The Order for the Worship of God

Faith Presbyterian Church 9:30 a.m., July 20, 2008
Let the first tone of the organ be a call to quiet meditation in which all may become aware of God’s presence, and lift up a prayer for yourself and for Faith Church.

Prelude Andante Religioso (In the form of a canon) Eugene Gigout (France, 1844-1925)

Welcome and Greeting

Invocation

Hymn # 428 O Worship the King
(Gray Psalter Hymnal)

Psalter: Psalm 139: 1 - 10 NRSV (read responsively)
Mike Bergmann
1O Lord, you have searched me and known me.
2You know when I sit down and when I rise up; you discern my thoughts from far away.
3You search out my path and my lying down, and are acquainted with all my ways.
4Even before a word is on my tongue, O Lord, you know it completely.
5You hem me in, behind and before, and lay your hand upon me. 6Such knowledge is too wonderful for me; it is so high that I cannot attain it.
7Where can I go from your spirit? Or where can I flee from your presence?
8If I ascend to heaven, you are there; if I make my bed in Sheol, you are there.
9If I take the wings of the morning and settle at the farthest limits of the sea,
10even there your hand shall lead me, and your right hand shall hold me fast.

Prayer for Illumination Mike Bergmann

First Lesson: Romans 8: 18 - 24 NRSV Mike Bergmann
18 I consider that the sufferings of this present time are not worth comparing with the glory about to be revealed to us. 19For the creation waits with eager longing for the revealing of the children of God; 20for the creation was subjected to futility, not of its own will but by the will of the one who subjected it, in hope 21that the creation itself will be set free from its bondage to decay and will obtain the freedom of the glory of the children of God. 22We know that the whole creation has been groaning in labour pains until now; 23and not only the creation, but we ourselves, who have the first fruits of the Spirit, groan inwardly while we wait for adoption, the redemption of our bodies. 24For in hope we were saved. Now hope that is seen is not hope. For who hopes for what is seen?

Lector: “This is the Word of God.”

Congregation: “Thanks be to God for His Word.”

Children’s Sermon

Hymn # 36 O How I Love Jesus
(Green Supplemental Hymnal)

Second Lesson: Matthew 13: 24 – 30, 36 – 43 & 47 - 50 NRSV
24 He put before them another parable: ‘The kingdom of heaven may be compared to someone who sowed good seed in his field; 25but while everybody was asleep, an enemy came and sowed weeds among the wheat, and then went away. 26So when the plants came up and bore grain, then the weeds appeared as well. 27And the slaves of the householder came and said to him, “Master, did you not sow good seed in your field? Where, then, did these weeds come from?” 28He answered, “An enemy has done this.” The slaves said to him, “Then do you want us to go and gather them?” 29But he replied, “No; for in gathering the weeds you would uproot the wheat along with them. 30Let both of them grow together until the harvest; and at harvest time I will tell the reapers, Collect the weeds first and bind them in bundles to be burned, but gather the wheat into my barn.” ’
36 Then he left the crowds and went into the house. And his disciples approached him, saying, ‘Explain to us the parable of the weeds of the field.’ 37He answered, ‘The one who sows the good seed is the Son of Man; 38the field is the world, and the good seed are the children of the kingdom; the weeds are the children of the evil one, 39and the enemy who sowed them is the devil; the harvest is the end of the age, and the reapers are angels. 40Just as the weeds are collected and burned up with fire, so will it be at the end of the age. 41The Son of Man will send his angels, and they will collect out of his kingdom all causes of sin and all evildoers, 42and they will throw them into the furnace of fire, where there will be weeping and gnashing of teeth. 43Then the righteous will shine like the sun in the kingdom of their Father. Let anyone with ears listen!
47 ‘Again, the kingdom of heaven is like a net that was thrown into the sea and caught fish of every kind; 48when it was full, they drew it ashore, sat down, and put the good into baskets but threw out the bad. 49So it will be at the end of the age. The angels will come out and separate the evil from the righteous 50and throw them into the furnace of fire, where there will be weeping and gnashing of teeth.

Give thanks with a grateful heart,
Give thanks to the Holy One,
Give thanks because He’s given Jesus Christ, His Son. (repeat)

And now let the weak say, “I am strong!”
Let the poor say, “I am rich, because of what the Lord has done for us!”
Give thanks with a grateful heart,
Give thanks to the Holy One,
Give thanks because He’s given Jesus Christ, His Son.
Give thanks. Give thanks. ∆

Worship
…is the quickening of conscience by God’s holiness;
the nourishment of mind with His truth;
the purifying of imagination by His beauty;
the opening of the heart to His love;
the surrender of the will to His purpose;
and all of this gathered up in adoration—
the most selfless emotion of which our nature is capable, and therefore the chief remedy for that self-centeredness which is our original sin and the source of all actual sin.” -William Temple

Announcements

Greeters this morning are Don & Carol Gentry

The flowers this morning are given in loving memory of Gertrude Dahlbom Honig by the Honig and Vamos families.

The Sunday Night Bible study will hold its annual movie and carry-in supper night on Sunday, July 20, 6pm at the Moore’s. The feature film celebrates our study of Judges: Cecil B. DeMille’s Sampson and Delilah (1949), with Hedy Lamarr and Victor Mature. The camp appeal of this engagingly awful movie is enhanced by the Taiwanese DVD with odd colors and Chinese subtitles. Call Nancy Moore (583-4583) for information.

For those wishing a visit at any time by Pastor Horner please be sure you let Stephanie know you are interested. Pastor Horner’s office hours are Monday – Thursday 9:00am – 1:00 pm, or by appointment.

Hope Clinic
Hope Clinic (Clinica Benefactora “La Esperanza”) and the Priscila Presbyterian Bible School were founded in the 1960s by a group of presbyterian doctors, ministers and a missionary couple, Eula and Ernest Mathews. Our interest in these organizations started in the 1970s when a group of people from Faith Presbyterian Church went to the Yucatan to help build a small church there.
The purpose of Hope Clinic is to provide reasonably priced medical care for the poor residents of Yucatan villages. The goals of the clinic are to maintain a Christian atmosphere in the clinic and to deliver its services for the lowest possible prices.

Priscila Bible School
Priscila Presbyterian Bible School was established to give residential training to girls by providing a three year course in basic and Christian education. This enables them to go back to their own communities and teach there. It has also established a Department of Music, teaching both vocal and instrumental music, which is open to non-boarding male and female students.
