September Newsletter

Pastor's Pen

As I observed last August, a lot happens in August in Indiana. As we begin September, our Sunday School, Youth Group and Bible Studies have already started. We thank those who have volunteered to teach our Sunday School classes and the Sunday Evening Bible Study this year. They will make a real difference in the lives of our children and some of us adults.

During the Summer, I had a chance to compose a short paper on the meaning of the Sacrament of the Lord’s Supper and how to prepare young children to participate in the Sacrament. You will find copies of this document on the table in the narthex with the texts of past sermons. This paper was written mostly for those of us who have young children accompany them to Worship, but others who seek a reminder of the Reformed view of this Sacrament may also find it helpful.

As Purdue begins its academic year, I would like to call your attention to an activity that is being planned by the Stewart Christian Cooperative House on campus. The young women of that house are going to sponsor a pornography awareness event in September. They are concerned that pornography is ruining many young lives and they want to help people escape its grasp. Our board of Deacons has sent them a donation to help cover the expenses incurred by this event. I am pleased to note that one of our Faith members, Lana Johnston, is a member of the Stewart Cooperative and has brought this event to our attention. She is also on the planning committee for this event. If you wish to make a donation to the Stewart Cooperative for this event, you may contact Lana.

I am also pleased to note that our Evangelism Committee will be sponsoring a “Meaningful Monday Mini-Series”. The first event in this series will be held on September 14th. We are praying that this event and others like it will bring some of our nearby neighbors to us. We also pray that it will help our members and friends become more knowledgeable about certain things and experience a closer relationship with other Faith people.

The most noteworthy September holiday in our nation is Labor Day. This Labor Day will be an ironic one for the many people in our Nation and State who have lost their jobs this year. I invite and remind you to pray for those who have lost their jobs and those who are seeking employment. I also invite you to reach out to someone who has lost his/ job and help them in some way, even if it is just to take them out to lunch. I also invite you to pray that our “economic downturn” will reverse soon so everyone will be able to find employment.

Speaking of Work, I would like to thank all those who worked at Habitat for Humanity during August. I also thank Dan Trinkle for heading up Faith’s efforts again this year. It is a noble endeavor to help families purchase their own homes.

I pray that all of you will have a good September and that you will grow in Godliness.

Your Pastor,
Dave Horner

Clerk's Corner

CLERK’S CORNER; August 2009

The Session met on August 4, 2009, after having skipped the July 2009 meeting. The following items were taken up:
• The Clerk reported that at the recent review of the church records the documentation was approved with commendation
• A listing of names of active and inactive members on the church roster was distributed; Session members were asked to scrutinize the listing and to report on any necessary changes
• The institution of a limousine service for transportation of elderly congregants is under discussion
• A petition by Lana Johnston for financial support for a pornography awareness event at Purdue University by her sorority was approved. She will be given the opportunity to describe the plans at an upcoming Minute for Missions portion at Sunday services and to take up a collection for this cause at the coffee hour following the Sunday service; the Deacons have also pledged a financial contribution
• The Session is reviewing plans for partnering with a church in Haiti that is sponsoring the mercy mission of Dr. Michael Lockwood who is volunteering his medical services to the poor in Haiti. He will present information on the ‘twining operation’ at a forthcoming Minute for Missions segment of Sunday services
• The Session was informed that the University Church is seeking to be readmitted to membership in the Presbytery of Wabash Valley
• The Session is reviewing a document that deals with the serving of communion to baptized minor children
• Elder Steven Varys has expressed his interest in participating in a training program for Lay Pastors; the appropriate supporting documentation was approved by Session and will shortly be forwarded to the Presbytery
• The Session was informed that Nadya Dubikovsky’s mother is under hospice care
• The latest budgetary report submitted by Treasurer Carol Gentry was approved; pledge letters are being readied for distribution
• A new set of door locks have been installed and keys reissued, following a recent break-in; nothing of value was taken, but there was some vandalism in the office areas
• Sunday school operations are ready to resume on August 16, 2009
• Planning for the Monday evening miniseries is well underway; the program was detailed in the preceding issue of the Family Newsletter
• Changes are being instituted in the format of the Sunday Bulletins and of the Family Newsletters
• After review, the Clerk was authorized to forward documentation regarding financial remuneration of the Pastor to the Presbytery of Wabash Valley
• The Session authorized the serving of Communion to Dessa Shin who is hospitalized with serious illness

Thank You

Our church is responsible for working at the Church Women United food pantry at Hanna Center twice a year, once in August and then again in December. Our turn in August was cheerfully "manned" by Don and Carol Gentry, Dorothy Bethel, Barbara Knox, Nancy Moore and Polly Tyler. WE THANK YOU! Any future volunteers should contact Marilyn Hinze, 583-2530.

Meaningful Monday Miniseries

The Evangelism Committee is planning a miniseries of Monday evening dinner/meetings for this fall. The dates are September 14, October 19, and November 16. Each session will begin with a free dinner at 6:00pm followed by three separate activities: an interesting presentation for adults, a kid’s program, and childcare for those too young to enjoy the other activities. The programming will begin at 7:00pm and be finished by 8:00pm. Topics for the presentations will be announced later. We are planning for topics such as internet security at home, preparing family meals, reconciling science and religion, zoo presentations, etc. If you have suggestions or ideas for possible program topics, please contact an Evangelism Committee member. The purpose of these meetings is to get us together informally and to, of course, bring friends and families into our church to see who and what we are. We want everyone in the congregation to attend if possible and we really need you to go out and find people to bring with you. As with any worthwhile endeavor, we will need help. In the coming weeks, we will be asking you to sign up to help in several areas: setting up tables, preparing food, serving food, childcare, cleanup, and prayer. We have vast personal resources within our congregation. This makes us confident that we can pull this off and, with God’s help, acquaint our congregation with new friends. Please contact us with ideas and sign up to get involved when asked.

Thank you in advance for your cooperation and participation.

The Evangelism Committee

Join us for Bible Study Fellowship and John!

The 14th year of BSF in the Lafayette area is starting on Thursday, September 17. We meet at the Kossuth Street Baptist Church (2901 Kossuth Street) on Thursday mornings from 9:10am-11:15am. This year we study the Gospel of John, really digging into this cornerstone of our Christian Faith.

A great pre-school program for ages 2 to 5 is available for your children. They work on the same lesson you do, learning songs, scripture and participating in activities designed to bring out the lesson for them. Each week you also get a really great handout with parenting tips. Please note: The children's program is NOT available on the first day.

Where else can you find a 33-week bible study for FREE? AND you don't have to do it alone! AND you'll be able to start each Thursday morning singing some really wonderful hymns with other wonderful women.

Last year BSF hosted 300 women representing 98 churches in Lafayette area and the surrounding communities. We hope you will be one of them this year!

If you would like more information, please talk to Carol Gentry, 497-2627; Mary Lou Varys, 583-2745; or Kathy Trinkle, 463-1107.

Presbyterian Habitat House

I am very happy to report the following updates on the Presbyterian Habitat House.

Construction is progressing on schedule for the house. Faith has already participated in our two scheduled work Saturdays, August 8th and August 15th. We had a productive construction crew both days, and everyone was well-fed on August 8 by the Faith snack and lunch crew. We are grateful for the contributions of the construction volunteers Pastor David Horner, Doug Jones, Andy Kirby, Andy McVey, Carson McVey, Jane Stewart, Terry Stewart, David Stith, Jim Varys and Steve Varys. The snack and lunch crew was organized by Kathy Bowker and included Ann Freeman, Cathy McKinnis, Polly Tyler, Barbara Knox, and Peggy Housley.

If the construction stays on schedule, we anticipate the house blessing will be Sunday afternoon, September 13th. Please watch the bulletin for updates. All are invited to share in this event with Steve Hobaugh and his family.

The other really great news is that we have now reached our fund raising goal of $46,000. All excess funds collected will go towards our next Habitat house.
Dan Trinkle
