The Order for the Worship of God

Faith Presbyterian Church 9:30 a.m., June 29, 2008
Let the first tone of the organ be a call to quiet meditation in which all may become aware of God’s presence, and lift up a prayer for yourself and for Faith Church.

Prelude Preludes on the Hymn Tunes "St. Crispin" & "Southwell"
(See music notes) by Healey Willan
Mark Johnson, organist

Welcome and Greeting

Invocation

Hymn # 244 God Himself Is with Us
(Gray Psalter Hymnal)

Psalter: Psalm 86: 1 - 10 NRSV (read responsively)
Dan Trinkle
1Incline your ear, O Lord, and answer me, for I am poor and needy.
2Preserve my life, for I am devoted to you; save your servant who trusts in you. You are my God;
3be gracious to me, O Lord, for to you do I cry all day long.
4Gladden the soul of your servant, for to you, O Lord, I lift up my soul.
5For you, O Lord, are good and forgiving, abounding in steadfast love to all who call on you.
6Give ear, O Lord, to my prayer; listen to my cry of supplication.
7In the day of my trouble I call on you, for you will answer me.
8There is none like you among the gods, O Lord, nor are there any works like yours.
9All the nations you have made shall come and bow down before you, O Lord, and shall glorify your name.
10For you are great and do wondrous things; you alone are God.

Prayer for Illumination Dan Trinkle

First Lesson: Matthew 5: 13 - 16 NRSV Dan Trinkle
13 ‘You are the salt of the earth; but if salt has lost its taste, how can its saltiness be restored? It is no longer good for anything, but is thrown out and trampled under foot.
14 ‘You are the light of the world. A city built on a hill cannot be hidden. 15No one after lighting a lamp puts it under the bushel basket, but on the lampstand, and it gives light to all in the house. 16In the same way, let your light shine before others, so that they may see your good works and give glory to your Father in heaven.

Lector: “This is the Word of God.”

Congregation: “Thanks be to God for His Word.”

Hymn # 209 Seek Ye First the Kingdom
(Gray Psalter Hymnal)

Second Lesson: Genesis 26: 1 - 13 NRSV
1Now there was a famine in the land, besides the former famine that had occurred in the days of Abraham. And Isaac went to Gerar, to King Abimelech of the Philistines. 2The Lord appeared to Isaac and said, ‘Do not go down to Egypt; settle in the land that I shall show you. 3Reside in this land as an alien, and I will be with you, and will bless you; for to you and to your descendants I will give all these lands, and I will fulfil the oath that I swore to your father Abraham. 4I will make your offspring as numerous as the stars of heaven, and will give to your offspring all these lands; and all the nations of the earth shall gain blessing for themselves through your offspring, 5because Abraham obeyed my voice and kept my charge, my commandments, my statutes, and my laws.’
6 So Isaac settled in Gerar. 7When the men of the place asked him about his wife, he said, ‘She is my sister’; for he was afraid to say, ‘My wife,’ thinking, ‘or else the men of the place might kill me for the sake of Rebekah, because she is attractive in appearance.’ 8When Isaac had been there a long time, King Abimelech of the Philistines looked out of a window and saw him fondling his wife Rebekah. 9So Abimelech called for Isaac, and said, ‘So she is your wife! Why then did you say, “She is my sister”?’ Isaac said to him, ‘Because I thought I might die because of her.’ 10Abimelech said, ‘What is this you have done to us? One of the people might easily have lain with your wife, and you would have brought guilt upon us.’ 11So Abimelech warned all the people, saying, ‘Whoever touches this man or his wife shall be put to death.’
12 Isaac sowed seed in that land, and in the same year reaped a hundredfold. The Lord blessed him, 13and the man became rich; he prospered more and more until he became very wealthy.

Worship
…is the quickening of conscience by God’s holiness;
the nourishment of mind with His truth;
the purifying of imagination by His beauty;
the opening of the heart to His love;
the surrender of the will to His purpose;
and all of this gathered up in adoration—
the most selfless emotion of which our nature is capable, and therefore the chief remedy for that self-centeredness which is our original sin and the source of all actual sin.” -William Temple

Music Notes

Tune "Southwell"
Not all the blood of beasts
On Jewish altars slain
Could give the guilty conscience peace
Or wash away the stain.

But Christ, the heav'nly Lamb,
Takes all our sins away;
A sacrifice of nobler name
And richer blood than they.

Tune "St. Crispin"
This hymn tune was written as an accompanyment
to "Just As I Am"

Postlude composer Maurice Greene was a British organist who lived from 1696-1755. His musical appointments included Organist of St. Paul's Cathedral, Organist and Composer to the Chapel Royal, Professor of Music at Cambridge University and Master of the King's Musick.

Lafayette Urban Ministry
Touching the future by helping children and families today.
Poverty is the greatest thief. More than depriving a neighbor of food or shelter or warmth, it steals away hope. While other thieves may take away the past, poverty steals the future and self-respect. LUM is in the business of restoring human dignity. Through voluntary efforts and contributions they give back the hope, the future, and the self-respect which all God’s people need and deserve. They provide financial assistance, after school care, shelter, food and support, a children’s summer camp, distribute clothing, mentor teenage girls, and have a hike for hunger. They make Thanksgiving and Christmas holidays brighter for hundreds of families. LUM’s resolution is to help God’s children in need.
