(See gray hymnal p. 621)

Welcome, Announcements, and Greet One Another

Invocation

Hymn # 383 “O Sacred Head, Now Wounded”

Psalter: Psalm 107: 1 – 3, 8 - 9 NIV (read responsively)
Jurgen Honig
1 Give thanks to the LORD, for he is good; his love endures forever.
2 Let the redeemed of the LORD say this— those he redeemed from the hand of the foe,
3 those he gathered from the lands, from east and west, from north and south.
8 Let them give thanks to the LORD for his unfailing love and his wonderful deeds for men,
9 for he satisfies the thirsty and fills the hungry with good things.

Prayer for Illumination Jurgen Honig

First Lesson: Luke 20: 1 - 8 NIV Jurgen Honig
1One day as he was teaching the people in the temple courts and preaching the gospel, the chief priests and the teachers of the law, together with the elders, came up to him. 2"Tell us by what authority you are doing these things," they said. "Who gave you this authority?"
3He replied, "I will also ask you a question. Tell me, 4John's baptism—was it from heaven, or from men?"
5They discussed it among themselves and said, "If we say, 'From heaven,' he will ask, 'Why didn't you believe him?' 6But if we say, 'From men,' all the people will stone us, because they are persuaded that John was a prophet."
7So they answered, "We don't know where it was from."
8Jesus said, "Neither will I tell you by what authority I am doing these things."

Anthem “Sing Ye Praise to Our King” Aaron Copland

Children’s Sermon

Second Lesson: John 11: 45 - 50 NIV Jurgen Honig
45Therefore many of the Jews who had come to visit Mary, and had seen what Jesus did, put their faith in him. 46But some of them went to the Pharisees and told them what Jesus had done. 47Then the chief priests and the Pharisees called a meeting of the Sanhedrin.
"What are we accomplishing?" they asked. "Here is this man performing many miraculous signs. 48If we let him go on like this, everyone will believe in him, and then the Romans will come and take away both our place and our nation."
49Then one of them, named Caiaphas, who was high priest that year, spoke up, "You know nothing at all! 50You do not realize that it is better for you that one man die for the people than that the whole nation perish."

Lector: “This is the Word of God.”

Congregation: “Thanks be to God for His Word.”

Hymn # 482 “Man of Sorrows—What a Name”

Sermon Series: “Why Did Jesus Have to Die?”
# 3 “Caiaphas”

After the sermon children in grades K-6 may leave for children’s choir

Worship
…is the quickening of conscience by God’s holiness;
the nourishment of mind with His truth;
the purifying of imagination by His beauty;
the opening of the heart to His love;
the surrender of the will to His purpose;
and all of this gathered up in adoration—
the most selfless emotion of which our nature is capable, and therefore the chief remedy for that self-centeredness which is our original sin and the source of all actual sin.” -William Temple

Welcome
To all who are weary and seek rest; to all who mourn and long for comfort; to all who struggle and desire victory; to all who sin and need a Savior; to all who are idle and look for service; to all who are strangers and want fellowship; to all who hunger and thirst after righteousness; and to whosoever will come--this church opens wide her doors and offers her welcome in the name of Jesus Christ her Lord.
Guests please sign our guest book and join us in the Fellowship Hall after worship.
Babysitting is available during worship for infants up to
2-1/2 years old in the room behind the balcony. Children ages 2-1/2 through 5 will be in the Pre-School Nursery in the Education Wing. School age children worship with their parents.

Mission Notes

Lafayette Urban Ministry
Poverty is the greatest thief. More than depriving a neighbor of food or shelter or warmth, it steals away hope. While other thieves may take away the past, poverty steals the future and self-respect. LUM is in the business of restoring human dignity. Through voluntary efforts and contributions they give back the hope, the future, and the self-respect which all God’s people need and deserve. They provide financial assistance, after school care, shelter, food and support, a children’s summer camp, distribute clothing, mentor teenage girls, and have a hike for hunger. They make Thanksgiving and Christmas holidays brighter for hundreds of families. LUM’s resolution is to help God’s children in need.

Jonathan & Ali Nichols
World Concern

Jonathan and Ali work with the Seed and Harvest Ministry of the World Concern Organization (a Christian humanitarian organization that provides emergency relief and community development in some of the most neglected areas of the world). They are in Burkina Faso where they are providing agricultural understanding and assistance and also administer help to a small Bible School which is growing to meet the increasing demand for pastors.
