The Order for the Worship of God

Faith Presbyterian Church 9:30 a.m., August 8, 2010
Let the first tone of the organ be a call to quiet meditation in which all may become aware of God’s presence, and lift up a prayer for yourself and for Faith Church.

Prelude Barcarolle (Gondolier’s song) A. Rubinstein

O Jesus, Thou Art Standing Sharon Rogers

O Jesus, Thou art standing outside the fast-closed door,
In lowly patience waiting to pass the threshold o'er.
Shame on us, Christian brothers, His name and sign who bear,
O Shame, thrice shame upon us, to keep Him standing there!

"Behold, I stand at the door and knock; if any man hear my voice, and open the door, I will come in to him........." (Revelation 3:20)

Welcome and Greeting

Hymn # 246 Come, Thou Almighty King
(Gray Psalter Hymnal)

Psalter: Psalm 133 NRSV (read responsively) Grieke Toebes
1How very good and pleasant it is when kindred live together in unity!
2It is like the precious oil on the head, running down upon the beard, on the beard of Aaron, running down over the collar of his robes.
3It is like the dew of Hermon, which falls on the mountains of Zion. For there the Lord ordained his blessing, life forevermore.

Prayer for Illumination Grieke Toebes

First Lesson: Deuteronomy 5: 26 - 33 NRSV Grieke Toebes
26For who is there of all flesh that has heard the voice of the living God speaking out of fire, as we have, and remained alive? 27Go near, you yourself, and hear all that the Lord our God will say. Then tell us everything that the Lord our God tells you, and we will listen and do it.” 28The Lord heard your words when you spoke to me, and the Lord said to me: “I have heard the words of this people, which they have spoken to you; they are right in all that they have spoken. 29If only they had such a mind as this, to fear me and to keep all my commandments always, so that it might go well with them and with their children forever! 30Go say to them, ‘Return to your tents.’ 31But you, stand here by me, and I will tell you all the commandments, the statutes and the ordinances, that you shall teach them, so that they may do them in the land that I am giving them to possess.” 32You must therefore be careful to do as the Lord your God has commanded you; you shall not turn to the right or to the left. 33You must follow exactly the path that the Lord your God has commanded you, so that you may live, and that it may go well with you, and that you may live long in the land that you are to possess.

Lector: “This is the Word of God.”

Congregation: “Thanks be to God for His Word.”

Children’s Sermon

Hymn # 21 Jesus, the Very Thought of Thee
(Green Supplemental Hymnal)
Second Lesson: I John 3: 1 - 3 NRSV
1See what love the Father has given us, that we should be called children of God; and that is what we are. The reason the world does not know us is that it did not know him. 2Beloved, we are God’s children now; what we will be has not yet been revealed. What we do know is this: when he is revealed, we will be like him, for we will see him as he is. 3And all who have this hope in him purify themselves, just as he is pure.

Sermon “Seeing Jesus” Steve Varys

Offertory Lord Jesus Christ, Be Present Now
Johann Walther (Germany, 1684-1748)

Praise, my soul, the King of heaven,

Hymn # 22 Love Divine, All Loves Excelling
(Green Supplemental Hymnal)

Benediction

Postlude Prelude and Fughetta
Healey Willan (Canada, 1880-1968)

Worship
…is the quickening of conscience by God’s holiness;
the nourishment of mind with His truth;
the purifying of imagination by His beauty;
the opening of the heart to His love;
the surrender of the will to His purpose;
and all of this gathered up in adoration—
the most selfless emotion of which our nature is capable, and therefore the chief remedy for that self-centeredness which is our original sin and the source of all actual sin.” -William Temple
