Psalter: Psalm 116: 1, 3 – 7, 15 (read responsively) Lonni Kucik
1 I love the LORD, for he heard my voice; he heard my cry for mercy.
3 The cords of death entangled me, the anguish of the grave came upon me; I was overcome by trouble and sorrow.
4 Then I called on the name of the LORD : "O LORD, save me!"
5 The LORD is gracious and righteous; our God is full of compassion.
6 The LORD protects the simple-hearted; when I was in great need, he saved me.
7 Be at rest once more, O my soul, for the LORD has been good to you.
15 Precious in the sight of the LORD is the death of his saints.
Prayer for Illumination Lonni Kucik
First Lesson: Luke 23: 32, 39 – 43 NIV Lonni Kucik
32Two other men, both criminals, were also led out with him to be executed.
39One of the criminals who hung there hurled insults at him: "Aren't you the Christ? Save yourself and us!"
40But the other criminal rebuked him. "Don't you fear God," he said, "since you are under the same sentence? 41We are punished justly, for we are getting what our deeds deserve. But this man has done nothing wrong."
42Then he said, "Jesus, remember me when you come into your kingdom."
43Jesus answered him, "I tell you the truth, today you will be with me in paradise."
Hebrew 9: 26b – 28 NIV Lonni Kucik
26Now he has appeared once for all at the end of the ages to do away with sin by the sacrifice of himself. 27Just as man is destined to die once, and after that to face judgment, 28so Christ was sacrificed once to take away the sins of many people; and he will appear a second time, not to bear sin, but to bring salvation to those who are waiting for him.
Anthem “O Lord, Our God, By Whom We Live” Tchaikovsky
Children’s Sermon
Second Lesson: Revelations 6: 9 - 11 NIV Lonni Kucik
9When he opened the fifth seal, I saw under the altar the souls of those who had been slain because of the word of God and the testimony they had maintained. 10They called out in a loud voice, "How long, Sovereign Lord, holy and true, until you judge the inhabitants of the earth and avenge our blood?" 11Then each of them was given a white robe, and they were told to wait a little longer, until the number of their fellow servants and brothers who were to be killed as they had been was completed.
Lector: “This is the Word of God.”
Congregation: “Thanks be to God for His Word.”
Hymn # 502 “The Church’s One Foundation”
Sermon: Series “When the Silver Cord is Severed”
“What Happens To Soul When You Die?”
Pastor Ronald M. Green
After the sermon children in grades K-6 may leave for children’s choir
Confession of Faith: Westminster Larger Catechism Q. 86
Question: What is the communion in glory with Christ, which the members of the invisible church enjoy immediately after death?
Answer: The communion in glory with Christ, which the members of the invisible church enjoy immediately after death, is in that their souls are then made perfect in holiness, and received into the highest heavens, where they behold the face of God in light and glory; waiting for the full redemption of their bodies, who even in death continue united to Christ, and rest in their graves as in their beds, till at the last day they be again united to their souls.

Postlude Variation VII from Partita on "Marching to Zion"
Worship
…is the quickening of conscience by God’s holiness;
the nourishment of mind with His truth;
the purifying of imagination by His beauty;
the opening of the heart to His love;
the surrender of the will to His purpose;
and all of this gathered up in adoration—
the most selfless emotion of which our nature is capable, and therefore the chief remedy for that self-centeredness which is our original sin and the source of all actual sin.” William Temple
Welcome
To all who are weary and seek rest; to all who mourn and long for comfort; to all who struggle and desire victory; to all who sin and need a Savior; to all who are idle and look for service; to all who are strangers and want fellowship; to all who hunger and thirst after righteousness; and to whosoever will come--this church opens wide her doors and offers her welcome in the name of Jesus Christ her Lord.
Guests please sign our guest book and join us in the Fellowship Hall after worship.
Babysitting is available during worship for infants up to 2-1/2 years old in the room behind the balcony. Children ages 2-1/2 through 5 will be in the Pre-School Nursery in the Education Wing. School age children worship with their parents.
Music Notes
"Marching to Zion" was written by Robert Lowry in 1867. Other popular hymns by Dr. Lowry included "At the River", "Need", "Something for Jesus" and "All the Way". Arranger Jon Spong was director of music and organist at the First Baptist Church of Philadelphia from 1987 until his retirement in 1993. It is interesting that the original composer of "Marching to Zion" was baptized as a teenager at the same church approximately 150 years earlier and taught in one of the church's mission Sunday schools in a poor neighborhood for five years. (Adapted from introductory notes in the publication of Dr. Spong's arrangement.)
Mission Notes
Greg and Faith Hurst
The Hurst Family has served eight years as SIM missionaries in La Paz, Bolivia. When they first arrived to Bolivia, Greg and Faith began to disciple a group of young people in their local church in La Paz with a goal that some would eventually lead the church’s youth ministry while another group of these Bolivian young adults, and their families, would be sent out with the Hurst Family to start a new church. When Greg and Faith return to Bolivia, they will continue to prepare their church planting team to launch a new church in Mallasilla, an emerging suburb that has no Evangelical church.
In Bolivia the Hurst Family are committed to making disciples so that the Bolivian church will become a mature witness of Christ in La Paz, rural Bolivia and to the ends of the earth (Acts 1:8). Through the years their main ministry has focused on discipleship through youth ministry and church planting. Along the way, they also have helped to establish an English-speaking, Christian international school (http://www.nics.org/schools/lapaz.php ) and to start two economic development projects (www.cafeyungas.org and www.vivabolivia.org/lapazproducts) as well as have served in SIM mission leadership.

Nominations for Elders and Deacons – The nominating committee invites the congregation to read the explanation, in the October Faith Church newsletter, concerning how we ought to select elders and deacons. In light of that, please prayerfully consider who you think might be a good person to serve in one of those ways. You can write your suggestions for candidates on a piece of paper and place them in the small cardboard box with a church painted on it that will be sitting on the table in the narthex. Keep in mind that only those who are members of Faith Church can serve as an elder or deacon. You’ll need to place your suggestions in that box by Sunday, October 14.
The Halloween Alternative Event has been cancelled due to lack of volunteers. Thanks to those who did express interest and willingness.
Special Congregational Gathering – There will be a special congregational gathering held on Sunday, October 21 from 10:45am – 11:15am for a briefing on the Reflection Study and for receiving commentary from the Congregation. Copies of the results will be available in the Narthex today, Sunday, October 14.
HYMN SING – Starting TODAY, Sunday, October 14, and the following three weeks, we will start a hymn sing. Please join us at 9:20am.
During October, Pastor Ron is doing a series on what the Bible has to say about “What Happens to a Person when He or She Dies”. If you, yourself, have related questions on this topic you’d like him to address, please let him know, either in conversation or through a note. The three week series begins on October 14.
Now’s your chance.

Jubilee Christmas Assistant Coordinator
Hurrah! Donna Lofgren has volunteered to coordinate Jubilee Christmas this year BUT we still need an Assistant Coordinator. This post usually will involve going to a couple of meetings at LUM (October 16 and November 13) and helping the week before the actual Jubilee Christmas event (December 15). It would be a bonus if the volunteer would agree too hold a coordinator position for two years but if you can only manage one, we’ll be very happy.
If you are interested in this most rewarding post, please contact one of us.
