The Order for the Worship of God

Faith Presbyterian Church 7:30 p.m., March 20, 2008
Let the first tone of the organ be a call to quiet meditation in which all may become aware of God’s presence, and lift up a prayer for yourself and for Faith Church.
Maundy Thursday

Prelude Fugue in A-flat Minor Johannes Brahms (1833-1897)

“O Sacred Head Now Wounded” J.S. Bach (1685-1750)

“When Jesus Wept” Robert Powell

When Jesus wept, the falling tear in mercy flowed beyond all bounds;
When Jesus groaned, a trembling fear seized all the guilty world around.

The New England Psalm Singer, 1770

Invocation

Hymn # 384 “When I Survey the Wondrous Cross”

Prayer of Confession
Almighty and most merciful Father; We have erred and strayed from Thy ways like lost sheep. We have followed too much the devices and desires of our own hearts. We have offended against Thy holy laws. We have left undone those things which we ought to have done; And we have done those things which we ought not to have done; And there is no health in us. O Lord, have mercy upon us. Spare those, O God, who confess their faults. Restore those who are penitent; According to Thy promises declared unto us in Christ Jesus our Lord. And grant, O most merciful Father, for His sake, that we may hereafter live a godly, righteous, and sober life; to the glory of Thy holy name. Amen.

Assurance of Pardon

“The Darkness of Parting and Betrayal” Luke 22: 15 – 20 NIV (The Last Supper) Nancy Dunn 15And he said to them, "I have eagerly desired to eat this Passover with you before I suffer. 16For I tell you, I will not eat it again until it finds fulfillment in the kingdom of God."
17After taking the cup, he gave thanks and said, "Take this and divide it among you. 18For I tell you I will not drink again of the fruit of the vine until the kingdom of God comes."
19And he took bread, gave thanks and broke it, and gave it to them, saying, "This is my body given for you; do this in remembrance of me."
20In the same way, after the supper he took the cup, saying, "This cup is the new covenant in my blood, which is poured out for you.

Matthew 26: 20 – 25 NIV (Jesus Foretells His Betrayal)
20When evening came, Jesus was reclining at the table with the Twelve. 21And while they were eating, he said, "I tell you the truth, one of you will betray me."
22They were very sad and began to say to him one after the other, "Surely not I, Lord?"
23Jesus replied, "The one who has dipped his hand into the bowl with me will betray me. 24The Son of Man will go just as it is written about him. But woe to that man who betrays the Son of Man! It would be better for him if he had not been born."
25Then Judas, the one who would betray him, said, "Surely not I, Rabbi?" Jesus answered, "Yes, it is you."

Hymn # 386 “Ah, Holy Jesus, How Have You Offended”

“The Darkness of Desertion and Inner Anguish”
Matthew 26: 30 –35 NIV (Peter’s Denial Predicted)
Sergey Dubikovsky
30When they had sung a hymn, they went out to the Mount of Olives.
31Then Jesus told them, "This very night you will all fall away on account of me, for it is written: " 'I will strike the shepherd, and the sheep of the flock will be scattered.' 32But after I have risen, I will go ahead of you into Galilee."
33Peter replied, "Even if all fall away on account of you, I never will."
34"I tell you the truth," Jesus answered, "this very night, before the rooster crows, you will disown me three times."
35But Peter declared, "Even if I have to die with you, I will never disown you." And all the other disciples said the same.

Luke 22: 39 – 44 NIV (Garden of Gethsemane)
39Jesus went out as usual to the Mount of Olives, and his disciples followed him. 40On reaching the place, he said to them, "Pray that you will not fall into temptation." 41He withdrew about a stone's throw beyond them, knelt down and prayed, 42"Father, if you are willing, take this cup from me; yet not my will, but yours be done." 43An angel from heaven appeared to him and strengthened him. 44And being in anguish, he prayed more earnestly, and his sweat was like drops of blood falling to the ground.

Hymn “’Tis Midnight; and on Olive’s Brow” insert

“The Darkness of Broken Trust and Jealousy”
Luke 22: 47 – 48 NIV (Jesus Arrested) David McKinnis
47While he was still speaking a crowd came up, and the man who was called Judas, one of the Twelve, was leading them. He approached Jesus to kiss him, 48but Jesus asked him, "Judas, are you betraying the Son of Man with a kiss?"

Matthew 26: 57, 59 – 68 NIV (Jesus Before Sanhedrin)
57Those who had arrested Jesus took him to Caiaphas, the high priest, where the teachers of the law and the elders had assembled.
59The chief priests and the whole Sanhedrin were looking for false evidence against Jesus so that they could put him to death. 60But they did not find any, though many false witnesses came forward.
Finally two came forward 61and declared, "This fellow said, 'I am able to destroy the temple of God and rebuild it in three days.' "
62Then the high priest stood up and said to Jesus, "Are you not going to answer? What is this testimony that these men are bringing against you?" 63But Jesus remained silent. The high priest said to him, "I charge you under oath by the living God: Tell us if you are the Christ, the Son of God."
64"Yes, it is as you say," Jesus replied. "But I say to all of you: In the future you will see the Son of Man sitting at the right hand of the Mighty One and coming on the clouds of heaven."
65Then the high priest tore his clothes and said, "He has spoken blasphemy! Why do we need any more witnesses? Look, now you have heard the blasphemy. 66What do you think?" "He is worthy of death," they answered.
67Then they spit in his face and struck him with their fists. Others slapped him 68and said, "Prophesy to us, Christ. Who hit you?"

Anthem “Behold the Man” Mark Patterson

“The Darkness of Suffering and Gall”
Matthew 27: 1 – 2 NIV (Jesus Delivered to Pilate) Ann Freeman
1Early in the morning, all the chief priests and the elders of the people came to the decision to put Jesus to death. 2They bound him, led him away and handed him over to Pilate, the governor.

Mark 15: 15 – 20 NIV (Jesus Mocked by Soldiers)
16The soldiers led Jesus away into the palace (that is, the Praetorium) and called together the whole company of soldiers. 17They put a purple robe on him, then twisted together a crown of thorns and set it on him. 18And they began to call out to him, "Hail, king of the Jews!" 19Again and again they struck him on the head with a staff and spit on him. Falling on their knees, they paid homage to him. 20And when they had mocked him, they took off the purple robe and put his own clothes on him. Then they led him out to crucify him.

Anthem “My Salvation” J.S. Bach - Nelhybel

“The Darkness of Crucifixion”
Luke 23: 26 – 31 NIV (Road to Golgotha) Tom Housley
26As they led him away, they seized Simon from Cyrene, who was on his way in from the country, and put the cross on him and made him carry it behind Jesus. 27A large number of people followed him, including women who mourned and wailed for him. 28Jesus turned and said to them, "Daughters of Jerusalem, do not weep for me; weep for yourselves and for your children. 29For the time will come when you will say, 'Blessed are the barren women, the wombs that never bore and the breasts that never nursed!' 30Then " 'they will say to the mountains, "Fall on us!" and to the hills, "Cover us!" ' 31For if men do these things when the tree is green, what will happen when it is dry?"

Luke 23: 33 – 34 NIV (The Darkness of Crucifixion)
33When they came to the place called the Skull, there they crucified him, along with the criminals—one on his right, the other on his left. 34Jesus said, "Father, forgive them, for they do not know what they are doing." And they divided up his clothes by casting lots.

Hymn “There Is a Green Hill Far Away” insert

“The Darkness of Mockery”
Matthew 27: 38 – 44 NIV (Thieves on Cross) Ken Wark
38Two robbers were crucified with him, one on his right and one on his left. 39Those who passed by hurled insults at him, shaking their heads 40and saying, "You who are going to destroy the temple and build it in three days, save yourself! Come down from the cross, if you are the Son of God!"
41In the same way the chief priests, the teachers of the law and the elders mocked him. 42"He saved others," they said, "but he can't save himself! He's the King of Israel! Let him come down now from the cross, and we will believe in him. 43He trusts in God. Let God rescue him now if he wants him, for he said, 'I am the Son of God.' " 44In the same way the robbers who were crucified with him also heaped insults on him.

Hymn “Lamb of God” insert

“The Darkness of Death”
John 19: 29 – 30 NIV (It Is Finished) Steve Varys
29A jar of wine vinegar was there, so they soaked a sponge in it, put the sponge on a stalk of the hyssop plant, and lifted it to Jesus' lips. 30When he had received the drink, Jesus said, "It is finished." With that, he bowed his head and gave up his spirit.

Luke 23: 44 – 46 NIV (Commit My Spirit unto You)
44It was now about the sixth hour, and darkness came over the whole land until the ninth hour, 45for the sun stopped shining. And the curtain of the temple was torn in two. 46Jesus called out with a loud voice, "Father, into your hands I commit my spirit." When he had said this, he breathed his last.

Matthew 27: 51 – 54 NIV (Earth Shakes)
51At that moment the curtain of the temple was torn in two from top to bottom. The earth shook and the rocks split. 52The tombs broke open and the bodies of many holy people who had died were raised to life. 53They came out of the tombs, and after Jesus' resurrection they went into the holy city and appeared to many people.
54When the centurion and those with him who were guarding Jesus saw the earthquake and all that had happened, they were terrified, and exclaimed, "Surely he was the Son of God!"

Anthem “Here Lies God’s Son” David Lantz III

Postlude “Now the Day Is Over / Now Rest Beneath Night's Shadow”

Now rest beneath night's shadow the woodland, field and meadow.
The world in slumber lies.
But thou, my heart, awake thee; to prayer and song betake thee.
Let praise to thy Creator rise.

Tomorrow is Good Friday. We don’t have a Good Friday service at Faith Church because I encourage folks here to participate in this with other Christians elsewhere. A number of folks from Faith Church attend the Good Friday services from noon until 3:00pm at University Lutheran across the street from Chauncey Mall here in West Lafayette. I encourage you to be there or elsewhere to ponder the sacrifice of Christ for us on the cross.

Worship
…is the quickening of conscience by God’s holiness;
the nourishment of mind with His truth;
the purifying of imagination by His beauty;
the opening of the heart to His love;
the surrender of the will to His purpose;
and all of this gathered up in adoration—
the most selfless emotion of which our nature is capable, and therefore the chief remedy for that self-centeredness which is our original sin and the source of all actual sin.” - William Temple

Babysitting is available during worship for infants up to 2-1/2 years old in the room behind the balcony. Children ages 2-1/2 through 5 will be in the Pre-School Nursery in the Education Wing. School age children worship with their parents.
