The Order for the Worship of God

Faith Presbyterian Church 9:30 a.m., September 12, 2010
Let the first tone of the organ be a call to quiet meditation in which all may become aware of God’s presence, and lift up a prayer for yourself and for Faith Church.

Prelude Voluntary
William Selby (early American, 1738-1798)

Our Father, Thou In Heaven Above
Johann Schneider (Germany, 1702-1788)
(German Lord's Prayer)

1. Our Father, thou in heav'n above,
who biddest us to dwell in love,
As brethren of one family,
and cry for all we need to thee;
Teach us to man the words we say,
and from the inmost heart to pray.

Welcome and Greeting

Hymn # 169 I Will Sing of the Mercies of the Lord

Psalter: Psalm 89: 46 - 52 NRSV (read responsively)
Barbara Knox
46How long, O Lord? Will you hide yourself forever? How long will your wrath burn like fire?
47Remember how short my time is— for what vanity you have created all mortals!
48Who can live and never see death? Who can escape the power of Sheol?
49Lord, where is your steadfast love of old, which by your faithfulness you swore to David?
50Remember, O Lord, how your servant is taunted; how I bear in my bosom the insults of the peoples,
51with which your enemies taunt, O Lord, with which they taunted the footsteps of your anointed.
52Blessed be the Lord forever. Amen and Amen.

Prayer for Illumination Barbara Knox

First Lesson: Luke 13: 1 - 9 NRSV Barbara Knox
1At that very time there were some present who told him about the Galileans whose blood Pilate had mingled with their sacrifices. 2He asked them, “Do you think that because these Galileans suffered in this way they were worse sinners than all other Galileans? 3No, I tell you; but unless you repent, you will all perish as they did. 4Or those eighteen who were killed when the tower of Siloam fell on them—do you think that they were worse offenders than all the others living in Jerusalem? 5No, I tell you; but unless you repent, you will all perish just as they did.”
6Then he told this parable: “A man had a fig tree planted in his vineyard; and he came looking for fruit on it and found none. 7So he said to the gardener, ‘See here! For three years I have come looking for fruit on this fig tree, and still I find none. Cut it down! Why should it be wasting the soil?’ 8He replied, ‘Sir, let it alone for one more year, until I dig around it and put manure on it. 9If it bears fruit next year, well and good; but if not, you can cut it down.’”

Lector: “This is the Word of God.”

Congregation: “Thanks be to God for His Word.”

Hymn # 420 Breathe on Me Breath of God

Second Lesson: II Chronicles 12: 1 - 12 NRSV
1When the rule of Rehoboam was established and he grew strong, he abandoned the law of the Lord, he and all Israel with him. 2In the fifth year of King Rehoboam, because they had been unfaithful to the Lord, King Shishak of Egypt came up against Jerusalem 3with twelve hundred chariots and sixty thousand cavalry. A countless army came with him from Egypt—Libyans, Sukkiim, and Ethiopians. 4He took the fortified cities of Judah and came as far as Jerusalem. 5Then the prophet Shemaiah came to Rehoboam and to the officers of Judah, who had gathered at Jerusalem because of Shishak, and said to them, “Thus says the Lord: You abandoned me, so I have abandoned you to the hand of Shishak.” 6Then the officers of Israel and the king humbled themselves and said, “The Lord is in the right.” 7When the Lord saw that they humbled themselves, the word of the Lord came to Shemaiah, saying: “They have humbled themselves; I will not destroy them, but I will grant them some deliverance, and my wrath shall not be poured out on Jerusalem by the hand of Shishak. 8Nevertheless they shall be his servants, so that they may know the difference between serving me and serving the kingdoms of other lands.” 9So King Shishak of Egypt came up against Jerusalem; he took away the treasures of the house of the Lord and the treasures of the king’s house; he took everything. He also took away the shields of gold that Solomon had made; 10but King Rehoboam made in place of them shields of bronze, and committed them to the hands of the officers of the guard, who kept the door of the king’s house. 11Whenever the king went into the house of the Lord, the guard would come along bearing them, and would then bring them back to the guardroom. 12Because he humbled himself the wrath of the Lord turned from him, so as not to destroy them completely; moreover, conditions were good in Judah.

Response
The steadfast love of the Lord never ceases,
His mercies never come to an end.
They are new every morning, new every morning,
Great is Thy faithfulness, O Lord,
Great is Thy faithfulness. ∆

Worship
…is the quickening of conscience by God’s holiness;
the nourishment of mind with His truth;
the purifying of imagination by His beauty;
the opening of the heart to His love;
the surrender of the will to His purpose;
and all of this gathered up in adoration—
the most selfless emotion of which our nature is capable, and therefore the chief remedy for that self-centeredness which is our original sin and the source of all actual sin.” -William Temple
