The Order for the Worship of God
Faith Presbyterian Church
9:30 a.m., August 19, 2007
Let the first tone of the organ be a call to quiet meditation in which all may become aware of God’s presence, and lift up a prayer for yourself and for Faith Church.
Prelude Liebster Jesu, wir sind hier See gray hymnal p. 280
2 settings by J.S. Bach
settings by Paul Manz and Randall Thompson
Look upon us, dearest Lord,
Take our wandering thoughts and guide us;
We are here to hear thy word,
With thy teaching now provide us,
That, from earth's distractions turning,
We thy message may be learning.

Invocation
Hymn: # 28 “Come, Thou Fount of Every Blessing”
(Green Supplemental Hymnal)
Psalter: Psalm 71: 1 – 6 NIV (read responsively) Mike Bergmann
1In you, O LORD, I have taken refuge; let me never be put to shame.
2Rescue me and deliver me in your righteousness; turn your ear to me and save me.
3Be my rock of refuge, to which I can always go; give the command to save me, for you are my rock and my fortress.
4Deliver me, O my God, from the hand of the wicked, from the grasp of evil and cruel men.
5For you have been my hope, O Sovereign LORD, my confidence since my youth.
6From birth I have relied on you; you brought me forth from my mother's womb. I will ever praise you.
Prayer for Illumination Mike Bergmann
First Lesson: Hebrews 7: 18 – 19, 23 – 28 Mike Bergmann
18The former regulation is set aside because it was weak and useless 19(for the law made nothing perfect), and a better hope is introduced, by which we draw near to God…
23Now there have been many of those priests, since death prevented them from continuing in office; 24but because Jesus lives forever, he has a permanent priesthood. 25Therefore he is able to save completely those who come to God through him, because he always lives to intercede for them.
26Such a high priest meets our need—one who is holy, blameless, pure, set apart from sinners, exalted above the heavens. 27Unlike the other high priests, he does not need to offer sacrifices day after day, first for his own sins, and then for the sins of the people. He sacrificed for their sins once for all when he offered himself. 28For the law appoints as high priests men who are weak; but the oath, which came after the law, appointed the Son, who has been made perfect forever.
Special Music Prelude by J. S. Bach Alexandra Dubikovsky
Children’s Sermon
Second Lesson: 1 Thessalonians 5: 8 Mike Bergmann
8But since we belong to the day, let us be self-controlled, putting on faith and love as a breastplate, and the hope of salvation as a helmet.
1 Peter 1: 13 Mike Bergmann
13Therefore, prepare your minds for action; be self-controlled; set your hope fully on the grace to be given you when Jesus Christ is revealed.
Lector: “This is the Word of God.”
Congregation: “Thanks be to God for His Word.”
Hymn: # 524 “Hope of the World” (Gray Psalter Hymnal)
Sermon: Series: “The Cardinal Virtues”
# 2 “A Thumb’s Up Hope”
Pastor Ronald M. Green
Confession of Faith Question 1 - Heidelberg Catechism
Question: What is your only comfort, in life and in death?
Answer: That I belong—body and soul, in life and in death—not to myself but to my faithful Savior, Jesus Christ, who at the cost of his own blood has fully paid for all my sins and has completely freed me from the dominion of the devil; that he protects me so well that without the will of my Father in heaven not a hair can fall from my head; indeed, that everything must fit his purpose for my salvation. Therefore, by his Holy Spirit, he also assures me of eternal life, and makes me wholeheartedly willing and ready from now on to live for him.

Worship
…is the quickening of conscience by God’s holiness;
the nourishment of mind with His truth;
the purifying of imagination by His beauty;
the opening of the heart to His love;
the surrender of the will to His purpose;
and all of this gathered up in adoration—
the most selfless emotion of which our nature is capable, and therefore the chief remedy for that self-centeredness which is our original sin and the source of all actual sin.” William Temple
Welcome
To all who are weary and seek rest; to all who mourn and long for comfort; to all who struggle and desire victory; to all who sin and need a Savior; to all who are idle and look for service; to all who are strangers and want fellowship; to all who hunger and thirst after righteousness; and to whosoever will come--this church opens wide her doors and offers her welcome in the name of Jesus Christ her Lord.
Guests please sign our guest book and join us in the Fellowship Hall after worship.
Babysitting is available during worship for infants up to 2-1/2 years old in the room behind the balcony. Children ages 2-1/2 through 5 will be in the Pre-School Nursery in the Education Wing. School age children worship with their parents.

It exists for the major reason of helping those working internationally with the poor to be more effective, especially in the area of agriculture. The mission: network with community leaders in developing countries to seek hunger solutions for families growing food under difficult conditions . The vision: to bring glory to God and a blessing to mankind by using science and technology to help the poor.

Trinity Mission teaches people to be responsible for their lives and actions and shows them how to live with respect to the Gospel. This fall semester we will do something different: read and discuss the Heidelberg Catechism. Heidelberg is the warmest and least polemical of the reformed catechisms and is a good summary of reformed teaching and its Biblical basis. Copies of the catechism will be provided. None of us will agree with everything Ursinus and Olevianous wrote in 1563, so stretch your mind by pondering a text that we often use in worship.
Organ Appreciation Class: If you would like to know more about our organ, you can gain a better understanding of our little 'King of Instruments' by attending an organ appreciation class on Sunday, August 19, at 11:00 a.m.

MISSION SUNDAY
An Invitation to Mission Sunday
Next Sunday, the deacons will showcase the missions which the congregation of Faith Presbyterian Church supports. These missions range from the support of an individual to large organizations, from here in Lafayette to far away places such as Burkino Faso. Each deacon corresponds with one or more of the missions, and will put on a display in the fellowship hall during coffee time after the service next week. Please join the deacons and see how far and wide your offerings from our church travel.
Presbyterian Habitat House
Sign-up sheets are in the narthex for Faith's two scheduled work days. We will begin construction September 29 in Stockwell (two weeks later than originally planned). Faith will be sending 5-6 volunteers each of two Saturdays; October 6 and October 20.
Please contact Dan Trinkle if you have any questions.
Recycling for Habitat for Humanity: There is a aluminum can recycling box in the narthex. Please help the Boy Scouts and Habitat collect enough cans to fund the Boy Scout house build.
