The Order for the Worship of God
Faith Presbyterian Church 9:30 a.m., January 4, 2009
Let the first tone of the organ be a call to quiet meditation in which all may become aware of God’s presence, and lift up a prayer for yourself and for Faith Church.
Prelude Her Christ, der einge Gottes Sohn
(chorale and prelude) J.S. Bach (Germany, 1685-1750)
The only Son from heaven, foretold by ancient seers,
By God the Father, given, in human form appears;
No sphere His light confining,
No star so brightly shining as He, our Morning Star.
Bright and Glorious Is the Sky Paul Manz
(See gray hymnal, p. 360)
Welcome and Greeting
Hymn # 11 Rejoice, Ye Pure in Heart
(Green Supplemental Hymnal)
Psalter: Psalm 9: 1 - 10 NRSV (read responsively)
Grieke Toebes
1I will give thanks to the Lord with my whole heart; I will tell of all your wonderful deeds.
2I will be glad and exult in you; I will sing praise to your name, O Most High.
3When my enemies turned back, they stumbled and perished before you.
4For you have maintained my just cause; you have sat on the throne giving righteous judgment.
5You have rebuked the nations, you have destroyed the wicked; you have blotted out their name forever and ever.
6The enemies have vanished in everlasting ruins; their cities you have rooted out; the very memory of them has perished.
7But the Lord sits enthroned forever, he has established his throne for judgment.
8He judges the world with righteousness; he judges the peoples with equity.
9The Lord is a stronghold for the oppressed, a stronghold in times of trouble.
10And those who know your name put their trust in you, for you, O Lord, have not forsaken those who seek you.
Prayer for Illumination Grieke Toebes
First Lesson: Ephesians 1: 3 - 10 NRSV Grieke Toebes
3Blessed be the God and Father of our Lord Jesus Christ, who has blessed us in Christ with every spiritual blessing in the heavenly places, 4just as he chose us in Christ before the foundation of the world to be holy and blameless before him in love. 5He destined us for adoption as his children through Jesus Christ, according to the good pleasure of his will, 6to the praise of his glorious grace that he freely bestowed on us in the Beloved. 7In him we have redemption through his blood, the forgiveness of our trespasses, according to the riches of his grace 8that he lavished on us. With all wisdom and insight 9he has made known to us the mystery of his will, according to his good pleasure that he set forth in Christ, 10as a plan for the fullness of time, to gather up all things in him, things in heaven and things on earth.
Lector: “This is the Word of God.”
Congregation: “Thanks be to God for His Word.”

Children’s Sermon
Hymn # 31 Leaning On the Everlasting Arms
(Green Supplemental Hymnal)
Second Lesson: John 1: 9 - 13 NRSV
9The true light, which enlightens everyone, was coming into the world. 10He was in the world, and the world came into being through him; yet the world did not know him. 11He came to what was his own, and his own people did not accept him. 12But to all who received him, who believed in his name, he gave power to become children of God, 13who were born, not of blood or of the will of the flesh or of the will of man, but of God.
Sermon “Facing a New Year” Pastor David Horner
After the sermon children in grades K-6 may leave for children’s choir

Offertory The Star Proclaims the King is Here
Flor Peeters (Belgium, 1903-1986)
The star proclaims the King is here;
but Herod, why this senseless fear?
He takes no realms of earth away,
who gives the realms of heavenly day.
Led by the star,
the wisemen find the Light that lightens all mankind;
The threefold presents which they bring declare Him God, and Man, and King.
Response
As thy offered gifts most rare
At the cradle plain and bare,
So may we with holy joy,
Pure and free from sin’s alloy,
All our costliest treasures bring,
Christ, to you, our heavenly king.

Benediction
Postlude Rorate
little-known Scottish traditional tune
Rorate coeli de super! Heavens, distill your balmy showers;
For now is risen the bright Daystar,
From the rose Mary, flower of flowers:
The clear Sun, whom no cloud devours,
Surmounting Phoebus in the east,
Is comen of his heavenly towers, Et nobis puer natus est.
Sinners be glad, and pennance do,
and thank your Maker heartfully,
For he that ye might not come to, to you is comen full humbly.
Your soules with his blood to buy,
and loose you of the fiend's arrest,
And only of His own mercy;
Pro nobis puer natus est.
William Dunbar (Scottish diplomat, ex-Franciscan and poet)

Worship
…is the quickening of conscience by God’s holiness;
the nourishment of mind with His truth;
the purifying of imagination by His beauty;
the opening of the heart to His love;
the surrender of the will to His purpose;
and all of this gathered up in adoration—
the most selfless emotion of which our nature is capable, and therefore the chief remedy for that self-centeredness which is our original sin and the source of all actual sin.” -William Temple
