The Order for the Worship of God
Faith Presbyterian Church 9:30 a.m., November 30, 2008
Let the first tone of the organ be a call to quiet meditation in which all may become aware of God’s presence, and lift up a prayer for yourself and for Faith Church.
Prelude O Thou of God the Father, Choral Prelude
by J.S. Bach
Welcome and Greeting
Lighting of the Candle - We Wait in Hope Joel Raney
Choral Prelude – the Choir and Bell Choir
Litany (read responsively) David McKinnis
Advent is a time to wait.
We wait in hope for the Lord; he is our help and our
shield.
During Advent we wait for light in the darkness.
We wait in hope for the Lord; he is our help and our
shield.
During Advent we wait for freedom from captivity.
We wait in hope for the Lord; he is our help and our
shield.
During Advent we wait for comfort in sorrow.
We wait in hope for the Lord; he is our help and our
shield.
During Advent we wait for power in weakness.
We wait in hope for the Lord; he is our help and our
shield.
Lighting of the Candles The Kain Family, candle lighters
This morning we light the first candle. The first candle reminds us that, as we wait upon the Lord, God’s light never ceases to shine, God’s will never ceases to unfold, and God’s grace never ceases to be felt. As we begin the journey of Advent, may we learn to wait upon the Lord with hopeful expectation by celebrating all God has done and anticipating gall he will do.
Refrain – the Choir
Prayer
God in heaven, as we begin this season of Advent, we pray that you will teach us to wait with patience, endurance, and trust. Holding to the eternal promises revealed to us through the power of your Word, we ask that you remind us of your everlasting presence. Amen
Hymn # 328 O Come, O Come, Immanuel vs. 1 & 5 - 7
(Gray Psalter Hymnal)
Psalter: Psalm 85 NRSV (read responsively) David McKinnis
1Lord, you were favorable to your land; you restored the fortunes of Jacob.
2You forgave the iniquity of your people; you pardoned all their sin.
3You withdrew all your wrath; you turned from your hot anger.
4Restore us again, O God of our salvation, and put away your indignation toward us.
5Will you be angry with us forever? Will you prolong your anger to all generations?
6Will you not revive us again, so that your people may rejoice in you?
7Show us your steadfast love, O Lord, and grant us your salvation.
8Let me hear what God the Lord will speak, for he will speak peace to his people, to his faithful, to those who turn to him in their hearts.
9Surely his salvation is at hand for those who fear him, that his glory may dwell in our land.
10Steadfast love and faithfulness will meet; righteousness and peace will kiss each other.
11Faithfulness will spring up from the ground, and righteousness will look down from the sky.
12The Lord will give what is good, and our land will yield its increase.
13Righteousness will go before him, and will make a path for his steps.
Prayer for Illumination David McKinnis
First Lesson: Mark 13: 21 - 27 NRSV David McKinnis
21And if anyone says to you at that time, ‘Look! Here is the Messiah!’ or ‘Look! There he is!’ —do not believe it. 22False messiahs and false prophets will appear and produce signs and omens, to lead astray, if possible, the elect. 23But be alert; I have already told you everything.
24“But in those days, after that suffering,
the sun will be darkened,
and the moon will not give its light,
25and the stars will be falling from heaven,
and the powers in the heavens will be shaken.
26Then they will see ‘the Son of Man coming in clouds’ with great power and glory. 27Then he will send out the angels, and gather his elect from the four winds, from the ends of the earth to the ends of heaven.
Lector: “This is the Word of God.”
Congregation: “Thanks be to God for His Word.”

Children’s Sermon
Hymn # 342 Of the Father’s Love Begotten
(Gray Psalter Hymnal)
Second Lesson: Isaiah 64 NRSV
1O that you would tear open the heavens and come down, so that the mountains would quake at your presence— 2as when fire kindles brushwood and the fire causes water to boil— to make your name known to your adversaries, so that the nations might tremble at your presence! 3When you did awesome deeds that we did not expect, you came down, the mountains quaked at your presence. 4From ages past no one has heard, no ear has perceived, no eye has seen any God besides you, who works for those who wait for him. 5You meet those who gladly do right, those who remember you in your ways. But you were angry, and we sinned; because you hid yourself we transgressed.
6We have all become like one who is unclean, and all our righteous deeds are like a filthy cloth. We all fade like a leaf, and our iniquities, like the wind, take us away. 7There is no one who calls on your name, or attempts to take hold of you; for you have hidden your face from us, and have delivered us into the hand of our iniquity. 8Yet, O Lord, you are our Father; we are the clay, and you are our potter; we are all the work of your hand. 9Do not be exceedingly angry, O Lord, and do not remember iniquity forever. Now consider, we are all your people. 10Your holy cities have become a wilderness, Zion has become a wilderness, Jerusalem a desolation. 11Our holy and beautiful house, where our ancestors praised you, has been burned by fire, and all our pleasant places have become ruins. 12After all this, will you restrain yourself, O Lord? Will you keep silent, and punish us so severely?

Worship
…is the quickening of conscience by God’s holiness;
the nourishment of mind with His truth;
the purifying of imagination by His beauty;
the opening of the heart to His love;
the surrender of the will to His purpose;
and all of this gathered up in adoration—
the most selfless emotion of which our nature is capable, and therefore the chief remedy for that self-centeredness which is our original sin and the source of all actual sin.” -William Temple

Guests please sign our guest book and join us in the Fellowship Hall after worship.
Babysitting is available during worship for infants up to

Music Notes
An English translation of the words to the hymn upon which the prelude is based:
O Thou of God the Father,
The true Eternal Son,
Of whom 'tis surely written,
That Thou with Him art one;
Thou art the bright and morning star,
Beyond all other radiance
Thy glory streams afar.

It’s Christmas Caroling Time Again
This year’s third annual Christmas Caroling / Chili Supper will be held on December 21st at 4:30 pm (second actually due to last year’s snowstorm). We will meet at the church and distribute music, then we will carol our way around parts of the surrounding neighborhoods. Carolers of all ages (and skill levels) are invited to join us. We will need some youngsters to hand out Christmas cards as we walk around. This might be a fun event to introduce your friends to Faith Church.
When we run out of energy and air, we will return to the church for a simple, but warm, chili supper. All you need bring is yourselves, friends and if you wish, some cookies to share. If you don’t want to carol but like chili, come to the supper anyway. We could actually use a few people to heat the chili up while the rest of us are warbling.
PLEASE let us know if you plan to attend so we know how much chili to prepare. There will be a sign-up sheet in the Narthex starting this Sunday. We hope to see and hear you there.
(NOTE: We will also have a few alternate choices for vegetarians and those with other dietary restraints).

Jubilee Christmas
Jubilee Christmas is coming! We will be hosting 18 families this year. The parents will be invited to select gifts for their children, so they can be the "heroes" on Christmas morning. We will be celebrating Jubilee Christmas on Saturday December 13 at 10 a.m. Breakfast will be served at 9:00 for guests and hosts, and all helpers are invited. We need a lot of help to make this a special day for our guests. Here's how you can help: 1. Pray. That it will be a day filled with love and blessings. 2. Toys. There's a Christmas tree in the fellowship hall with tags representing gifts ($25-30). There's also a bowl with tags for stocking stuffers ($1-5). If the toy needs batteries, please include 2 sets. Attach the tag to the unwrapped gift and place it in the box in the fellowship hall no later than Sunday December 7. 3. Gift wrap and bows. 4. Cookies and Refreshments*. 5. Family Gifts*. Things like laundry detergent and paper products. 6. Card Tables*. 7. Volunteers*. a. Each family needs a host. b. Setup, cleanup, and general help. 8. Money. This helps us to pay for the hams and gift certificates provided by LUM, a hat and mittens for each child, and a gift for each family, as well as purchase any last-minute toys or supplies. Place your gift in the morning offering or in the donations box in the fellowship hall. *Signup sheets for these are in the fellowship hall. Through Jubilee Christmas, we not only serve others in the community, but also grow as a community of believers in the Lord. We appreciate your help - Thanks! Questions? Talk to Donna Lofgren or Lou Ann Johnston.Posted by faithpres at November 30, 2008 08:38 AM
