The Order for the Worship of God

Faith Presbyterian Church
9:30 a.m., September 23, 2007
Let the first tone of the organ be a call to quiet meditation in which all may become aware of God’s presence, and lift up a prayer for yourself and for Faith Church.

Prelude “Salvation Unto Us Has Come”
(Chorale and Prelude)
J.S. Bach (Germany, 1685-1750)

Salvation unto us has come by God's free grace and favor;
Good works cannot avert our doom, they help and save us never.
Faith looks to Jesus Christ alone, who did for all the world atone;
He is our one redeemer.

“At the Name of Jesus” Peter Stearns
(See gray hymnal, p. 467)

Invocation

Hymn # 27 “We’ve a Story to Tell to the Nations”
(Green Supplemental Hymnal)

Psalter: Psalm 91: 1 – 4, 9 – 10, 14 – 16 (read responsively)
Jerry Matthews
1 He who dwells in the shelter of the Most High will rest in the shadow of the Almighty.
2 I will say of the LORD, "He is my refuge and my fortress, my God, in whom I trust."
3 Surely he will save you from the fowler's snare and from the deadly pestilence.
4 He will cover you with his feathers, and under his wings you will find refuge; his faithfulness will be your shield and rampart.
9 If you make the Most High your dwelling—even the LORD, who is my refuge
10 then no harm will befall you, no disaster will come near your tent.
14 "Because he loves me," says the LORD, "I will rescue him; I will protect him, for he acknowledges my name.
15 He will call upon me, and I will answer him; I will be with him in trouble, I will deliver him and honor him.
16 With long life will I satisfy him and show him my salvation."

Prayer for Illumination Jerry Matthews

First Lesson: Matthew 28: 18 - 20 NIV Jerry Matthews
18Then Jesus came to them and said, "All authority in heaven and on earth has been given to me. 19Therefore go and make disciples of all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit, 20and teaching them to obey everything I have commanded you. And surely I am with you always, to the very end of the age."

Anthem “Thy Glory Shines” Earlene Rentz

My God, the love and glory of thy majesty shine wondrous bright.
Wondrous thou art, and for all time, O, everlasting Lord of all.
Thy loving arms, secure and strong,
Hold me when pain and nights are long.

Children’s Sermon

Second Lesson: Acts 8: 26 - 40 NIV Jerry Matthews
26Now an angel of the Lord said to Philip, "Go south to the road—the desert road—that goes down from Jerusalem to Gaza." 27So he started out, and on his way he met an Ethiopian eunuch, an important official in charge of all the treasury of Candace, queen of the Ethiopians. This man had gone to Jerusalem to worship, 28and on his way home was sitting in his chariot reading the book of Isaiah the prophet. 29The Spirit told Philip, "Go to that chariot and stay near it."
30Then Philip ran up to the chariot and heard the man reading Isaiah the prophet. "Do you understand what you are reading?" Philip asked.
31"How can I," he said, "unless someone explains it to me?" So he invited Philip to come up and sit with him.
32The eunuch was reading this passage of Scripture: "He was led like a sheep to the slaughter, and as a lamb before the shearer is silent, so he did not open his mouth. 33In his humiliation he was deprived of justice. Who can speak of his descendants? For his life was taken from the earth."
34The eunuch asked Philip, "Tell me, please, who is the prophet talking about, himself or someone else?" 35Then Philip began with that very passage of Scripture and told him the good news about Jesus.
36As they traveled along the road, they came to some water and the eunuch said, "Look, here is water. Why shouldn't I be baptized?" 38And he gave orders to stop the chariot. Then both Philip and the eunuch went down into the water and Philip baptized him. 39When they came up out of the water, the Spirit of the Lord suddenly took Philip away, and the eunuch did not see him again, but went on his way rejoicing. 40Philip, however, appeared at Azotus and traveled about, preaching the gospel in all the towns until he reached Caesarea.

Worship
…is the quickening of conscience by God’s holiness;
the nourishment of mind with His truth;
the purifying of imagination by His beauty;
the opening of the heart to His love;
the surrender of the will to His purpose;
and all of this gathered up in adoration—
the most selfless emotion of which our nature is capable, and therefore the chief remedy for that self-centeredness which is our original sin and the source of all actual sin.” William Temple

Welcome
To all who are weary and seek rest; to all who mourn and long for comfort; to all who struggle and desire victory; to all who sin and need a Savior; to all who are idle and look for service; to all who are strangers and want fellowship; to all who hunger and thirst after righteousness; and to whosoever will come--this church opens wide her doors and offers her welcome in the name of Jesus Christ her Lord.
Guests please sign our guest book and join us in the Fellowship Hall after worship.
Babysitting is available during worship for infants up to 2-1/2 years old in the room behind the balcony. Children ages 2-1/2 through 5 will be in the Pre-School Nursery in the Education Wing. School age children worship with their parents.

Mission Notes

Jonathan & Ali Nichols (Burkina Faso, West Africa)
Seed and Harvest Ministry of World Concern
Jonathan and Ali work with the Seed and Harvest Ministry of the World Concern Organization (a Christian humanitarian organization that provides emergency relief and community development in some of the most neglected areas of the world). They are in Burkina Faso where they are providing agricultural understanding and assistance and also administer help to a small Bible School which is growing to meet the increasing demand for pastors.

Rev. Jack & Mary Anne Voelkel (IVCF)
We are in the lovely city of Medellín, Colombia, where both of us are teaching classes in the Biblical Seminary, which we enjoy doing once a year. It’s such a great privilege to come and share with students who will soon be pastors, many of them in dangerous situations.
This past year we have continued on with our normal projects:
• Mary Anne works half time for Inter Varsity in the area of stimulating prayer and spiritual formation. She has been busy with retreats and conferences as well as planning for future events. She provides intercessors to pray for training conferences and is pleased that individuals she has trained will be taking over the leadership she has given for several years, as of July 2008.
• Jack continues writing his two columns on the urbana.org web-site (Ask Jack; Great Cloud of Witnesses), as well as teaching two months in Colombia, and a volume of correspondence with both missionaries and Colombian leaders who seek his counsel.
Just recently, Jack has been asked to serve the Latin America Mission as Interim President, a duty he’ll assume as of October 9th. The present president is resigning and unexpectedly the candidate they had chosen backed out at the last minute. As a result, both of us will temporarily be moving to Miami in October. It goes without saying that we covet mightily your prayers for us as we take on this new challenge. It will undoubtedly involve both of us in much travel, as we visit missionaries on the various fields as well as represent the mission in churches and entities here in the U.S.

As the congregation prepares to call a new permanent pastor, we are in the final stages of completing a congregational reflection study that is required prior to forming a Pastor Nominating Committee. Thanks to all members and friends that attended one of the discussion sessions and/or completed one of the surveys. We had a total attendance of 66 at the three meetings. TODAY, SEPTEMBER 23rd. IS THE LAST DAY TO TURN IN A COMPLETED SURVEY. PLEASE SUBMIT TO THE CHURCH OFFICE. Blank copies are available on the table in the hallway outside the church office.
The Session will review the results of the survey at their October meeting. A congregational meeting to report the findings will be called by the Session in late October.
