June Newsletter

Pastor's Pen

As I wrote my column for last June’s newsletter it was raining. As I now prepare for my article for this June, it is raining again. On such days it is easy to imagine that it is always rainy. As we go through life, it is possible, I suppose, to only reflect on the bad things that happen to us and our world and to begin to think that the state of our lives or our world is much worse than either really is.
We are right now living geographically between two catastrophic events. One is a natural event: the eruption of volcanoes in Iceland that are disrupting air travel as I write and may continue to foul the European air for some time to come.
To our South is an oil well on the floor of the Gulf of Mexico that is pouring thousands of gallons of oil into the Gulf daily. This threatens wildlife, the shores of the Gulf and many of the jobs related to the fishing industry in the Gulf.
Any half-hour newscast will give the latest details of both of these disasters and others and leave us with the impression that only bad things are happening. We may need to remind ourselves that there are lots of good things happening. The class of 2010 has graduated from Purdue and other Universities. If past classes are any sign of what is to be, in the class of 2010 there will be some people who will do some good things for us and our world. New scientists will engage in ground-breaking research, new cures will be found, new life-saving procedures will be discovered, and new methods of communication or travel will be invented. We especially congratulate Lana and Ben Johnston and Lana’s fiancé on their graduations.
Soon, the High School Classes of 2010 will be graduating locally and across our nation. These students too will eventually go on to make a difference for us and our world. We are all especially impressed by the graduating seniors we know who are a part of Faith Church. We wish Adam, Doug, Graham, and Olivia, and the very best as they prepare to enter college in the Fall.
In addition to the promises that are in the classes of 2010, we thank God for the other ways in which his grace keeps our lives and world functioning. In the midst of the bad and even evil happenings, we see examples of the best that humans can be in stories of valor, courage, and self-sacrifice. We see parents who work and sacrifice to give their children the best starts to life possible. We see people who give up vacations to clean up the messes that others have made.
And in the midst of a world polluted by nature and by mankind, it is good to remember that God will eventually destroy and re-create this world as a part of his glorious eternal kingdom. On a dark and rainy afternoon when it seems like it has been dark and cool forever, it is good to remember that somewhere the sun is shining and that sometime soon the sun will shine here. It is also good to remember that God’s Son always shines in our lives and brings peace and joy to us through the Holy Spirit.
Diane and I rejoiced with the birth of our third grandchild on April 25th. During May we spent 3 days with him (Gideon Zechariah Horner) and his family in Red Wing Minnesota (photographs are available in the Pastor’s office). Another major milestone will occur in June when our youngest son Nathaniel moves to California to begin work with Intel. I will be helping him drive his car out there and assisting him in moving into his apartment, so I will be away on Sunday the 13th of June. Elder Steve Varys will be leading Worship and preaching on that Sunday.
I will return in time to welcome many children to our Vacation Bible School. Our VBS staff is already hard at work preparing lessons and crafts for the children in your life, so please do all you can to get them here from 9:00 to Noon on June 21st –25th. Our curriculum will be teaching some of the parables of Jesus. Please pray for our staff and our students that the love of Jesus will shine in us and on us, and that our students will lean more about our God and our Savior.
As June begins, more of us will find ourselves away from West Lafayette and Faith Church. Please remember to pray for your fellow members and please remember that our financial obligations continue even in the summer months.

Your Pastor,
Dave Horner

Mission of the Month Is Coming Soon

As you know, we at Faith church put a strong emphasis on missions and, through the deacons, we support several local and foreign mission projects. The deacons have discussed another avenue for the members of our congregation to support various worthwhile missions. We would like to try a "mission of the month" project in which all members of the congregation, from the oldest to the youngest, can be directly involved. Each month we will select a mission to support by donations brought to church throughout the month. At the end of each month whatever we have collected will be distributed to the organization we have chosen to help with specific needs. Since the children of DVBS will be collecting non-perishable food items for the food pantry at Hanna Center as their mission project, we will join them for the month of June. Please bring canned goods, cereal, pasta, rice, etc. to the church and place your items in the collection box located in
Fellowship Hall. At the end of the month the food will be taken to Hanna Center's food pantry. Looking ahead, we plan to ask for donations of school supplies during the month of July to help families supply their children with necessary back-to-school items. Please check next month's newsletter for details! If any of you have suggestions of missions we might support in this way please feel free to talk to one of the deacons. We welcome your input. Thank you all in advance for your support of this new project!

Did You Know?

“Get Healed Up” wishes to Jurgen Honig after a fall. There was some stitchery to his head, a hand that needs to heal, and some work coming up on a knee. Other than that he’s doing fine!

Three officers of the “Family Community & Career Leaders of America” at Klondike Middle School were recognized for their volunteer service the past year. One of them was our own Charlotte Sededji!

These young folks volunteered in a variety of ways, including playing bingo with residents at the Veteran’s Home, reading to preschoolers, and making dog treats for the Almost Home Humane Society. Good job!

Vacation Bible School is coming up soon. Before too long, Barb Knox or Joanne Kovacs will be calling to ask you to save up string, potato peelings, wheelbarrows or some other item to be turned into spectacular crafts. Every little bit helps.

If you haven’t been asked to help with Bible School, your name was missed somehow, so be sure to tell Barb you’ll be glad to come and help!

Your correspondent,
Nancy Dunn

Thank You!

Thank you to all the folks who came out and helped on the Spring Clean Up Day
held on Saturday, May 1st. We had an awesome turn out even though there was the threat of rain. The result was a very productive morning working both inside and outside the Church washing windows, weeding, pruning, and sprucing up the
courtyard. Thanks again for a job well done.

THE LORD IS MY SHEPHERD
A Sunday School teacher decided to have her young class memorize one of the most quoted passages in the Bible; Psalm 23. She gave the youngsters a month to learn the verse. Little Bobby was excited about the task. But, he just couldn’t remember the Psalm. After much practice, he could barely get past the first line. On the day that the kids were schedule to recited Psalm 23 in front of the congregation, Bobby was real nervous. When it was his turn, he stepped up to the microphone and said proudly, “The Lord is my shepherd and that’s all I need to know!”

Amen to that!

Clerk's Corner

At its May 10, 2010 regular meeting the Session:
• Granted a personal leave of absence to Pastor Horner for the period May 11 - 14, 2010, and for a week commencing on or after June 13, 2010
• Accepted with gratitude an anonymous gift of a computer to replace the one currently used by the Pastor, the latter unit to be placed in the church library
• Accepted the financial report for April 2010 submitted by Treasurer Gentry; while loose offering is greater than at this time in 2009, pledges are lagging. Nevertheless income and expenditures are currently in balance
• Learned that plans for the Bosler Memorial Garden are to be submitted for approval by Session in the near future
• Noted that bids have been submitted for construction of the chair lift to the library side of the church balcony
• Approved changes in the fee structure for use of church facilities for weddings and funerals
• Was informed of ceremonies for graduating seniors after morning services on May 23, 2010
• Was informed that banners had been ordered and are to be erected in early June for display of Vacation Bible School activities
• Learned that furniture for use in two Sunday school rooms is on order and that Cathy Lockwood is selecting paints for the walls
• Found out that plans for the youth program for the next academic year are being formulated through informal discussion involving Pastor Horner, Michael Bergmann, Jean McCoy, and Steven Varys
• Set June 28, 2010 as the next Session meeting; no regular meeting is scheduled for July 2010.

News of Scoti Old

On July 8th, 2009, Scoti (The Rev. Dr. Hughes Oliphant Old) received the "Lifetime Achievement Award for Liturgics" by the Calvin Quincentenary in Geneva, Switzerland." Here is how the award was expressed: "Dean of Reformed liturgical scholars in our day, for calling the church back to the sources for worship according to scripture, affirmed by the fathers and reformers: Chrysostom, Augustine, and Calvin."* The award honors exceptional scholarship and achievement, and was accepted by Terry L. Johnson of the Independent Presbyterian Curch in Savannah, Georgia.

August 27th there is to be a celebration of Scoti's "Lifetime Achievements" in Columbia, SC at The Summit Club. The seventh and last volume of his History of Preaching in the Christian Church has recently been published by Wm. B. Eerdmans Publishing Co. in Grand Rapids, MI.

Do you have a heart for young women facing an unplanned pregnancy? Have you ever wished you could provide a word of encouragement and hope in response to a phone call; or perhaps comfort a frightened young lady who has just come to the realization that her whole life is turned upside down?
If you have a loving, nonjudgmental heart and a love of the Lord, we would welcome you to consider coming for training in a volunteer capacity as a Helpline Counselor, Peer Counselor, Parenting Instructor, or in some other area.
If you feel God has called you, or you would like to explore the possibility, we would love to have you join us for our next training session in June! Please call LifeCare Services Pregnancy Center at 743-4488 for an application.

Thank You!

Thank you for your support and prayers for my family during my father's illness and since his death. We all appreciate it very much.

On a joyful note, I have celebrated reaching 1 year since my surgery. So far, all test results have been good! Thank you all for helping me get through this year, especially those first few months. Your prayers and support have been a big part of my recovery.

Thank you so much!
