September Newsletter
Patsor's Pen
The end of summer is near. At least officially. For some of us it is already over, although temperatures are still expected to reach the ninety’s occasionally this month. Even though we have not yet celebrated Labor Day, most of our Autumn/Winter programs have begun at Faith Church.
Sunday School is back in session. Our current teachers are: Mayfawny Bergmann, Sue Ann Bergmann, Deb Johnson, Mark Johnson, Cathy Mckinnis, Grace Sededji, and Glenn Sparks. Amber Pond is providing music for closing exercises.
Some time in October, I will begin teaching the Middle School/High School Class. We will be using the Communicants or Commissioning curriculum, which will be helpful in preparing our young people to join the church and/or becoming baptized. At the conclusion of our time together (in the Spring) each student will decide if they want to at that time become church members.
Until I begin my time with the teenagers in October, I will be teaching the Adult Class. We will be studying the novel “The Shack”, which deals a little with some theological doctrines, but mostly with the ways God works in our lives and sometimes uses tragedies to bring us closer to Him and give us a better understanding of Him. There is still time to join us as we study this book.
In preparation for Sunday School, some of our “Church Ladies” and Sunday School teachers have been cleaning out and up our Sunday School rooms and Christian Education wing. I encourage you to take a walk down that hallway and see how nice it looks.
The Thursday Evening Bible Study has resumed meeting at the Horner’s house. We are continuing our Study of Luke with chapter 15 and you are welcome to join us.
The Sunday evening Bible Study has also started to meet again. We are currently meeting at the Moore’s and David Moore is leading us in a study of the 10 Commandments.
There is no Faith Youth Group meeting this fall. Most of our previous Youth Group graduated from High School last May. We will restructure our youth program as some of our younger people move into the High Schools.
Not having a Youth Group this September does present us with a question. The LUM Hunger Hike will be held on September 19th. In past years, the Youth Group was our hiking team. This year we need to find some new Hunger Hikers. We will be recruiting from all ages. Let me know if you are interested in walking in the Hunger Hike as part of the team from Faith Church.
As we begin September, we will be once again celebrating Labor Day. As you do so, I encourage you to offer prayers for those who can no longer work, and especially for those who would love to work but cannot find employment in our current economy. Time is tough for some of our fellow citizens, neighbors, and friends. I hope you will be willing to reach out and help some of them if you can.
I am glad that many of you have returned from vacations and are back Worshipping weekly at Faith Church. As vacations have ended, please remember to pray often for the little ones who are beginning another School Year, especially those who are a part of our church.
I continue to pray for all of you, that God’s blessings will be upon you and that He will draw you closer to Him and His people.
Have a good September!
Your Pastor,
Dave Horner

Help!
The Evangelism Committee needs your help. We need members to help us plan activities and we need Cookie Patrol Volunteers. The Cookie Patrol makes home-made goodies to distribute to first-time visitors and hands them out at the end of each service. The commitment is for one Sunday per month or less if that is too much. We could even use some fill-in help on occasion. The committee meets no more than once a month and really needs to be restocked. Most of our members have committees of their own and need to be relieved of their duties on Evangelism. If you are willing to help out, please contact Dave Stith at dstith@lsc.k12.in.us
CWU Food Pantry at Hannah Center
Six of our members volunteered to help at the Church Women United's Food Pantry on
August 10, 12, & 13.
A big thank you to Peggy Housley, Grieke Toebes, Polly Tyler, Kathy Bowker, Nancy Moore and Marilyn Hinze for giving their time to help others.
Our church will be called upon again in December for assistance - if you would like to help at that time please contact Marilyn Hinze and she will gladly add your name to the list.
Feel free to work with the spacing etc. of the above - any question give me a call.........Thanks again

Did You Know?
Restaurants are full, so are parking lots; there's (loud) music in the air; the constant babble of flip-flops; the merry cling-clang of the cash register: Yep, the students are back! And that's a good thing for our community. Each fall with the arrival of the students:
(1) We exercise our long term memory as we (politely) alert students in cars about the various ways they are violating Indiana's driving laws.
(2) We recall that patience is a virtue as we stand in lines awaiting some service; (3) We remember when our children, nieces, nephews, were students and what wonderful students they were!
(4) We are thankful that those young people graduated and moved on.
(5) We appreciate the teachers who do their best in classrooms, from kindergarten to Ph.D.
(5) We do our best to convince students that people over 30 are responsible, capable, interested in them, and ... are not memory-impaired.
In other news:
CONGRATULATIONS AND RECOGNITION to Mickey Latour on his promotion to professor, Animal Sciences. Salute!
CONGRATULATIONS AND JOB-WELL-DONE commendations to Tom Van Horn on his retirement from the Lafayette Redevelopment Department after 20 years of hard word. Sleep in a bit, Tom!
CONGRATULATIONS AND A RESPECTFUL WOW to Michael Bergmann and Patrick Kain upon receiving a substantial award from the John Templeton Foundation. Their work will include a 2011 summer seminar, a conference in 2012, a book, «Perceptual, Moral and Regligious Skepticism» and postconference publications. The conference and seminar will include scholars from philosophy, theology, psychology and cognitive science.
Mike Bergmann says, «Commitment to moral and religious beliefs is deep and central to people's lives, yet these same people sometimes have serious doubts about these beliefs.» Pat Kain adds, «We aim to stimulate more fruitful dialogue
between philosophers and theologians on questions of moral and religious knowledge, and we believe that serious exchange with others, including psychologists and cognitive scientists, will be of mutual benefit.»
And finally, last but not least:
CONGRATULATIONS TO AARON SANDEL AND HIS CAT FREDDY.
Freddy won a champion ribbon at the County Fair cat show. The judge said Freddy had really «star quality» markings, «perfect athletic body build,» and «beautiful mint green eyes with great black eyeliner.»
Family members say they knew Freddy was sweet, but now he's a star. Aaron did a really good job of showing him and answering questions. Not bad for a cat that just jumped in the car with Tammy one day while she was talking to her neighbor!
Good job, Aaron!

Have you ever wondered about the Prophet Isaiah?
Ladies: What do you know about the Prophet Isaiah, other than he was probably the greatest of the Old Testament prophets! His name means Salvation of Jehovah. In his book, he gives warning to Israel to repent of their sins, and he predicts of our Lord’s birth and death. It is truly a remarkable book, one that is often quoted, and now you can personally get to know this great book.
Come and join us at Bible Study Fellowship, Kossuth Street Baptist Church, September 16, at 9:15 AM for an intense 30 week study of Isaiah and his prophesies. Bible Study Fellowship is an interdenominational Bible Study, with over 300 women seeking God’s truth in their lives. There will be no child care that day, but there is a Children’s program, (the children will be studying Isaiah as well) from birth to Kindergarten age.
If you have any questions, you can ask Nancy Dunn, Carol Gentry, Peggy Housley, Vickie Kennell, Jean McCoy, Kathy Trinkle, and MaryLou Varys.
Presbyterian Habitat House 2011
For the past 11 years, the Presbyterian churches in Tippecanoe County have joined with Habitat for Humanity of Lafayette and local partner families to build six homes. The most recent effort was completed in
September 2009, and is now the home to Steve Hobaugh and his children Emily and Jay.
This month we begin our campaign to raise funds for our seventh home. We expect to begin construction next fall and need to raise $50,000 before then. The good news is we currently have over $12,000 "escrowed"
from our build last year.
Donations can be sent directly to Habitat for Humanity of Lafayette, 420 S. 1st Street, Lafayette, IN 47906 or given directly to Daniel Trinkle. All checks should be clearly marked with "Presbyterian House" in the memo section.
Thank You
Thank you all for your great support of our project for It’s My Closet. A donation from the Deacon’s fund allowed the organizers of It’s My Closet to purchase needed items of school clothing to stock their closets for children’s back to school needs, and the donation box in the narthex was filled with paper, pencils, crayons, etc as well as clothing which we delivered in time to help supply kids with the supplies they needed to start school. The staff expressed their sincere appreciation for these unexpected gifts from the people of Faith Church! It’s My Closet was open for 90 minutes two afternoons the week before school started and served 65 families during that time. They provided 84 children with articles of clothing that met the new school dress standards and 135 children with many of the school supplies they needed.
