The Order for the Worship of God

Faith Presbyterian Church 9:30 a.m., August 17, 2008
Let the first tone of the organ be a call to quiet meditation in which all may become aware of God’s presence, and lift up a prayer for yourself and for Faith Church.

Welcome and Greeting

Invocation

Hymn # 412 Jesus Shall Reign

Psalter: Psalm 135: 5 - 14 NRSV (read responsively)
Jurgen Honig
5For I know that the Lord is great; our Lord is above all gods.
6Whatever the Lord pleases he does, in heaven and on earth, in the seas and all deeps.
7He it is who makes the clouds rise at the end of the earth; he makes lightnings for the rain and brings out the wind from his storehouses.
8He it was who struck down the firstborn of Egypt, both human beings and animals;
9he sent signs and wonders into your midst, O Egypt, against Pharaoh and all his servants.
10He struck down many nations and killed mighty kings—
11Sihon, king of the Amorites, and Og, king of Bashan, and all the kingdoms of Canaan—
12and gave their land as a heritage, a heritage to his people Israel.
13Your name, O Lord, endures for ever, your renown, O Lord, throughout all ages.
14For the Lord will vindicate his people, and have compassion on his servants.

Prayer for Illumination Jurgen Honig

First Lesson: Revelation 21: 1 - 8 NRSV Jurgen Honig
1Then I saw a new heaven and a new earth; for the first heaven and the first earth had passed away, and the sea was no more. 2And I saw the holy city, the new Jerusalem, coming down out of heaven from God, prepared as a bride adorned for her husband. 3And I heard a loud voice from the throne saying, ‘See, the home of God is among mortals. He will dwell with them; they will be his peoples, and God himself will be with them; 4he will wipe every tear from their eyes. Death will be no more; mourning and crying and pain will be no more, for the first things have passed away.’
5And the one who was seated on the throne said, ‘See, I am making all things new.’ Also he said, ‘Write this, for these words are trustworthy and true.’ 6Then he said to me, ‘It is done! I am the Alpha and the Omega, the beginning and the end. To the thirsty I will give water as a gift from the spring of the water of life. 7Those who conquer will inherit these things, and I will be their God and they will be my children. 8But as for the cowardly, the faithless, the polluted, the murderers, the fornicators, the sorcerers, the idolaters, and all liars, their place will be in the lake that burns with fire and sulphur, which is the second death.’

Lector: “This is the Word of God.”

Congregation: “Thanks be to God for His Word.”

Children’s Sermon

Hymn # 452 He Leadeth Me

Second Lesson: Genesis 37: 17 – 20, 26 – 28, 45: 1 - 8 NRSV
17The man said, ‘They have gone away, for I heard them say, “Let us go to Dothan.” ’ So Joseph went after his brothers, and found them at Dothan. 18They saw him from a distance, and before he came near to them, they conspired to kill him. 19They said to one another, ‘Here comes this dreamer. 20Come now, let us kill him and throw him into one of the pits; then we shall say that a wild animal has devoured him, and we shall see what will become of his dreams.’
26Then Judah said to his brothers, ‘What profit is there if we kill our brother and conceal his blood? 27Come, let us sell him to the Ishmaelites, and not lay our hands on him, for he is our brother, our own flesh.’ And his brothers agreed. 28When some Midianite traders passed by, they drew Joseph up, lifting him out of the pit, and sold him to the Ishmaelites for twenty pieces of silver. And they took Joseph to Egypt.
1Then Joseph could no longer control himself before all those who stood by him, and he cried out, ‘Send everyone away from me.’ So no one stayed with him when Joseph made himself known to his brothers. 2And he wept so loudly that the Egyptians heard it, and the household of Pharaoh heard it. 3Joseph said to his brothers, ‘I am Joseph. Is my father still alive?’ But his brothers could not answer him, so dismayed were they at his presence.
4Then Joseph said to his brothers, ‘Come closer to me.’ And they came closer. He said, ‘I am your brother Joseph, whom you sold into Egypt. 5And now do not be distressed, or angry with yourselves, because you sold me here; for God sent me before you to preserve life. 6For the famine has been in the land these two years; and there are five more years in which there will be neither ploughing nor harvest. 7God sent me before you to preserve for you a remnant on earth, and to keep alive for you many survivors. 8So it was not you who sent me here, but God; he has made me a father to Pharaoh, and lord of all his house and ruler over all the land of Egypt.

Worship
…is the quickening of conscience by God’s holiness;
the nourishment of mind with His truth;
the purifying of imagination by His beauty;
the opening of the heart to His love;
the surrender of the will to His purpose;
and all of this gathered up in adoration—
the most selfless emotion of which our nature is capable, and therefore the chief remedy for that self-centeredness which is our original sin and the source of all actual sin.” -William Temple

Welcome
To all who are weary and seek rest; to all who mourn and long for comfort; to all who struggle and desire victory; to all who sin and need a Savior; to all who are idle and look for service; to all who are strangers and want fellowship; to all who hunger and thirst after righteousness; and to whosoever will come--this church opens wide her doors and offers her welcome in the name of Jesus Christ her Lord.
Guests please sign our guest book and join us in the Fellowship Hall after worship.
Babysitting is available during worship for infants up to
2-1/2 years old in the room behind the balcony. Children ages 2-1/2 through 5 will be in the Pre-School Nursery in the Education Wing. School age children worship with their parents.

* The Sunday Evening Bible Study will resume on August 24 at the Moore’s. We meet from 6:30pm – 8:00pm for light refreshments, sharing and prayer, and Bible study. We will begin the fall semester by looking at the careers of Elijah and his successor Elisha, from I Kings 17: to II Kings 13. These major characters of the 9th century BC are more removed from modern sensibility than the great Old Testament figures of Abraham, Moses, and David. We will try to understand them and their time. Call Nancy Moore for more information, 583-4583.

* Pastor David Horner Installation Service - A Commission representing Wabash Valley Presbytery will install Pastor Horner as our Pastor on Sunday, September 7th at 4:00 in the afternoon. We hope you will be present to celebrate this event with us. A reception will follow.

Beginning Greek will continue with Jurgen Honing
The Library Class engages The Battle of Beginnings - The Library Class (formerly the so-called young adult class) will be striving to sort out the implications for our faith of creation, evolution, and the Biblical account. Our primary resources will be the Bible itself and the book "The Battle of Beginnings" by Del Ratzsch. The class will meet, as the name suggests, in the library. The teacher is Mark Johnson.

* New Bible Study at the Horners’ - This coming Thursday Evening at 7:00 we will begin our Midweek Bible Study at the Pastor’s house. We will be studying the Book of Acts. We hope to see you there. The address is 2125 Marconi Court (Lindberg Village – near the new library branch). If you get lost, call 807-7000.

COOKIES!!! WE NEED COOKIES!!!
Faith Church will be handing out fliers about our church at Purdue Boiler Gold Rush on August 19th. We want to attach these fliers to a small bag of homemade cookies to emphasize the "hominess" and traditional, welcoming atmosphere we exude here at Faith. That's where you come in. We need as many people as possible to bake as many home-made cookies as possible for this event. Kris Stith and/or Lonni Kucik will have sign-up sheets after church today. You can bring the cookies on Monday, August 18th.
We could use a few volunteers to help put these thousands of cookies in bags and attach fliers to them on the18th and even to pass them out on the 19th if you are willing. See Kris and/or Lonni about that too. Thank You for your support!
