August Newsletter
Pastor's Pen
I am back from all of my summer vacations. In May we traveled to Rochester NY to witness our youngest son’s graduation. In June we visited our then 2 week old grandson Gus (given name, Augustine), my father, and some friends. We also visited the Atlantic Ocean in Rehoboth DE. And I went to a model railroad show and sale in suburban Baltimore. In July we visited our son, daughter-in-law, and granddaughter Lynn in Minnesota. During our travels we drove in parts of 11 states and traveled over 4,000 miles.
But at the end of each trip it was good to come back home to Indiana and Faith Church.
I am grateful to Ralph Smith, Steve Varys, and Glenn Sparks who led Worship and preached at Faith in my absence. During my career I have always tried to find Godly and well-spoken men and women to fill in for me when I took vacations. I am delighted that such fine Christian leaders are available within the membership of our own congregation.
For better or worse, I am planning to be preaching and leading worship from now till the end of the year. I have chosen the Scripture passages and possible sermon topics for the next two and a half months and I am excited about what we are going to be doing in Worship during that time.
As we move into August, our late summer programs begin. Our Sunday School will begin at 11:00 on August 16th. In the adult class we will continue our study of the Westminster Confession.
The following Thursday (August 20th) we will begin the Thursday evening Bible Study at my home (2125 Marconi Court) at 7:00. For the first few weeks we will be finishing the letter to the Ephesians, then we will decide what larger book of the bible we will do for the rest of the academic year.
Before I finish this column, I need to note that some of our friends departed from us in July. Charlie Mather died on July 12th. He was a Physician who loved helping moms bring their babies into this world. He also loved animals and life on the farm.
Gerda Kohnke died on July 16th. She was trained to be a physician but moved to the United States from Germany before she could practice medicine. Most of us at Faith Church came to know Gerda after she had lost her sight. She handled her handicap well, memorizing the locations of everything in her apartment. She was a great lady with a kind and gentle way of expressing herself.
We look forward to being reunited with Charlie and Gerda in Christ’s everlasting Kingdom and we thank God for the lives that they lived among us. We also remember their families in our prayers.
Your Pastor,
Dave Horner

Meaningful Monday Ministries!!
The Evangelism Committee is planning a miniseries of Monday evening dinner/meetings for this fall. The dates are September 14, October 19, and November 16. Each session will begin with a free dinner at 6:00pm followed by three separate activities: an interesting presentation for adults, a kid’s program, and childcare for those too young to enjoy the other activities. The programming will begin at 7:00pm and be finished by 8:00pm. Topics for the presentations will be announced later. We are planning for topics such as home Internet security, reconciling science and religion, zoo presentations, etc. If you have suggestions or ideas for possible program topics, please contact an Evangelism Committee member. The purpose of these meetings is to get us together informally and to, of course, bring friends and families into our church to see who and what we are. We want everyone in the congregation to attend if possible and we really need you to go out and find people to bring with you. As with any worthwhile endeavor, we will need help. In the coming weeks, we will be asking you to sign up to help in several areas: setting up tables, preparing food, serving food, childcare, cleanup, and prayer. We have vast personal resources within our congregation. This makes us confident that we can pull this off and, with God’s help, acquaint our congregation with new friends. Please contact us with ideas and sign up to get involved when asked.
Thank you in advance for your cooperation and participation.

You're Invited!
For several years the folks of Elston Presbyterian Church have had a picnic at the residence of Don & Louise Jewell.
The Jewell’s purchased an old Girl Scout camp many years ago and through the years have added beautiful gardens of vegetables, fruits and flowers. They have dug ponds for various uses, including fishing. Their property is a great place to relax and enjoy the great outdoors.
We have been invited to join them on the 22nd of August around noon. Their place is about 15 miles south west of our Church. Their address is 10577 E 450 N, Otterbein. Their telephone is 583-4865 and their email is highbridgecountry@hughes.net.
You are to bring your own lawn chairs, bug stuff, table service and a dish to share, such as a casserole, a salad or a dessert. Iced tea and lemonade will be provided.
Plan on attending, I am sure you will have a wonderful time and meet some new friends.

Here are directions from Lafayette from Louise:
From West Lafayette (the McDonalds on the Levee) come South on St Rd 231 to the second light & turn right on & follow South River Road to 1125E. This is just at the East edge of Green Hill and you are now in Warren County and will have come about 13 miles, past Fort Quiatenon, up curvy Indian Hill, past the Ravines Golf Course, and County Line Road. Turn left onto 1125 and go just over 2 miles to the first road to the right, 450N. Turn right. We are the first house on the left. It is about 1/2 mile down the road, a two story beige house behind an old chain link fence. May sound complicated, but it is really an easy 20 – 30 minute drive.
OR
Come out State Street (State Road 26) to the first left after Purdue’s last light McCormick/Airport (I think) to the next left at the Old Hooks Drug story and the underpass (Newman Road). Take this down to South River Road and continue as above.
OR
If its easier, you may come out Elston Road to Lilly Road. Come past Lilly about 7 miles to the first stop sign. Turn right, go over the Wabash on Granville Bridge. Turn left and go to 1125E. Turn left to the first road to the right, 450N. Turn right, and we are the first house on the left.
WANTED: Any table linens or plastic cloths you may have borrowed from the church kitchen. Please bring them back----No questions asked.

LUM Camperships Still Needed
If you are thinking about providing a campership for LUM Camp 2009 but haven’t yet made your gift, there is still time. A $130 campership covers the cost of transportation, camp facilities, food service, life guards, educational programs, supplies and all the other necessities to make camp memorable. LUM Camp takes place during the first week of August at beautiful Hanging Rock Camp near West Lebanon in Warren County. You may mail your campership to 525 N. 4th St., Lafayette, IN 47901 or contribute online at www.lafayetteurbanministry.org . Thank you!
Did You Know??
Congratulations to Nadya Dubikovsky and two of her piano students who won silver medals at the Cincinnati International Piano Competition. Over 130 pianists from all over the world compete in preliminaries, semi-finals, and finals.
David Du, five years old, won a silver medal in level 2. Christopher Parks won a silver medal in level 10, concerto. Gold, silver and bronze medeal winners in all 12 divisions will perform at Carnegie Hall!
Three cheers for these two local pianists and their teacher. (Carnegie Hall at five years old? Wow.)
The latest wedding was held on July 11 at Faith Church—Elizabeth Goodrich and Adam Fassel. The bride was lovely; the groom was blushing; the bride's father did not fall down in the aisle, as had been anticipated; the groomsmen looked swell (no one chewing gum), and the party after was spiffy (and fun)!
Carson McVay will be a walk-on at Purdue for the track team! Congratulations, and keep on runnin', Carson.
Mayfawny Bergmann was on the stage at the Tippecanoe County Amphitheater this month, singing in the chorus as one of the King's wives in «The King and I.»
That new baby without a last name has been identified as: Augustine Ambrose DeSocio, grandson of David and Diane Horner. Grandmother Horner has some photographs she'd love to share.
Jerry and Cathy Tanner visited their son Ross and daughter-in-law Melissa this summer in El Salvador. They report the library now has a home, it has been painted inside and now they're waiting for the books to arrive. Ross and Melissa were youth directors at Faith and are now serving at a mission in . The Faith Youth Group was responsible for collecting a hefty donation to get this library started.
We said goodbye two friends this month, Charley (Dr. Charles) Mather and Gerda Kohnke. Both led long and distnguished lives of service and caring for others.
