Hymn # 48 Great Is the Lord Our God
(Gray Psalter Hymnal)

Psalter: Psalm 110 NRSV (read responsively) Nancy Moore
1The Lord says to my lord, “Sit at my right hand until I make your enemies your footstool.”
2The Lord sends out from Zion your mighty scepter. Rule in the midst of your foes.
3Your people will offer themselves willingly on the day you lead your forces on the holy mountains. From the womb of the morning, like dew, your youth will come to you.
4The Lord has sworn and will not change his mind, “You are a priest forever according to the order of Melchizedek.”
5The Lord is at your right hand; he will shatter kings on the day of his wrath.
6He will execute judgment among the nations, filling them with corpses; he will shatter heads over the wide earth.
7He will drink from the stream by the path; therefore he will lift
up his head.

Prayer for Illumination Nancy Moore

First Lesson: Genesis 14: 14 - 20 NRSV Nancy Moore
14When Abram heard that his nephew had been taken captive, he led forth his trained men, born in his house, three hundred eighteen of them, and went in pursuit as far as Dan. 15He divided his forces against them by night, he and his servants, and routed them and pursued them to Hobah, north of Damascus. 16Then he brought back all the goods, and also brought back his nephew Lot with his goods, and the women and the people.
17After his return from the defeat of Chedorlaomer and the kings who were with him, the king of Sodom went out to meet him at the Valley of Shaveh (that is, the King’s Valley). 18And King Melchizedek of Salem brought out bread and wine; he was priest of God Most High. 19He blessed him and said, “Blessed be Abram by God Most High, maker of heaven and earth; 20and blessed be God Most High, who has delivered your enemies into your hand!” And Abram gave him one tenth of everything.

Lector: “This is the Word of God.”

Congregation: “Thanks be to God for His Word.”

Anthem Praise to the Lord arr. F. Christiansen
(Hymn # 253 in the gray psalter hymnal)

Children’s Sermon

Hymn # 45 He Hideth My Soul
(Green Supplemental Hymnal)

Second Lesson: Hebrews 4: 14 – 5: 10 NRSV
14Since, then, we have a great high priest who has passed through the heavens, Jesus, the Son of God, let us hold fast to our confession. 15For we do not have a high priest who is unable to sympathize with our weaknesses, but we have one who in every respect has been tested as we are, yet without sin. 16Let us therefore approach the throne of grace with boldness, so that we may receive mercy and find grace to help in time of need.
1Every high priest chosen from among mortals is put in charge of things pertaining to God on their behalf, to offer gifts and sacrifices for sins. 2He is able to deal gently with the ignorant and wayward, since he himself is subject to weakness; 3and because of this he must offer sacrifice for his own sins as well as for those of the people. 4And one does not presume to take this honor, but takes it only when called by God, just as Aaron was. 5So also Christ did not glorify himself in becoming a high priest, but was appointed by the one who said to him, “You are my Son, today I have begotten you”; 6as he says also in another place, “You are a priest forever, according to the order of Melchizedek.” 7In the days of his flesh, Jesus offered up prayers and supplications, with loud cries and tears, to the one who was able to save him from death, and he was heard because of his reverent submission. 8Although he was a Son, he learned obedience through what he suffered; 9and having been made perfect, he became the source of eternal salvation for all who obey him,
10having been designated by God a high priest according to the order of Melchizedek.

Offertory Jesus My Great High Priest
Healey Willan (Canada, 1880-1968)

Jesus, my great High Priest, offered His blood and died;
My guilty conscience seeks no sacrifice beside.
His powerful blood did once atone,
And now it pleads before the throne.

Response
Praise God, from whom all blessings flow;
Praise him, all creatures here below.
Praise him above, you heavenly host;
Praise Father, Son, and Holy Ghost. –Tallis Canon

Benediction

Postlude March Pontificale
Jacques Lemmens (Belgium, 1823-1881)

Worship
…is the quickening of conscience by God’s holiness;
the nourishment of mind with His truth;
the purifying of imagination by His beauty;
the opening of the heart to His love;
the surrender of the will to His purpose;
and all of this gathered up in adoration—
the most selfless emotion of which our nature is capable, and therefore the chief remedy for that self-centeredness which is our original sin and the source of all actual sin.” -William Temple

Missions

Hope Clinic
Hope Clinic (Clinica Benefactora “La Esperanza”) and the Priscila Presbyterian Bible School were founded in the 1960s by a group of presbyterian doctors, ministers and a missionary couple, Eula and Ernest Mathews. Our interest in these organizations started in the 1970s when a group of people from Faith Presbyterian Church went to the Yucatan to help build a small church there.

The purpose of Hope Clinic is to provide reasonably priced medical care for the poor residents of Yucatan villages. The goals of the clinic are to maintain a Christian atmosphere in the clinic and to deliver its services for the lowest possible prices.

Priscila Bible School
Priscila Presbyterian Bible School was established to give residential training to girls by providing a three year course in basic and Christian education. This enables them to go back to their own communities and teach there. It has also established a Department of Music, teaching both vocal and instrumental music, which is open to non-boarding male and female students.
