The Order for the Worship of God
Faith Presbyterian Church 9:30 a.m., November 23, 2008
Let the first tone of the organ be a call to quiet meditation in which all may become aware of God’s presence, and lift up a prayer for yourself and for Faith Church.

Hymn # 237 We Praise You, O God
(Gray Psalter Hymnal)
Psalter: Psalm 8 NRSV (read responsively) Bob Verplank
1O Lord, our Sovereign, how majestic is your name in all the earth! You have set your glory above the heavens.
2Out of the mouths of babes and infants you have founded a bulwark because of your foes, to silence the enemy and the avenger.
3When I look at your heavens, the work of your fingers, the moon and the stars that you have established;
4what are human beings that you are mindful of them, mortals that you care for them?
5Yet you have made them a little lower than God, and crowned them with glory and honor.
6You have given them dominion over the works of your hands; you have put all things under their feet,
7all sheep and oxen, and also the beasts of the field,
8the birds of the air, and the fish of the sea, whatever passes along the paths of the seas.
9O Lord, our Sovereign, how majestic is your name in all the earth!
Prayer for Illumination Bob Verplank
First Lesson: Matthew 26: 6 - 13 NRSV Bob Verplank
6Now while Jesus was at Bethany in the house of Simon the leper, 7a woman came to him with an alabaster jar of very costly ointment, and she poured it on his head as he sat at the table. 8But when the disciples saw it, they were angry and said, “Why this waste? 9For this ointment could have been sold for a large sum, and the money given to the poor.” 10But Jesus, aware of this, said to them, “Why do you trouble the woman? She has performed a good service for me. 11For you always have the poor with you, but you will not always have me. 12By pouring this ointment on my body she has prepared me for burial. 13Truly I tell you, wherever this good news is proclaimed in the whole world, what she has done will be told in remembrance of her.”
Lector: “This is the Word of God.”
Congregation: “Thanks be to God for His Word.”
Anthem Thanks to God for My Redeemer John Hultman
Children’s Sermon
Hymn # 89 Give Thanks
(Green Supplemental Hymnal)
Second Lesson: Joshua 24: 1 - 15 NRSV
1Then Joshua gathered all the tribes of Israel to Shechem, and summoned the elders, the heads, the judges, and the officers of Israel; and they presented themselves before God. 2And Joshua said to all the people, “Thus says the Lord, the God of Israel: Long ago your ancestors—Terah and his sons Abraham and Nahor—lived beyond the Euphrates and served other gods. 3Then I took your father Abraham from beyond the River and led him through all the land of Canaan and made his offspring many. I gave him Isaac; 4and to Isaac I gave Jacob and Esau. I gave Esau the hill country of Seir to possess, but Jacob and his children went down to Egypt. 5Then I sent Moses and Aaron, and I plagued Egypt with what I did in its midst; and afterwards I brought you out. 6When I brought your ancestors out of Egypt, you came to the sea; and the Egyptians pursued your ancestors with chariots and horsemen to the Red Sea. 7When they cried out to the Lord, he put darkness between you and the Egyptians, and made the sea come upon them and cover them; and your eyes saw what I did to Egypt. Afterwards you lived in the wilderness a long time. 8Then I brought you to the land of the Amorites, who lived on the other side of the Jordan; they fought with you, and I handed them over to you, and you took possession of their land, and I destroyed them before you. 9Then King Balak son of Zippor of Moab, set out to fight against Israel. He sent and invited Balaam son of Beor to curse you, 10but I would not listen to Balaam; therefore he blessed you; so I rescued you out of his hand. 11When you went over the Jordan and came to Jericho, the citizens of Jericho fought against you, and also the Amorites, the Perizzites, the Canaanites, the Hittites, the Girgashites, the Hivites, and the Jebusites; and I handed them over to you. 12I sent the hornet ahead of you, which drove out before you the two kings of the Amorites; it was not by your sword or by your bow. 13I gave you a land on which you had not labored, and towns that you had not built, and you live in them; you eat the fruit of vineyards and olive groves that you did not plant. 14“Now therefore revere the Lord, and serve him in sincerity and in faithfulness; put away the gods that your ancestors served beyond the River and in Egypt, and serve the Lord.
15Now if you are unwilling to serve the Lord, choose this day whom you will serve, whether the gods your ancestors served in the region beyond the River or the gods of the Amorites in whose land you are living; but as for me and my household, we will serve the Lord.”

Offertory My Tribute Andrae' Crouch
How can I say thanks for the things You have done for me?
Things so undeserved, yet You gave to prove your love for me;
The voices of a million angels could not express my gratitude.
All that I am, and ever hope to be, I owe it all to Thee.
To God be the glory, to God be the glory,
To God be the glory for the things He has done.
With His blood He has saved me;
With His power He has raised me;
To God be the glory for the things He has done.

Worship
…is the quickening of conscience by God’s holiness;
the nourishment of mind with His truth;
the purifying of imagination by His beauty;
the opening of the heart to His love;
the surrender of the will to His purpose;
and all of this gathered up in adoration—
the most selfless emotion of which our nature is capable, and therefore the chief remedy for that self-centeredness which is our original sin and the source of all actual sin.” -William Temple

Worship at Faith Church Thanksgiving Eve
On Wednesday, November 26 at 7:00pm we will gather as families to give thanks to God for His many blessings. It will be a service of sharing in different ways—by speaking about God’s goodness to us, by bringing food or money gifts for the Food Pantry to create a cornucopia in front of the sanctuary, and by singing our praises to Him. Bring your whole family, including the littlest ones, and ask your neighbors to join you.
Join us in Memorial Fellowship Hall after the service for a time of fellowship.
Jubilee Christmas
Jubilee Christmas is coming! We will be hosting 18 families this year. The parents will be invited to select gifts for their children, so they can be the "heroes" on Christmas morning. We will be celebrating Jubilee Christmas on Saturday December 13 at 10 a.m. Breakfast will be served at 9:00 for guests and hosts, and all helpers are invited.
We need a lot of help to make this a special day for our guests. Here's how you can help:
1. Pray. That it will be a day filled with love and blessings.
2. Toys. There's a Christmas tree in the fellowship hall with tags representing gifts ($25-30). There's also a bowl with tags for stocking stuffers ($1-5). If the toy needs batteries, please include 2 sets. Attach the tag to the unwrapped gift and place it in the box in the fellowship hall no later than Sunday December 7.
3. Gift wrap and bows.
4. Cookies and Refreshments*.
5. Family Gifts*. Things like laundry detergent and paper products.
6. Card Tables*.
7. Volunteers*.
a. Each family needs a host.
b. Setup, cleanup, and general help.
8. Money. This helps us to pay for the hams and gift certificates provided by LUM, a hat and mittens for each child, and a gift for each family, as well as purchase any last-minute toys or supplies. Place your gift in the morning offering or in the donations box in the fellowship hall.
*Signup sheets for these are in the fellowship hall.
Through Jubilee Christmas, we not only serve others in the community, but also grow as a community of believers in the Lord. We appreciate your help - Thanks!
