The Order for the Worship of God

Faith Presbyterian Church 9:30 a.m., February 8, 2009
Let the first tone of the organ be a call to quiet meditation in which all may become aware of God’s presence, and lift up a prayer for yourself and for Faith Church.

Prelude God Moves In A Mysterious Way
(Gray hymnal, p. 434) Roy Brunner

God, That Madest Earth and Heaven Sharon Rogers
God, that madest earth and heaven, darkness and light;
Who the day for toil hast given, for rest the night;
May Thine angel-guards defend us,
slumber sweet thy mercy send us,
Holy dreams and hopes attend us this livelong night.

Welcome and Greeting

Hymn # 249 Holy, Holy, Holy! Lord God Almighty
(Gray Psalter Hymnal)

Psalter: Psalm 17: 1 – 9 & 15 NRSV (read responsively)
Dan Trinkle
1Hear a just cause, O Lord; attend to my cry; give ear to my prayer from lips free of deceit.
2From you let my vindication come; let your eyes see the right.
3If you try my heart, if you visit me by night, if you test me, you will find no wickedness in me; my mouth does not transgress.
4As for what others do, by the word of your lips I have avoided the ways of the violent.
5My steps have held fast to your paths; my feet have not slipped.
6I call upon you, for you will answer me, O God; incline your ear to me, hear my words.
7Wondrously show your steadfast love, O savior of those who seek refuge from their adversaries at your right hand.
8Guard me as the apple of the eye; hide me in the shadow of your wings,
9from the wicked who despoil me, my deadly enemies who surround me.
15As for me, I shall behold your face in righteousness; when I awake I shall be satisfied, beholding your likeness.

Prayer for Illumination Dan Trinkle

First Lesson: Mark 1: 32 - 39 NRSV Dan Trinkle
32That evening, at sundown, they brought to him all who were sick or possessed with demons. 33And the whole city was gathered around the door. 34And he cured many who were sick with various diseases, and cast out many demons; and he would not permit the demons to speak, because they knew him. 35In the morning, while it was still very dark, he got up and went out to a deserted place, and there he prayed. 36And Simon and his companions hunted for him. 37When they found him, they said to him, “Everyone is searching for you.” 38He answered, “Let us go on to the neighboring towns, so that I may proclaim the message there also; for that is what I came out to do.” 39And he went throughout Galilee, proclaiming the message in their synagogues and casting out demons.

Lector: “This is the Word of God.”

Congregation: “Thanks be to God for His Word.”

Anthem City of God Daniel Schutte

Children’s Sermon

Hymn # 457 He’s Got the Whole World in His Hands
(Gray Psalter Hymnal)

Second Lesson: Isaiah 40: 21 - 31 NRSV
21Have you not known? Have you not heard? Has it not been told you from the beginning? Have you not understood from the foundations of the earth? 22It is he who sits above the circle of the earth, and its inhabitants are like grasshoppers; who stretches out the heavens like a curtain, and spreads them like a tent to live in; 23who brings princes to naught, and makes the rulers of the earth as nothing. 24Scarcely are they planted, scarcely sown, scarcely has their stem taken root in the earth, when he blows upon them, and they wither, and the tempest carries them off like stubble. 25To whom then will you compare me, or who is my equal? says the Holy One. 26Lift up your eyes on high and see: Who created these? He who brings out their host and numbers them, calling them all by name; because he is great in strength, mighty in power, not one is missing.
27Why do you say, O Jacob, and speak, O Israel, “My way is hidden from the Lord, and my right is disregarded by my God”? 28Have you not known? Have you not heard? The Lord is the everlasting God, the Creator of the ends of the earth. He does not faint or grow weary; his understanding is unsearchable. 29He gives power to the faint, and strengthens the powerless. 30Even youths will faint and be weary, and the young will fall exhausted; 31but those who wait for the Lord shall renew their strength, they shall mount up with wings like eagles, they shall run and not be weary, they shall walk and not faint.

Sermon “The God Who Is There and Here”
Pastor David Horner

Magnify, come glority Christ Jesus, the King.
Majesty, worhip his majesty,
Jesus who died, now glorified, King of all Kings.

All things are Thine; no gift have we,
Lord of all gifts, to offer Thee;

Worship
…is the quickening of conscience by God’s holiness;
the nourishment of mind with His truth;
the purifying of imagination by His beauty;
the opening of the heart to His love;
the surrender of the will to His purpose;
and all of this gathered up in adoration—
the most selfless emotion of which our nature is capable, and therefore the chief remedy for that self-centeredness which is our original sin and the source of all actual sin.” -William Temple

Welcome
To all who are weary and seek rest; to all who mourn and long for comfort; to all who struggle and desire victory; to all who sin and need a Savior; to all who are idle and look for service; to all who are strangers and want fellowship; to all who hunger and thirst after righteousness; and to whosoever will come--this church opens wide her doors and offers her welcome in the name of Jesus Christ her Lord.
Guests please sign our guest book and join us in the Fellowship Hall after worship.
Babysitting is available during worship for infants up to
2-1/2 years old in the room behind the balcony. Children ages 2-1/2 through 5 will be in the Pre-School Nursery in the Education Wing. School age children worship with their parents.

Announcements

* Greeters this morning are Chris & Carol Christiansen.

* Ushers this morning are Terry & Jane Stewart and Dan & Kathy Trinkle.

* Java Heroes – The Stith’s

* A Word About the Prayer Cards – Prayers of thanksgiving and intercession are an important expression of our dependence on God as we gather for worship on Sunday mornings. The time we set aside for the voicing of our joys and concerns helps us in our life of prayer together. However, not everyone may feel comfortable to express praise or a need for prayer, but still would like to know the comfort of being prayed for. The blue cards in the pew racks are available to you to let Pastor Horner know of your prayer need. Please PRINT the information you want him to have on the card, and leave it in the offering plate. The ushers will hand the cards to Pastor Horner as they come forward. We hope this will be helpful in assuring that all our needs come before the throne of God as we pray with and for each other during our worship time.

* White Envelopes – For your convenience there are white envelopes in the pew racks to be used for donations to Faith Church General Fund.

* Would you like to help with beautifying the sanctuary on Sunday mornings? You can sign up to bring flowers on the flower calendar in the Narthex.

* For those wishing a visit at any time by Pastor Horner please be sure you let Stephanie know you are interested. Pastor Horner’s office hours are Monday – Thursday 9:30am – 1:30pm, or by appointment.

* If you need prayer or other help from the church or know of anyone else that does, please call Pastor Horner or one of the elders or deacons.

Books for El Salvador

Our Faith Youth Group is excited about becoming involved in International Missions! (Following the example of our belov’d “Doc”, for whom we pray earnestly this week, that the Spirit will use him mightily in Haiti)
We are calling it “Books for El Salvador”. Ross and Melissa Tanner (our intrepid Youth leaders of times past) are in the process of obtaining a grant to build a local library near the school – But, Melissa writes: “The school in our village does not have ANY books, not even textbooks for class. As you can imagine, the children are all very excited about the prospect of a library, but they do not seem to understand that even when it is finished, we will still have no books.”
However, a donor has been lined up who promises to match any money we raise—50 cents on the dollar. But we have a problem: so far the youth have only $2.65 between them. (One of the girls suggested they all begin by giving up lunch for a week, but alas, no takers from amongst the boys – and the girls don’t think its fair they have to do all the work.)

Can you please help??
We would need all of the donations in by February 22. The smallest amount you can give will help! Please us the white envelopes in the pews and clearly designate “Books”.
We are very excited to be able to help (and hope you will be, too). Maybe we can even make some friends in Melissa’s village. Thank you.

JOIN US TODAY!!!
IN THE BLEAK MIDWINTER . .

A special Bleak Midwinter pitch-in luncheon will be enjoyed at Faith Church TODAY, SUNDAY, FEBRUARY 8th at noon after Sunday school. (You may wear your boots, if so inclined.)
Our TALENTED GOURMET COOKS will have prepared especial warm comfort food in crock pots to soothe one’s innards and allow one to bask in the warmth of good fellowship and excellent food, food designed to banish the bleak midwinter days and long, gruesome midwinter nights and snow and ice and boots.
Faith folk are always, always faithful to the chosen theme of AN EATING EXPERIENCE, so there will be a special table reserved for the BLEAK AND THE DOWNTRODDEN, those for whom the glass is always empty. (Not that there’s anything wrong with that, of course.)
At that SINGLE, BLEAK TABLE sauerkraut will be served. (Hardy, happy folk may eat it too, but they will definitely be smiling and rosy-cheeked from playing in the snow, and delightfully musing about the long winter’s nap they will take when they get home and take off their boots.)
You need to know that drinks and table service will be provided. You are invited to bring salad or dessert to share. And you may decide before you get here whether you want to be BLEAK or BRIGHT. You don’t have to register or declare yourself for either side.
A SPECIAL LITURGICAL DANCING TROUPE was going to dance liturgically but cancelled at the last minute as some of the members forgot their leotards. So in lieu of liturgy, we will be enjoying some light but VERY SPECIAL entertainment following the eating part.
COME ON SUNDAY. You DON”T WANT TO MISS THIS! Probably the sermon will be good, too.
