Pastor's Pen

I remember a story about Theodore (Teddy) Roosevelt. He was in the Badlands of North Dakota hunting Buffalo. He hadn’t arrived until the end of August and he missed a shot at a buffalo shortly after his arrival. Autumn and Winter arrive early in the badlands, and as Teddy’s search for a Buffalo continued, colder and wetter weather arrived. His guide wanted to return to the base, but Teddy was determined to shoot a buffalo even if it took all Fall and Winter. One morning the guide awakened to find Teddy still sleeping in a puddle of partially frozen water. He hoped that this might dampen Teddy’s spirits and bring about the end of their expedition. He was wrong. As he watched, Teddy awakened, looked around, got up from his wet resting place, smiled that famous Roosevelt smile and said “By Godfrey, but this is fun!”

I want you to know that Diane and I are having a great time being your Pastor and Pastor’s wife. Yes the Finance Committee and I are dealing with the decreased income we have received this past year and will soon be preparing a budget to deal with our financial realities. The Session and I are working out how we will respond to the denominational issues precipitated by the recent General Assembly. There are and always will be mini and full-blown crises in any church and ministry. But in the midst of them all, I want you to know that I really love being the pastor of Faith church. I am working hard, but “By Godfrey, …this is fun!”

I am nearly finished visiting with the Session members and the Deacons and their families. During this next month I should begin to visit with some of the rest of you. I look forward to visiting each of you.

Diane is having a challenging and fun time beginning her duties as the School Nurse at Tecumseh Middle School.

I have started teaching the Sunday School class on the Westminster Confession of Faith. We have had a good attendance the first two weeks but there is still plenty of room for you if you have not yet joined us.

The Bible Study of Acts has also started. We meet each Thursday at 7:00 P.M. at our home at 2125 Marconi Court in West Lafayette. You are invited to join us on Thursday evenings

Our Pastor Emeritus has returned from his studies in Israel and he will be participating in our Installation Service on September 7th at 4:00 in the afternoon. In case you didn’t know or hadn’t guessed, there will be a reception in the Fellowship Hall following the Installation Service. I hope you will be able to join us in the Installation Service and the Reception.

As I prepare this letter, it is the first day of classes at Purdue. Please know that I am praying for all of you who work there and for all of your students. I am praying for a successful, peaceful and joyful year for all of you.

Your Pastor,

Dave Horner

Our primary resources will be the Bible itself and the book "The Battle of Beginnings" by Del Ratzsch. The class will meet, as the name suggests, in the library. The teacher is Mark Johnson.

Cheerful Givers

Our Deacons and Trinity Mission wish to thank all of our great cookie bakers at Faith Presbyterian Church. It was amazing to see how many of you made the effort to spread good cheer among the people who attended the Taste & See Festival. Our granddaughter, a new P.U. freshman, helped by bagging well over a hundred bags of cookies at our house. Hannis Thompson was on hand to help me set up the tent at 9:00 a.m., and to unload the coolers of bottled water, school supplies, table & chairs, etc. The families located around Trinity Mission started coming in full force at 10:00 a.m. Donna Lofgren, Dorothy Bethel, Barbara Knox, Ron Smith, and Tom VanHorn helped to hand out the packages of school supplies, bagged cookies, and bottled water. And as you might expect John Miller was a big hit with the younger ones, creating animals, wearable crowns, etc. from balloons. The adults wanted especially to pick up the school supplies for their children or grandchildren and, indeed, I had to make a run to Walmart to pick up additional school supplies that were eagerly taken by the late comers at the Festival. I believe at least 12 churches participated in the Festival providing cooked food, yard games, face painting, Christian Rock bands, and health nurses who were taking blood pressure of those who wanted that service. Thank you for helping to make this a successful Festival for Trinity Mission.

Polly Tyler, Deacon

Faith Church Choir

An Evening of Entertainment

Date: Wednesday, September 3rd
Time: 6:30 pm

We look forward to seeing you!!

Cake, punch, and balloons will be provided

Ask and You Shall Receive...

And boy did we receive - COOKIES! The bakers of Faith Church really came through last week with cookie donations for the Evangelism Committee’s presence at Boiler Gold Rush at Purdue Tuesday, August 19.

Pastor Horner, Kris Stith and Lonni Kucik handed out approximately 950 “cookie bags” with a Faith Presbyterian Church flyer attached to freshman attending the Boiler Gold Rush Activities Fair. You can’t imagine the number of smiles and “thank you’s” we received for the homemade goody bags. We hope to see some young new faces in the coming weeks responding to our invitation to visit. As always, please provide a sincere Faith Church welcome to any newcomers – and help our Evangelism committee identify first time visitors so we may pass along a Welcome Bag with more cookies!

Our Boiler Gold Rush flyer offered transportation from campus to Church on Sunday mornings; and provided phone numbers to call to request a ride. If you would be willing to help provide transportation on Sunday mornings – please contact Dave Stith or Lonni Kucik.

We hope this outreach to Purdue students will encourage many to visit us. If there is student interest, we’d like to start a College Bible Study/Dinner one evening. We welcome your input and seek volunteers interested in helping with possible College-aged activities.

Thank you again for your generosity and response to our need. And a special thanks to Kathy Trinkle and Ann Freeman for helping bag all those cookies!
The Evangelism Committee
(Dave and Kris Stith, Donna Lofgren,
Marcella Verplank and Lonni Kucik)

Thank You

A special thank you to the following women who volunteered to man(woman?) the Church Women United food pantry at Hanna Community Center last week. They are Barbara Knox, Kathy Bowker, Kathleen Kirsch, Carol Graefnitz, Grieke Toebes, Helen Hard and myself. Some fresh produce as well as canned staples were distributed.

Did You Know????

Sunday school classes are in session again. There's a little bit of everything for adults, so why not expand your horizon and spend an hour after church in a time of learning and fellowship?

The New Testament Greek class would love to have you join us – we'll help with the hard words and teach you all the short-cuts (of which, unfortunately, there are none, but the effort is good for your brain synapses).

Pastor Horner is teaching a class on the Westminster Confession.

Mark Johnson leads The Library Class (young adults) in studying The Battle of Beginnings.

The Sunday Evening Bible Study meets at the Moore's from 6:30pm to 8:30pm and will be studying the careers of Elijah and his successor Elisha.

Tuesday Morning Bible Study meets at 9:30am at the church and is studying First and Second Timothy, and Titus.

Last but not least, Midweek Bible Study meets at the Horner's on Thursday evenings at 7:00pm and will be studying the Book of Acts.

A commission representing Wabash Valley Presbytery will install Pastor Horner as our Pastor on Sunday, September 7 at 4:00 pm with a reception to follow. Please come and celebrate this event with us.

Prayers and cards are needed for Janis Matouk who is now staying with her daughter. Her address is: 7105 W. Greenview Drive, Battle Ground, IN 47920.

Morgan Myers and his family also need prayers and cards. He is in a long-term health facility in Wisconsin and Dorothy is staying with their daughter: 30260 State Highway 137, Ashland, WI 54806.

A call-out for Java Heroes is announced – if you can make coffee (by following instructions on the wall in the kitchen), please sign up for a Sunday. Yes, this means you … are needed.

N. Dunn
