to help God’s children in need.

Life Care Services
Located two blocks south of the Purdue Memorial Union in West Lafayette, IN, Life Care Services strives to meet the physical, practical, emotional, and spiritual needs of women and families facing an unplanned pregnancy. LifeCare offers practical alternatives to abortion, provides pre- and post-natal education and long term counseling support, and also ministers to women and men who suffer from the effects of previous abortions. Recently, Life Care Services has begun offering abstinence education, and also provides a Spanish speaking counselor when needed.
