The Order for the Worship of God
Faith Presbyterian Church 9:30 a.m., December 6, 2009
Let the first tone of the organ be a call to quiet meditation in which all may become aware of God’s presence, and lift up a prayer for yourself and for Faith Church.
Prelude O Christ, Our true and Only Light
Helmut Walcha (Germany, 1907-1991)
Chorale & Fantasie on "Jesu, meine Freude" Gerald Kemner
(See gray hymnal, p. 572)
Greeting & Invocation
Lighting of the Candle – The Latour Family, candlelighters
The second candle, the Bethlehem candle, reminds us that Jesus was born in Bethlehem, where King David was born, as the prophet Micah foretold.
Prayer
God in heaven, as we learn to wait in faith, help us now to watch in expectation. Open our eyes that we might see the ways you are at work around us, within us and through us. Amen.
Hymn # 340 O Come, All Ye Faithful
(Gray Psalter Hymnal)
Prayer of Confession – front of gray hymnal
Prayer for Illumination Terry Stewart
First Lesson: Luke 23: 26 - 31 NRSV Terry Stewart
26As they led him away, they seized a man, Simon of Cyrene, who was coming from the country, and they laid the cross on him, and made him carry it behind Jesus. 27A great number of the people followed him, and among them were women who were beating their breasts and wailing for him. 28But Jesus turned to them and said, “Daughters of Jerusalem, do not weep for me, but weep for yourselves and for your children. 29For the days are surely coming when they will say, ‘Blessed are the barren, and the wombs that never bore, and the breasts that never nursed.’ 30Then they will begin to say to the mountains, ‘Fall on us’; and to the hills, ‘Cover us.’ 31For if they do this when the wood is green, what will happen when it is dry?”
Lector: “This is the Word of God.”
Congregation: “Thanks be to God for His Word.”
Anthem A Shoot Shall Come Forth Richard Horn
For the hand of a Child shall lead them.
To the peaceable kingdom of God.
Children’s Sermon
Hymn # 22b All Praise to Thee
(Christmas Hymnal)
Second Lesson: Malachi 3: 1 – 5 & 4: 5 - 6 NRSV
1See, I am sending my messenger to prepare the way before me, and the Lord whom you seek will suddenly come to his temple. The messenger of the covenant in whom you delight—indeed, he is coming, says the Lord of hosts. 2But who can endure the day of his coming, and who can stand when he appears? For he is like a refiner’s fire and like fullers’ soap; 3he will sit as a refiner and purifier of silver, and he will purify the descendants of Levi and refine them like gold and silver, until they present offerings to the Lord in righteousness. 4Then the offering of Judah and Jerusalem will be pleasing to the Lord as in the days of old and as in former years. 5Then I will draw near to you for judgment; I will be swift to bear witness against the sorcerers, against the adulterers, against those who swear falsely, against those who oppress the hired workers in their wages, the widow and the orphan, against those who thrust aside the alien, and do not fear me, says the Lord of hosts.
5Lo, I will send you the prophet Elijah before the great and terrible day of the Lord comes. 6He will turn the hearts of parents to their children and the hearts of children to their parents, so that I will not come and strike the land with a curse.
Sermon “What Kind of a Christmas Is This?”

The Lord’s Supper
Invitation
Words of Institution: I Corinthians 11: 23 - 26 NRSV
In Unison
23For I received from the Lord what I also handed on to you, that the Lord Jesus on the night when he was betrayed took a loaf of bread, 24and when he had given thanks, he broke it and said, “This is my body that is for you. Do this in remembrance of me.” 25In the same way he took the cup also, after supper, saying, “This cup is the new covenant in my blood. Do this, as often as you drink it, in remembrance of me.” 26For as often as you eat this bread and drink the cup, you proclaim the Lord’s death until he comes.
Prayer of Thanksgiving
Giving and receiving of the Bread and Cup
The inside cups are white grape juice; the outer cups contain wine.
Prayer of Consecration
Almighty Lord: we are thankful for all the benefits given us in this bread and wine, this body and blood. As the grain was harvested and the grapes gathered for this food, so may your church in every place be gathered into your household. And as the grain was ground and the grapes crushed, so may our lives be spent in your service, until you return in triumph to gather to yourself the harvest and call us to the marriage feast of the lamb. Amen.
Hymn # 31 Thou Didst Leave Thy Throne vs. 4 - 5
(Christmas Hymnal)
Benediction
Postlude O God, O Lord of Heaven and Earth Paul Manz
(See music words)
Worship
…is the quickening of conscience by God’s holiness;
the nourishment of mind with His truth;
the purifying of imagination by His beauty;
the opening of the heart to His love;
the surrender of the will to His purpose;
and all of this gathered up in adoration—
the most selfless emotion of which our nature is capable, and therefore the chief remedy for that self-centeredness which is our original sin and the source of all actual sin.” -William Temple
Welcome
To all who are weary and seek rest; to all who mourn and long for comfort; to all who struggle and desire victory; to all who sin and need a Savior; to all who are idle and look for service; to all who are strangers and want fellowship; to all who hunger and thirst after righteousness; and to whosoever will come--this church opens wide her doors and offers her welcome in the name of Jesus Christ her Lord.

Music Words
O God, O Lord of heaven and earth,
Thy living finger never wrote
that life should be an aimless note,
a deathward drift from futile birth.
Thy Word meant life triumphant hurled
through every cranny of Thy world.
Since light awoke and life began
Thou hast desired Thy life for man.
Our fatal will to equal thee,
our rebel will, wrought death and night.
We seized and used in thy despite
Thy wondrous gift of liberty.
We housed us in this house of doom,
where death had royal scope and room,
until thy servant, Prince of Peace,
breached all its walls for our release.
Thou camest to our hall of death,
O Christ, to breathe our poisoned air,
to drink for us the dark despair
that strangled man's reluctant breath.
How beautiful the feet that trod
the road that leads us back to God.
How beautiful the feet that ran
to bring the great good news to man.
O Spirit, who didst once restore
thy Church that it might be again
the bringer of good news to men,
breathe on thy cloven church once more,
that in these gray and latter days
there may be men whose life is praise,
each life a high doxology
to Father, Son and unto Thee.
Martin Franzmann (1907-76)

Jubilee Christmas
Jubilee Christmas is coming! We will be hosting 18 families this year. The parents will be invited to select gifts for their children, so they can be the "heroes" on Christmas morning. We will be celebrating Jubilee Christmas on Saturday, December 12 at 10 a.m. Breakfast will be served at 9:00 for guests and hosts, and all helpers are invited.
We need a lot of help to make this a special day for our guests. Here's how you can help:
1. Pray. That it will be a day filled with love and blessings.
2. Toys. There's a Christmas tree in the fellowship hall with tags representing gifts ($25-30). There's also a bowl with tags for stocking stuffers ($1-5). If the toy needs batteries, please include 2 sets. Attach the tag to the unwrapped gift and place it in the box in the fellowship hall no later than Sunday, December 6.
3. Gift wrap and bows.
4. Cookies and Refreshments*.
5. Family Gifts*. Things like laundry detergent and paper products.
6. Card Tables*.
7. Volunteers*.
a. Each family needs a host.
b. Setup, cleanup, and general help.
8. Money. This helps us to pay for the hams and gift certificates provided by LUM, a hat and mittens for each child, and a gift for each family, as well as purchase any last-minute toys or supplies. Place your gift in the morning offering or in the donations box in the fellowship hall.
*Signup sheets for these are in the fellowship hall.
Through Jubilee Christmas, we not only serve others in the community, but also grow as a community of believers in the Lord. We appreciate your help - Thanks!
