August Newsletter

Pastor's Pen

Summer continues at Faith Church. And it has been a rather warm one. We have been fortunate to have some great musical talent fill in the choir spots during worship. Although we do miss our choir, change is often good. I thank those of you who have “filled in” during the summer and those who have asked others to visit us and share their talents with us.

My summer travels are nearly at an end. In June I traveled to Pittsburgh to bring daughter Joanna and grandson Gus to West Lafayette for a visit. Then I helped son Nathaniel move to California. This fulfilled my longtime desire to drive the rest of the way across the Country. During vacations in July Diane and I rode tourist trains in Connersville, IN and Noblesville, IN. We also visited the Indiana Dunes and Holland Michigan. Soon we will travel to Minnesota and visit son Jeremy and his family and bring granddaughter Lynn back with us for a short visit.

I know that many of you have been traveling this summer because I have missed seeing you and talking to you after worship. I will be glad when you all return.

During July, we had our first-in-a-long-time Faith Camping Excursion. About 25 of us traveled to Shades State Park and camped for a night. We had good conversations with each other, hiked some of the trails, Worshipped on Saturday evening, then most of us left for home before Saturday night. I think that a good time was had by all, in spite of the heat we experienced that weekend. I would like to thank Elizabeth and Adam Fassel for organizing this wonderful trip for us.

Earlier in July we had Worship on the patio on July 4th. That service was followed by a fantastic cook-out & carry-in dinner. The food was great. The fellowship was priceless. The children enjoyed outside games provided by some of our caring adults and teenagers. I thank those who prepared food, provided games for the children, and prepared for and cleaned up after the dinner.

During my time away in July Clerk of Session Jurgen Honig led Worship and preached on June 11th and Elder Nancy Dunn did the same on July 25th. I thank them for their help.

On August 8th Elder Steve Varys will preach and lead Worship.

August will also be a time for starting some of our Autumn-Winter-Spring programs. Sunday School will begin on August 22nd. The Thursday Evening Bible Study will begin at 7:00 on August 26th at the Horner’s.

Similarly, many of you will be resuming some of your professional duties in August. I am praying that this will be a great professional/academic year for you and that God will present some marvelous opportunities to serve Him during this year.
Have a great August!

Your Pastor,
Dave Horner

Mission of the Month

The Blyths in Nigeria

The deacons at Faith began supporting Mike and Barb shortly after their first trip to Nigeria in 1991.Just this past May, the Blyths visited Faith Church and delighted us with a Sunday School presentation of their work and life in Nigeria . They are still serving in Nigeria with SIM (Serving in Mission) and their positions have varied along with the changing needs of the Nigerians and SIM. Mike's mission began as the only pediatrician serving the sick children at Evangel hospital . The hospital has since become a major teaching hospital and is now among the top hospitals in the country for children with HIV/AIDS. Mike has also become skilled in the technology/computer arena and is serving SIM in that roll. He also provides his expertise to the security committee in promoting communication between missionaries during periods of political unrest in Nigeria. Barb and Mike have fostered many Nigerian children and have been advocates for promoting infant care . Presently, they are seeking to officially adopt Luke, an infant who came to them 1999 and who they have nurtured since that time. The Blyths have a web site and would welcome your communication and your prayers. The email address is: mike.blyth@sim.org.

4th of JULY THANK YOU

A GREAT BIG THANK YOU for all those helping with the 4TH of July Picnic. Kathy McKinnis and Diane Horner with a bit of help from Jan Hem, planned, bought the hotdogs and supplies for the gourmet condiment bar, and decorated inside the Fellowship Hall and outside on the Patio. Ron Smith brought his grill and cooked the hotdogs. Dave McKinnis and Dan Trinkle set up the slip and slide. And the Congregational Life Committee added helping hands for set up and clean up. All this loving energy came from these wonderful people who had just finished manning a glorious Vacation Bible School.
THANK YOU AGAIN!

CASE MANAGERS
Lafayette Urban Ministry volunteer case managers meet with guests and complete an information form to determine their current health, employment, housing and government benefit status. The case manager and guests set goals and meet every two weeks to check and document progress. Volunteers distribute resource information; collect required data, aid in applying for benefits, and help with resumes and housing applications. Case managers meet with clients at our main office during normal office hours. Training is provided. Contact Joyce Fasani at 423-2691.

AFTER SCHOOL PROGRAM
It is back-to-school time and LUM’s After School Program is expanding in its newly remodeled facility. Volunteers are needed, especially to drive a van. Contact Cindy Haley at 423-2691.

Have you ever wondered about the Prophet Isaiah?

Ladies: What do you know about the Prophet Isaiah, other than he was probably the greatest of the Old Testament prophets! His name means Salvation of Jehovah. In his book, he gives warning to Israel to repent of their sins, and he predicts of our Lord’s birth and death. It is truly a remarkable book, one that is often quoted, and now you can personally get to know this great book.
Come and join us at Bible Study Fellowship, Kossuth Street Baptist Church, September 16, at 9:15 AM for an intense 30 week study of Isaiah and his prophesies. Bible Study Fellowship is an interdenominational Bible Study, with over 300 women seeking God’s truth in their lives. There will be no child care that day, but there is a Children’s program, (the children will be studying Isaiah as well) from birth to Kindergarten age.
If you have any questions, you can ask Nancy Dunn, Carol Gentry, Peggy Housley, Vickie Kennell, Jean McCoy, Kathy Trinkle, and MaryLou Varys.

DID YOU KNOW?

It’s vacation time. Of course, you knew that. Faith folk are journeying near and far. Jurgin Honig has forced himself to go on vacation (with his wife Jo). He insists he does not favor the indulgent lifestyle of the rich and famous (nor the poor and obscure) and he is to be admired for bowing to tradition. In the meantime, his New Testament Greek class has been puzzling over liquid verbs.

Mary Lou Varys decided she no longer wanted to provide a safe and comfortable home for her appendix, and it is gone. What will she discard next? (Inquiring minds—and Steve—would also like to know.) Stay tuned. There’s always something exciting going on in the Varys household!

If you’ve had a birthday in the past several months, no doubt you’ve been wished “Happy Birthday” in song by our mystery caller. She enjoys the opportunity immensely and takes no offense with comments about her singing (dulcet tones, wafting in the summer breeze). But remember, she does know how old you are …

The Annual Fourth of July Worship in the Sun and Family Picnic Inside and Outside With Optional Slip ‘n Slide Event was a bug big hit. Your correspondent does not remember all the helpers (thousands) but they are thanked profusely anyhow. Especially popular again this year were the splendid Haute Dogs prepared and served by Chef Papa Ron.

The accessories bar (condiments and such) was designed and prepared by Cathy McKinnis and what fixin’s! The possibilities included combinations eaten in different parts of our country. There were several arguments about which Haute Dog was the best (I favored the Yuppie from San Francisco with guacamole and sprouts—YUM—). Another favorite was the Seattle Do with cream cheese and fried onion rings. Some spiffy Haute Dogs!

Congratulations to Lana Johnston on passing her exam to become a registered nurse!

Your correspondent,
N. Dunn

Flowers on Sundays

Could you bring flowers for the sanctuary some Sunday morning? It could be in honor of a special person, or just because.

If you are interested, please contact Donna Lofgren.
