The Order for the Worship of God
Faith Presbyterian Church 9:30 a.m., October 19, 2008
Let the first tone of the organ be a call to quiet meditation in which all may become aware of God’s presence, and lift up a prayer for yourself and for Faith Church.

Hymn # 501 Oh, For a Thousand Tongues to Sing
vs. 1 – 4 & 7
Psalter: Psalm 147: 1 - 11 NRSV (read responsively)
Dan Trinkle
1Praise the Lord! How good it is to sing praises to our God; for he is gracious, and a song of praise is fitting.
2The Lord builds up Jerusalem; he gathers the outcasts of Israel.
3He heals the brokenhearted, and binds up their wounds.
4He determines the number of the stars; he gives to all of them their names.
5Great is our Lord, and abundant in power; his understanding is beyond measure.
6The Lord lifts up the downtrodden; he casts the wicked to the ground.
7Sing to the Lord with thanksgiving; make melody to our God on the lyre.
8He covers the heavens with clouds, prepares rain for the earth, makes grass grow on the hills.
9He gives to the animals their food, and to the young ravens when they cry.
10His delight is not in the strength of the horse, nor his pleasure in the speed of a runner;
11but the Lord takes pleasure in those who fear him, in those who hope in his steadfast love.
Prayer for Illumination Dan Trinkle
First Lesson: Exodus 33: 18 – 23, 40: 34 - 38 NRSV
Dan Trinkle
18Moses said, “Show me your glory, I pray.” 19And he said, “I will make all my goodness pass before you, and will proclaim before you the name, ‘The Lord’; and I will be gracious to whom I will be gracious, and will show mercy on whom I will show mercy. 20But,” he said, “you cannot see my face; for no one shall see me and live.” 21And the Lord continued, “See, there is a place by me where you shall stand on the rock; 22and while my glory passes by I will put you in a cleft of the rock, and I will cover you with my hand until I have passed by; 23then I will take away my hand, and you shall see my back; but my face shall not be seen.”
34Then the cloud covered the tent of meeting, and the glory of the Lord filled the tabernacle. 35Moses was not able to enter the tent of meeting because the cloud settled upon it, and the glory of the Lord filled the tabernacle. 36Whenever the cloud was taken up from the tabernacle, the Israelites would set out on each stage of their journey; 37but if the cloud was not taken up, then they did not set out until the day that it was taken up. 38For the cloud of the Lord was on the tabernacle by day, and fire was in the cloud by night, before the eyes of all the house of Israel at each stage of their journey.
Lector: “This is the Word of God.”
Congregation: “Thanks be to God for His Word.”

Children’s Sermon
Hymn # 556 Great Is Thy Faithfulness
Second Lesson: John 1: 1 – 2 & 14 - 18 NRSV
1In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God, and the Word was God. 2He was in the beginning with God.
14And the Word became flesh and lived among us, and we have seen his glory, the glory as of a father’s only son, full of grace and truth.
15(John testified to him and cried out, “This was he of whom I said, ‘He who comes after me ranks ahead of me because he was before me.’”) 16From his fullness we have all received, grace upon grace. 17The law indeed was given through Moses; grace and truth came through Jesus Christ. 18No one has ever seen God. It is God the only Son, who is close to the Father’s heart, who has made him known.
Sermon “The Glory of God” Pastor Horner

Offertory All Glory Be To God On High
Gray Hymnbook p. 247
Jean Langlais (France, 1907-1991)
The unusual French prelude played for today's offertory is based on the same hymn tune as the offertory played last week by Mark.
The tune is heard in canon (the tune followed closely by itself).
The right hand begins the tune, followed three beats later by the same tune played in the pedal division.
Response
Lead me, Lord, lead me in Thy righteousness;
Make Thy way plain before my face.
For it is Thou, Lord,
Thou, Lord, only that makest me dwell in safety.

Buxtehude is considered to be the foremost composer and organist during the flowering of the baroque church music in the generation before Bach. This piece is typical of its genre.

Worship
…is the quickening of conscience by God’s holiness;
the nourishment of mind with His truth;
the purifying of imagination by His beauty;
the opening of the heart to His love;
the surrender of the will to His purpose;
and all of this gathered up in adoration—
the most selfless emotion of which our nature is capable, and therefore the chief remedy for that self-centeredness which is our original sin and the source of all actual sin.” -William Temple
