June Newsletter

Pastor's Pen

Ah, it is July once again. It is time to ruminate once more on the history and freedoms of our nation. It is time for many of us to take journeys and visit friends and relatives or just get away and enjoy a change of scenery. Since many of us are associated with scholastic pursuits, some of us will also visit museums and historic sites.

And some of us will go camping. Some of you long ago signed up to participate in Faith’s camping trip on the weekend of July 17th. I hope those of you who signed up so long ago remember this commitment. If you do not remember, I think Elizabeth Fassel kept a record of those who signed up.

I am planning to join the campers on Saturday afternoon or evening for Worship. I will then lead Worship the next morning (Sunday) in Faith’s sanctuary for those of us who will not be camping.

Earlier in July, on the 4th, we will Worship God outside on the Patio (weather permitting) and have our annual Faith Church Picnic. This is always a joyful celebration of God, Summer and the birth of our nation, and I hope you will be able to join us.

I hope you will join me in praying for the General Assembly of the PC(USA) as it meets in Minneapolis from July 3rd to July 10th. I will be praying that divisive issues will be peacefully resolved and the Assembly will lead us according to God’s will and Spirit and be directed by God’s Word. Our former church member Rev. Matt Stith will be attending the GA as a voting Commissioner. I hope you will join me in praying for him as he participates in the assembly.

Last week we had our Vacation Bible School. We had 44 children registered. We also had helpers and teachers of all ages to work with the children. We had a good time teaching and thinking about the some of the Parables of Jesus. I would like to take this opportunity to thank our directors, Barb Knox and Steve Varys, for their time and excellent work and leadership. I also thank all the teachers, helpers, kitchen staff and recreation staff. VBS at Faith Church is a multi-generational effort with some of our teachers and helpers being recently and a lot less recently retired. We also had several young helpers who were recently students in our VBS. It is a wonderful thing to see people of all ages come together to help children know more about Jesus.

I may be away two Sundays in July. I do not yet know who will be leading Worship in my absence.

I will be praying for safe journeys for all of you as you travel this summer. I pray that you will be well rested and eager to join is in Worship and service to God when you return.

Have a great July!

Your Pastor,
Dave Horner

Mission of the Month

Thank you to all who contributed to June's Mission of the Month for the food pantry at Hanna Center. The DVBS kids brought lots of grocery items so that Barbara Knox was able to take a load of groceries to Hanna Center this week.

Our mission this month will help It's My Closet, an organization located near the County Fairgrounds in Lafayette which assists needy families in the area. Their mission began with clothing, but has grown to include many other things that families need. What we would like to do is help provide school supplies that children will need for going back to school. If you can pick up items while you are shopping and bring them in to church from now through Sunday, August 8th it will be a real blessing to families in need. The collection box will be in the Narthex.

Some suggested items are: loose leaf notebook paper, spiral notebooks, Fiskars 4 1/2" blunt scissors, #2 pencils, pens, 24 crayons, pink erasers, glue sticks, 4 oz. school glue, colored pencils, white soled clean gym shoes (new or used).

If everyone will bring just a few of these items over the next few weeks we will be able to make a meaningful contribution to It's My Closet. An additional need is for navy blue, black or khaki slacks or shorts for both boys and girls, all sizes either new or used. (Shorts must be finger tip length or longer.) Several of the Lafayette schools will have a new dress code which requires only these types of pants. If your children have outgrown any of these items they would be a welcome donation. Let's all get involved and see what we can do together! Thanks.

Minute for Mission

From time to time missionaries that Faith support retire or change their careers so that leaves us space and means to add a new mission.

Corey Miller has asked for our support in his mission Faculty Commons/Crusade for Christ. We asked him to come to a Deacons' meeting to give us more information, After discussion and seeking out members of our church, session and Pastor Horner, we have decided to sponsor him until the end of this year and until we take a look at our budget for 2011.

Corey is presently working on his PhD in Philosophy and Religion. He would minister to grad students and professors. It is his hope to give them a place to share their faith and to network with as many Christian professors as possible. And to begin Reading Groups and host Open Forum Discussions.

LUM Korner

If you haven’t visited LUM’s website lately I would recommend you do so and often. Exciting changes continue to take place at LUM, none the least of these is in financial reporting. A member of Faith Church asked me if LUM’s current fiscal health could be made more public. As an addition to the website you can now view last month’s statements, last year’s audit report, and federal tax filings. Thanks to the member who made this request, LUM is now more transparent to its supporters. Please let me know your comments, recommendations, concerns, and questions. Remember to visit www.lafayetteurbanministry.org and keep the work of LUM in your prayers. Ron Smith

TCCA

This month the Deacons would like to tell you more about the Theological College of Central Africa. The college was founded in 1982 and is located in Zambia. Its mission is to provide formal education for those wishing to enter full time Christian service. The college has 235 living graduates located in nine South African countries. Nearly all of these graduates continue to serve in full time Christian ministry.

Current enrollment is down somewhat to 30 students due to financial challenges borne of the global recession and changes in currency exchange rates. The college is working to complete construction of additional student housing. Upon completion, these facilities will improve the financial situation for the students and university.

Faith Presbyterian Church provides support to the College, and also to Rich and Kathy Stuebing who continue to serve as faculty there. This ministry has touched many thousands of lives through the service of its alumni.

Clerk's Corner

At its June 28, 2010 meeting the Session:
• Met with the Board of Deacons for discussions concerning their activities; after an exchange of ideas and information the Session highly approved their work
• Granted a personal leave of absence to Pastor Horner in the time frame between July 11 and August 8
• Accepted the financial report submitted by Treasurer Gentry; income and expenses are still in balance
• Learned that budgetary requests must be submitted to the Treasurer before September so that the committee in charge of budgets can prepare a draft of the 2011 budget
• Found out that the chair lift project is currently awaiting license inspectors who must approve its installment in conformity with the laws of the State of Indiana. Thereafter the chair lift has to be inspected annually
• Reviewed the activities and events of the recently completed Vacation Bible School
• Was informed that the redecoration of the education wing is now complete
• Was informed that a confirmation class is to be instituted during the upcoming academic year and that the fall term at Faith Church is to start on August 22, 2010
• Received a letter from the Board of Pensions stating that Faith Presbyterian Church continues to be granted Relief of Conscience status
• Set August 16, 2010 as the date for the next Session meeting
