Let the first tone of the organ be a call to quiet meditation in which all may become aware of God’s presence, and lift up a prayer for yourself and for Faith Church.

Welcome and Greeting
Hymn # 18 All Hail the Power of Jesus’ Name
(Green Supplemental Hymnal)
Psalter: Psalm 18: 1 – 12 & 47 - 49 NRSV (read responsively)
Nancy Dunn
1I love you, O Lord, my strength.
2The Lord is my rock, my fortress, and my deliverer, my God, my rock in whom I take refuge, my shield, and the horn of my salvation, my stronghold.
3I call upon the Lord, who is worthy to be praised, so I shall be saved from my enemies.
4The cords of death encompassed me; the torrents of perdition assailed me;
5the cords of Sheol entangled me; the snares of death confronted me.
6In my distress I called upon the Lord; to my God I cried for help. From his temple he heard my voice, and my cry to him reached his ears.
7Then the earth reeled and rocked; the foundations also of the mountains trembled and quaked, because he was angry.
8Smoke went up from his nostrils, and devouring fire from his mouth; glowing coals flamed forth from him.
9He bowed the heavens, and came down; thick darkness was under his feet.
10He rode on a cherub, and flew; he came swiftly upon the wings of the wind.
11He made darkness his covering around him, his canopy thick clouds dark with water.
12Out of the brightness before him there broke through his clouds hailstones and coals of fire.
47the God who gave me vengeance and subdued peoples under me;
48who delivered me from my enemies; indeed, you exalted me above my adversaries; you delivered me from the violent.
49For this I will extol you, O Lord, among the nations, and sing praises to your name.
Prayer for Illumination Nancy Dunn
First Lesson: II Corinthians 4: 1 - 6 NRSV Nancy Dunn
1Therefore, since it is by God’s mercy that we are engaged in this ministry, we do not lose heart. 2We have renounced the shameful things that one hides; we refuse to practice cunning or to falsify God’s word; but by the open statement of the truth we commend ourselves to the conscience of everyone in the sight of God. 3And even if our gospel is veiled, it is veiled to those who are perishing. 4In their case the god of this world has blinded the minds of the unbelievers, to keep them from seeing the light of the gospel of the glory of Christ, who is the image of God. 5For we do not proclaim ourselves; we proclaim Jesus Christ as Lord and ourselves as your slaves for Jesus’ sake. 6For it is the God who said, “Let light shine out of darkness,” who has shone in our hearts to give the light of the knowledge of the glory of God in the face of Jesus Christ.
Lector: “This is the Word of God.”
Congregation: “Thanks be to God for His Word.”

Hymn # 265 Standing in the Need of Prayer
(Gray Psalter Hymnal)
Second Lesson: Mark 9: 2 - 13 NRSV
2Six days later, Jesus took with him Peter and James and John, and led them up a high mountain apart, by themselves. And he was transfigured before them, 3and his clothes became dazzling white, such as no one on earth could bleach them. 4And there appeared to them Elijah with Moses, who were talking with Jesus. 5Then Peter said to Jesus, “Rabbi, it is good for us to be here; let us make three dwellings, one for you, one for Moses, and one for Elijah.” 6He did not know what to say, for they were terrified. 7Then a cloud overshadowed them, and from the cloud there came a voice, “This is my Son, the Beloved; listen to him!” 8Suddenly when they looked around, they saw no one with them any more, but only Jesus.
9As they were coming down the mountain, he ordered them to tell no one about what they had seen, until after the Son of Man had risen from the dead. 10So they kept the matter to themselves, questioning what this rising from the dead could mean. 11Then they asked him, “Why do the scribes say that Elijah must come first?” 12He said to them, “Elijah is indeed coming first to restore all things. How then is it written about the Son of Man, that he is to go through many sufferings and be treated with contempt? 13But I tell you that Elijah has come, and they did to him whatever they pleased, as it is written about him.”

Worship
…is the quickening of conscience by God’s holiness;
the nourishment of mind with His truth;
the purifying of imagination by His beauty;
the opening of the heart to His love;
the surrender of the will to His purpose;
and all of this gathered up in adoration—
the most selfless emotion of which our nature is capable, and therefore the chief remedy for that self-centeredness which is our original sin and the source of all actual sin.” -William Temple
Welcome

The beautiful sculpture that hangs in fellowship hall was misplaced during the holidays, and we seek your help in finding it. Thank you, Dave McKinnis.
* A Word About the Prayer Cards – Prayers of thanksgiving and intercession are an important expression of our dependence on God as we gather for worship on Sunday mornings. The time we set aside for the voicing of our joys and concerns helps us in our life of prayer together. However, not everyone may feel comfortable to express praise or a need for prayer, but still would like to know the comfort of being prayed for. The blue cards in the pew racks are available to you to let Pastor Horner know of your prayer need. Please PRINT the information you want him to have on the card, and leave it in the offering plate. The ushers will hand the cards to Pastor Horner as they come forward. We hope this will be helpful in assuring that all our needs come before the throne of God as we pray with and for each other during our worship time.
* White Envelopes – For your convenience there are white envelopes in the pew racks to be used for donations to Faith Church General Fund.
* Would you like to help with beautifying the sanctuary on Sunday mornings? You can sign up to bring flowers on the flower calendar in the Narthex.
* For those wishing a visit at any time by Pastor Horner please be sure you let Stephanie know you are interested. Pastor Horner’s office hours are Monday – Thursday 9:30am – 1:30pm, or by appointment.
* If you need prayer or other help from the church or know of anyone else that does, please call Pastor Horner or one of the elders or deacons.
Music Notes
Whereas it was common for German composers to write chorale preludes on German reformation and post reformation chorales, it was common for French composers to write pieces based on plainsong, or Gregorian Chant. Adoro Te Devote is a chant that came into some hymnbooks as the hymn Humbly I Adore Thee. The music line is quite close to the original, though
the words have been changed into rhyming English.
Humbly I adore thee, Verity unseen.
Who thy glory hidest 'neath these shadows mean;
Lo, to thee surrendered, my whole heart is bowed,
Tranced as it beholds thee, shrined within the cloud.
O blest memorial of our dying Lord!
Thou living Bread, who life dost here afford,
O may our souls forever live by thee,
And thou to us forever precious be.
O Christ, whom now beneath a veil we see,
May what we thirst for soon our portion be,
There in the glory of thy dwelling place
To gaze on Thee unveiled, and see Thy face.
