June Newsletter
Pastor's Pen
It is raining today (May 13th) and some small birds have been seeking shelter under my car which is parked in the church parking lot. I am certain that the engineers at Chrysler designed that car to many specifications. But I am equally certain that they did not design it to be a storm shelter for birds. God sometimes uses our lives and our resources and our plans in ways that we cannot foresee. Please be open to God’s plans and designs as your own plans and designs go awry. He really does know what he is doing, even though it may take years or even till the dawn of eternity for us to perceive it.
This June will mark my first anniversary as Pastor of Faith Presbyterian Church. It has been a wonderful year and I look forward to many more great years as your Pastor. I have not been able to get to know some of you as well as I had hoped this first year, and my attempts to meet with all of you will continue.
This June will also bring our annual Vacation Bible School. I plan to participate in my small way by taking part in the opening Worship each day. I am grateful to be able to support the great Vacation Bible School All-Volunteer Staff in this way. I and they will get to know your children, grandchildren, and other children in our neighborhoods. VBS gives us an opportunity to instruct many children in the Faith in Jesus. We pray that we will be able to teach and reach a great number of children this year. Please pray for our Vacation Bible School, its staff, and its students. Pray for safety and for the working of the Holy Spirit as we Worship, teach, play, and listen.
Shortly after Vacation Bible School, Diane and I will be taking two weeks of Vacation. We are expecting a new-born grandson at the end of May and we have set aside part of this time to get to know him. Diane is going to support our daughter, the new mother. I am going to spend many hours holding my grandson and letting him know what an odd yet delightful bunch of people he has been born into.
While I am away, Elder Steve Varys will be preaching and leading Worship on June 21st. The Rev. Ralph Smith will do the same on June 28th.
I am praying that the warm days of Summer will take you to some wonderful, restful, and even exotic places. I also pray that you will find rest if you need it and excitement if you need that. And most of all I pay that you will be kept safe in the strong embrace of our Eternal Father during the Summer months and for the rest of your earthly pilgrimage.
Your Pastor,
Dave Horner

At the May 5, 2009 meeting the Session:
• Reviewed the vote at the recent meeting of the Presbytery of Wabash Valley that went in favor of the so-called chastity amendment. Pastor Horner stated that Faith Presbyterian Church is now in the minority of the congregations voting against the amendment, and that sufficient time is available to carefully weigh future options
• Granted personal leaves of absence to Pastor Horner on June 21, June 28, and July 19, 2009
• Authorized the serving of communion on Pentecost Sunday, May 31, rather than on the first Sunday of June
• Accepted the current financial report by Carol Gentry, Treasurer, that shows a current surplus
• Noted that a gardener has been employed to attend to the beautification of the grounds under the supervision of Elder Ann Landgrebe
• Noted the scheduling of a grounds cleanup event scheduled for June 20, 2009
• Authorized the performance of four weddings as listed below:
Cari Van Tuinen & Daniel Carpenter, Elizabeth Goodrich & Adam Fassel, Patricia Butteiger & Andrew Rhymer, Erin Sparks & Cameron Ward.
• Complimented Elder Steven Varys for his leadership in organizing youth activities
• Was briefed on the dismissal service for the three congregations that departed the denomination
• Discussed the serving of communion to minor children, as authorized in the Book of Order under appropriate guidance by the parents; Pastor Horner will provide additional guidelines in the near future
• Moved for adjournment, with the next meeting scheduled for June 2, 2009.
J.M. Honig, Clerk of Session
Thank-you, thank-you, thank-you....
To Shirley and Jim Bosler, Polly and Ace Tyler, Helen and Dick Day, and Carol and Don Gentry who hosted the Faith Fellowship Dinners held in May. Lively conversation and tasty food are always a popular way to spend an afternoon with friends at Faith Church. If you could not attend this time, we will repeat this activity in a few months.

Why God never received tenure at any University
1. He had only one major.
2. It was in Hebrew.
3. It had no references.
4. It wasn’t published in a referred journal.
5. He may have created the world, but what has He done since?
6. The scientific community can’t replicate His results.
7. He never got permission from the ethics board to use human subjects.
8. When one experiment went awry, He tried to cover it up by drowning the subjects.
9. He rarely came to class and just told students, “Read the Book.”
10. He expelled His first two students.
11. His office hours were irregular and sometimes held on a mountain top.
12. Although there were only ten requirements, most students fail.
13. He refuses to tell anyone when the class actually ends.
