The Order for the Worship of God

Faith Presbyterian Church
9:30 a.m., July 22, 2007
Let the first tone of the organ be a call to quiet meditation in which all may become aware of God’s presence, and lift up a prayer for yourself and for Faith Church.

Prelude “Air” J.S. Bach (Germany, 1685-1750)

“I Want Jesus To Walk With Me” Gregg Sewell

Welcome, Announcements, and Greet One Another

Invocation

Hymn: # 253 “Praise to the Lord, the Almighty”
Gray Psalter Hymnal

Psalter: Psalm 1 (read responsively) Tom Van Horn
1 Blessed is the man who does not walk in the counsel of the wicked or stand in the way of sinners or sit in the seat of mockers.
2 But his delight is in the law of the LORD, and on his law he meditates day and night.
3 He is like a tree planted by streams of water, which yields its fruit in season and whose leaf does not wither. Whatever he does prospers.
4 Not so the wicked! They are like chaff that the wind blows away.
5 Therefore the wicked will not stand in the judgment, nor sinners in the assembly of the righteous.
6 For the LORD watches over the way of the righteous, but the way of the wicked will perish.

Prayer for Illumination Tom Van Horn

First Lesson: Matthew 13: 1 - 9 (NIV) Tom Van Horn
1That same day Jesus went out of the house and sat by the lake. 2Such large crowds gathered around him that he got into a boat and sat in it, while all the people stood on the shore. 3Then he told them many things in parables, saying: "A farmer went out to sow his seed. 4As he was scattering the seed, some fell along the path, and the birds came and ate it up. 5Some fell on rocky places, where it did not have much soil. It sprang up quickly, because the soil was shallow. 6But when the sun came up, the plants were scorched, and they withered because they had no root. 7Other seed fell among thorns, which grew up and choked the plants. 8Still other seed fell on good soil, where it produced a crop—a hundred, sixty or thirty times what was sown. 9He who has ears, let him hear."

Special Music “O, divine Redeemer” by Charles Gounod

Children’s Sermon

Second Lesson: Matthew 13: 18 - 23 (NIV) Tom Van Horn
18"Listen then to what the parable of the sower means: 19When anyone hears the message about the kingdom and does not understand it, the evil one comes and snatches away what was sown in his heart. This is the seed sown along the path. 20The one who received the seed that fell on rocky places is the man who hears the word and at once receives it with joy. 21But since he has no root, he lasts only a short time. When trouble or persecution comes because of the word, he quickly falls away. 22The one who received the seed that fell among the thorns is the man who hears the word, but the worries of this life and the deceitfulness of wealth choke it, making it unfruitful. 23But the one who received the seed that fell on good soil is the man who hears the word and understands it. He produces a crop, yielding a hundred, sixty or thirty times what was sown."

Lector: “This is the Word of God.”

Congregation: “Thanks be to God for His Word.”

Hymn: # 84 “Thy Word”

Gathering of Tithes and Offerings

Offertory “From God Shall Nought Divide Me”
Dietrich Buxtehude (Germany, 1637-1707)

From God shall nought divide me, For He is true for aye.
And on my path will guide me, Who, else, should often stray.
His ever bounteous hand By night and day is heedful,
And gives me what is needful, Where'er I go or stand.

Please sign and pass the register located in the pew.

Worship
…is the quickening of conscience by God’s holiness;
the nourishment of mind with His truth;
the purifying of imagination by His beauty;
the opening of the heart to His love;
the surrender of the will to His purpose;
and all of this gathered up in adoration—
the most selfless emotion of which our nature is capable, and therefore the chief remedy for that self-centeredness
which is our original sin and the source of all actual sin.”
William Temple

Welcome

Mission Notes

Priscilla Bible School
Priscilla Presbyterian Bible School was established to give residential training to girls by providing a three year course in basic and Christian education. This enables them to go back to their own communities and teach there. It has also established a Department of Music, teaching both vocal and instrumental music, which is open to non-boarding male and female students.

Jonathan & Ali Nichols
Jonathan and Ali work with the Seed and Harvest Ministry of the World Concern Organization (a Christian humanitarian organization that provides emergency relief and community development in some of the most neglected areas of the world). They are in Burkina Faso where they are providing agricultural understanding and assistance and also administer help to a small Bible School which is growing to meet the increasing demand for pastors.
