Pastor's Pen
I am wondering if Thanksgiving will be canceled this year. With all of the negative reporting regarding our economy and the negative campaigning of those running for office, I have started to wonder if any of us have anything for which to be thankful. And, since our National Holiday of Thanksgiving has to be declared by our President and our current President is suffering from one of the lowest approval ratings on record, you have to wonder if he has anything for which he is thankful or if he will even bother to make the declaration.
The previous paragraph was written partially in jest in the hope that by reading it you will have already begun to think of the many reasons we still have to set apart a day to thank God for all we have received from His generosity. If our economy would continue to decline until the stocks in the stock market are all but valueless and heating prices would continue to rise to the point that we could only heat one room of our houses, even then most of us would have a higher standard of living than most people in this world. And even then we would still have much for which to be thankful.
Our standard of living is not all or even the greatest thing for which we have to be grateful to God. Our God has given us eternal life in Jesus the Christ. Our God has given to us each other.
I really enjoy watching you greet and welcome each other prior to the invocation in our Worship Service. Some of you travel a major portion of our sanctuary during those few moments and most of you seem to be really glad to see each other. It is really wonderful to be a part of a Community of Christ in which people really care for each other.
So this Thanksgiving I will continue to be thankful to God for the many ways in which He has been generous to me. And this year, I am grateful for you and for the privilege of serving God by being your Pastor.
I am continuing to visit the members and “associates” of Faith Church. I thank those of you who have already met with me and I look forward to getting to know the rest of you.
Your Pastor,
Dave Horner

Clerk's Corner
At its October 7, 2008 meeting the Session attended to a number of routine items and to the following:
They were informed by Treasurer Carol Gentry that the budget for 2009 will be very tight because pledging and financial receipts are well behind those of the current and of prior years. However, all fiscal obligations will be covered. The Finance and Budget Committee will present information on the budgetary figures to the Congregation at the
Annual Congregational Meeting on November 23, 2008, at which time approval will be sought for the financial compensation package for Pastor Horner.
They were informed that the church record had been approved with commendation at the Records and Register review on October 4, 2008, at Trinity Church, West Lebanon, Indiana.
They approved setting up membership classes in November 2008 for those desiring to join the Congregation.
They nominated Elder Hannis Thompson to be a Commissioner at the upcoming Presbytery meeting on November 11, 2008.
They approved the request by Boy Scout Troop 338 to engage in the sale of Christmas items at Church.
They set November 4, 2008 as the date of the next Session meeting.

Building and Grounds Committee News
The B & G committee appreciates the participation of many members on fall clean up day. We are now seeking additional people who can manage our sound systems, operate our riding lawn mower, and trim the grounds. Training for all three jobs is provided as needed, and any level of participation is appreciated. Contact Dave McKinnis at 463-4963 to get started.
Have you noticed the AED, Automated External Defibrillator?
The AED can be a life saving device when someone has collapsed because of a heart attack. The AED was installed several months ago in the narthex in a cabinet above the fire extinguisher. This central location was selected to make sure that the devise is readily available to anyone in any part of the building.
This AED was supplied to us for free through St. Elizabeth’s Revive and Survive Program. You can learn more about this from their web site: http://www.ste.org/DesktopDefault.aspx?tabid=1069&tabindex=
So the next time you come into the narthex please look for the AED above the fire extinguisher. It’s important that we all know where the device is in case it is needed. You might notice a key on the cabinet. The cabinet is not locked. The key is to deactivate an alarm which will sound when the cabinet is opened. The key allows you to turn off this alarm when there is no emergency.
Are you interested in learning how to use this device? The more people who are familiar with the AED the better the chance that we can help someone having a heart attack. They have designed the AED to be quite dummy proof with simple diagrams and voice prompts, so don’t be concerned that you need special abilities. AED training is given in the CPR classes available at St. Elizabeth. If you are interested in this training I have several free coupons available. Just let me know and I will get one to you.
Are you interested in knowing more about the AED but do not want to take the CPR class? You’re in luck, there are training videos that will familiarize you with the AED. One training video I have found on the web was designed for high school students in Hawaii: http://www.hawaii.edu/medicine/pediatrics/aed/aed.html
This video does a nice job in explaining how the AED works and why. You can watch it at your convenience on your own computer, or we can arrange to show it at Faith some Sunday. Let me know if you would like this option.
Thanks for reading, Jane Stewart
“What is an Automated External Defibrillator?
An AED is a small, portable device that analyzes the heart's rhythm and prompts the user to deliver a defibrillation shock if it determines one is needed. Once turned on, the AED guides the user through each step of the defibrillation process by providing voice and/or visual prompts. Time to defibrillation, the most critical factor in sudden cardiac arrest (SCA) survival, can be reduced if an AED is "on-site" and can be brought to the victim quickly. This is one of the reasons that survival rates improve in communities with active AED programs. Remember, every minute that passes before defibrillation reduces survival rates by 7 to10 percent.”
Did You Know????
Of course, the most notable item that you might not know about, dear reader, was the Third Annual Mitford Tea which was enjoyed by a bevy of beautiful, discerning women on Sunday afternoon, October 5 at Faith Church.
Those ladies attending were astounded to see three — yes, three! — of Esther's Marmalade Cake. Although they were definitely too beautiful to cut, somehow the ladies forced themselves to partake of this unusual and extremely rich confection. (It is said some ladies had to taste each cake as there were three different bakers: Barbara Knox, Nancy Moore and Peggy Housley.)
The tables were decorated in different themes, and as usual, each one was quite artfully and tastefully presented. (Bells, quilt patterns, tea cozies, cats, oceans, heirloom keepsakes, and Great Britain were represented. Tell me if I forgot one.) There were door prizes and singing; Nancy Moore prepared a meditation, and some notable hats were a topic of conversation.
Donations were brought for our mini-mission for the Baby Corner of the Tippecanoe Community Health Clinic. Faith Presbyterian Church Women received a letter of thanks from the clinic which is now in its 20th year of providing high quality medical and dental care services to the ever-growing number of men, women and children in Tippecanoe and surrounding counties.
Attendance and enjoyment seem to grow with each Tea, and one wonders what will happen at the next one.
Ladies of the church are planning a baby (girl) shower for Dewi Sidharta on Saturday, November 15, 9:30-11:00 am. (Location to be announced later.) Dewi already has a crib and some infant clothing. For ideas, talk with Grieka or this correspondent.
A good time was had by all on Sunday, October 19 when members and friends carried in sandwiches (with the admonition that one could not eat one's own sandwiches!). Drinks and four different kinds of soup were available for a light lunch after Sunday school. There were enough cookies for everyone (someone at your correspondent's table ate more than three and that person's initials are T.G.) and light entertainment followed. As usual, the fellowship was grand!
Not to put too fine a point on it, but Mayfawny Bergmann and Ace Tyler wowed us all with fine piano playing and exquisite vocals. Mrs. David Horner (Diane) our pastor's new wife (or is it the new pastor's wife?) tangled her tongue with the familiar story of Findecella and her gairy fodmother. It was almost too much for this correspondent to follow! But it was followed, and admirably, too by a women's trio composed of Chris Stith, Carol Goodrich and Grieke Toebes singing an appropriate ditty, «The Bare Necessities.» Actually, «The Bare Necessities of Life,» I should add.
And finally, our very own Mayfawny will be portraying Anne in the West Lafayette High School production of «Anne of Green Gables.» Olivia Lockwood is also a crew member. There will be two play dates: November 7 at 7 pm and November 8 at 3 pm. Tickets will be available soon; check with Mayfawny.
Thank you, Java Heroes!
