The Order for the Worship of God

Faith Presbyterian Church
9:30 a.m., November 4, 2007
Let the first tone of the organ be a call to quiet meditation in which all may become aware of God’s presence, and lift up a prayer for yourself and for Faith Church.

Welcome, Announcements, and Greet One Another

Invocation

Hymn # 91 “As the Deer” Green Supplemental Hymnal

Call to Confession Nancy Dunn
With a mighty hand the Lord brought Israel out of Egypt, out of the land of slavery. With his mighty hand, he has promised as well to deliver us from the bondage of sin. Let us confess our sins to God Almighty.

Prayer of Confession (in unison) Nancy Dunn
Dear God, we confess that we do not always do what you have commanded. You encourage us to give as you have given to us, but often our giving is motivated by self-interest as much as by thankfulness and compassion. You have taught us to forgive our enemies and pray for those who persecute us, yet we have done neither. You call us not to condemn or judge others, yet we rush to do both. We recognize our failure to live up to your high standard and ask once more for pardon and renewal. In Jesus’ name, we pray. Amen.

Declaration of Pardon Pastor Green
The mercy of the Lord is from everlasting to everlasting I declare to you, in the name of Jesus Christ, you are forgiven. May the God of mercy, who forgives you all your sin, strengthen you in all goodness, and by the power of the Holy Spirit keep you in eternal life. Amen.

Prayer for Illumination Nancy Dunn

First Lesson: Romans 1: 11 – 17 (NIV) Nancy Dunn
11I long to see you so that I may impart to you some spiritual gift to make you strong 12that is, that you and I may be mutually encouraged by each other's faith. 13I do not want you to be unaware, brothers, that I planned many times to come to you (but have been prevented from doing so until now) in order that I might have a harvest among you, just as I have had among the other Gentiles.
14I am obligated both to Greeks and non-Greeks, both to the wise and the foolish. 15That is why I am so eager to preach the gospel also to you who are at Rome.
16I am not ashamed of the gospel, because it is the power of God for the salvation of everyone who believes: first for the Jew, then for the Gentile. 17For in the gospel a righteousness from God is revealed, a righteousness that is by faith from first to last, just as it is written: "The righteous will live by faith.”

Anthem “A Communion Meditation” Don Besing

Children’s Sermon

Second Lesson: Philippians 3: 1 - 16 (NIV) Nancy Dunn
1Finally, my brothers, rejoice in the Lord! It is no trouble for me to write the same things to you again, and it is a safeguard for you.
2Watch out for those dogs, those men who do evil, those mutilators of the flesh. 3For it is we who are the circumcision, we who worship by the Spirit of God, who glory in Christ Jesus, and who put no confidence in the flesh— 4though I myself have reasons for such confidence. If anyone else thinks he has reasons to put confidence in the flesh, I have more: 5circumcised on the eighth day, of the people of Israel, of the tribe of Benjamin, a Hebrew of Hebrews; in regard to the law, a Pharisee; 6as for zeal, persecuting the church; as for legalistic righteousness, faultless.
7But whatever was to my profit I now consider loss for the sake of Christ. 8What is more, I consider everything a loss compared to the surpassing greatness of knowing Christ Jesus my Lord, for whose sake I have lost all things. I consider them rubbish, that I may gain Christ 9and be found in him, not having a righteousness of my own that comes from the law, but that which is through faith in Christ—the righteousness that comes from God and is by faith. 10I want to know Christ and the power of his resurrection and the fellowship of sharing in his sufferings, becoming like him in his death, 11and so, somehow, to attain to the resurrection from the dead.
12Not that I have already obtained all this, or have already been made perfect, but I press on to take hold of that for which Christ Jesus took hold of me. 13Brothers, I do not consider myself yet to have taken hold of it. But one thing I do: Forgetting what is behind and straining toward what is ahead, 14I press on toward the goal to win the prize for which God has called me heavenward in Christ Jesus.
15All of us who are mature should take such a view of things. And if on some point you think differently, that too God will make clear to you. 16Only let us live up to what we have already attained.

Lector: “This is the Word of God.”

Congregation: “Thanks be to God for His Word.”

Response
Give thanks with a grateful heart,
Give thanks to the Holy One,
Give thanks because He’s given Jesus Christ, His Son (repeat)
And now let the weak say, “I am strong!”
Let the poor say,
“I am rich, because of what the Lord has done for us!”
Give thanks with a grateful heart,
Give thanks to the Holy One,
Give thanks because He’s given Jesus Christ, His Son.
Give thanks. Give thanks.

Hymn # 310 “Bread of the World, in Mercy Broken”

The Lord’s Supper

Giving and receiving of the Bread and Cup
The inside cups are white grape juice; the outer cups contain wine.

Prayer of Consecration (in unison)
We thank you, O Lord, for this your sacred meal. Please accept our sacrifice of praise and thanksgiving; and, as we leave this table, we offer ourselves as living sacrifices-- praying that our lives may be holy and acceptable to you. In your mercy we ask you to fulfill in us the purpose of your redeeming love. Amen

Hymn # 263 “Just as I Am, without One Plea”

Benediction

Postlude “March Pontificale”
Jacques Lemmens (Belgium, 1823 – 1881)

Worship
…is the quickening of conscience by God’s holiness;
the nourishment of mind with His truth;
the purifying of imagination by His beauty;
the opening of the heart to His love;
the surrender of the will to His purpose;
and all of this gathered up in adoration—
the most selfless emotion of which our nature is capable, and therefore the chief remedy for that self-centeredness which is our original sin and the source of all actual sin.” -William Temple

Music Words

“Pass Me Not, O Gentle Savior”
3. Trusting only in Thy merit, would I seek Thy face;
Heal my wounded, broken spirit, save me by Thy grace.

(Refrain) Savior, Savior, Hear my humble cry;
While on others Thou art calling, Do not pass me by.

4. Thou the spring of all my comfort, more than life to me,
Whom have I on earth beside Thee? Whom in heaven but Thee?
(Refrain)

Purdue Crew
What we are doing is "renting" out our manual labor for people in the community. This is typically only advertised to Purdue Faculty, but I know that people would be interested in finding help with yard work. There is more information on our website if you visit http://www.boilerrowing.com/crew and click on "rent-a-rower" or you could e-mail me back at purdue.rentarower@gmail.com, purdue.rentarower@gmail.com
A little more information about our fundraiser. A person can "rent" a rower on one of two selected dates November 3rd or 11th. For each rower that the patron rents they will have that rower for up to 5 hours for a cost of $65. This is great if people in your community have large yards that need to be raked for the winter or if they have holes that need to be dug, or furniture that needs to be moved.
