The Order for the Worship of God

Faith Presbyterian Church	9:30 a.m., May 20, 2012
Let the first tone of the organ be a call to quiet meditation in which all may become aware of God’s presence, and lift up a prayer for yourself and for Faith Church.

Prelude O Lord Most Holy F. Abt

Adagio (from Sonata III)
Alex. Guilmant (France, 1837-1911)

Welcome

  Prayer

Confession: The Scots Confession, Ch. XI 3.11
We do not doubt but that the selfsame body which was born of the virgin, was crucified, dead, and buried, and which did rise again, did ascend into the heavens, for the accomplishment of all things, where in our name and for our comfort he has received all power in heaven and earth, where he sits at the right hand of the Father, having received his kingdom, the only advocate and mediator for us. Which glory, honor, and prerogative, he alone amongst the brethren shall possess till all his enemies are made his footstool, as we undoubtedly believe they shall be in the Last Judgment.

Hymn # 409 Hail the Day that Sees Him Rise

Psalter: Psalm 47 (read responsively) Leonard Sidharta
1Clap your hands, all you peoples; shout to God with loud songs of joy.
2For the Lord, the Most High, is awesome, a great king over all the earth.
3He subdued peoples under us, and nations under our feet.
4He chose our heritage for us, the pride of Jacob whom he loves.
5God has gone up with a shout, the Lord with the sound of a trumpet.
6Sing praises to God, sing praises; sing praises to our King, sing praises.
7For God is the king of all the earth; sing praises with a psalm.
8God is king over the nations; God sits on his holy throne.
9The princes of the peoples gather as the people of the God of Abraham. For the shields of the earth belong to God; he is highly exalted.

Prayer for Illumination Leonard Sidharta

First Lesson: I Thessalonians 4: 13 - 18 NRSV Leonard Sidharta
13But we do not want you to be uninformed, brothers and sisters, about those who have died, so that you may not grieve as others do who have no hope. 14For since we believe that Jesus died and rose again, even so, through Jesus, God will bring with him those who have died. 15For this we declare to you by the word of the Lord, that we who are alive, who are left until the coming of the Lord, will by no means precede those who have died. 16For the Lord himself, with a cry of command, with the archangel’s call and with the sound of God’s trumpet, will descend from heaven, and the dead in Christ will rise first. 17Then we who are alive, who are left, will be caught up in the clouds together with them to meet the Lord in the air; and so we will be with the Lord forever. 18Therefore encourage one another with these words.

Lector: “This is the Word of God.”

Congregation: “Thanks be to God for His Word.”

Anthem We Are Singing, for the Lord Is Our Light
Zulu Traditional Song, Arr. by Hal Hopson

Children’s Sermon

Hymn # 279 O Word of God Incarnate

Second Lesson: Acts 1: 1 – 14 NRSV
1In the first book, Theophilus, I wrote about all that Jesus did and taught from the beginning 2until the day when he was taken up to heaven, after giving instructions through the Holy Spirit to the apostles whom he had chosen. 3After his suffering he presented himself alive to them by many convincing proofs, appearing to them during forty days and speaking about the kingdom of God. 4While staying with them, he ordered them not to leave Jerusalem, but to wait there for the promise of the Father. “This,” he said, “is what you have heard from me; 5for John baptized with water, but you will be baptized with the Holy Spirit not many days from now.”
6So when they had come together, they asked him, “Lord, is this the time when you will restore the kingdom to Israel?” 7He replied, “It is not for you to know the times or periods that the Father has set by his own authority. 8But you will receive power when the Holy Spirit has come upon you; and you will be my witnesses in Jerusalem, in all Judea and Samaria, and to the ends of the earth.” 9When he had said this, as they were watching, he was lifted up, and a cloud took him out of their sight. 10While he was going and they were gazing up toward heaven, suddenly two men in white robes stood by them. 11They said, “Men of Galilee, why do you stand looking up toward heaven? This Jesus, who has been taken up from you into heaven, will come in the same way as you saw him go into heaven.”
12Then they returned to Jerusalem from the mount called Olivet, which is near Jerusalem, a sabbath day’s journey away. 13When they had entered the city, they went to the room upstairs where they were staying, Peter, and John, and James, and Andrew, Philip and Thomas, Bartholomew and Matthew, James son of Alphaeus, and Simon the Zealot, and Judas son of James. 14All these were constantly devoting themselves to prayer, together with certain women, including Mary the mother of Jesus, as well as his brothers.

Sermon “He Ascended. Now What?” Pastor David Horner

After the sermon children in grades K-6 may leave for children’s choir

Gathering of Tithes and Offerings

Offertory Jesus, Lead Thou On Paul Manz

Jesus, still lead on, 'till our rest be won;
And, although the way be cheerless,
We will follow, calm and fearless;
Guide us by thy hand to our fatherland.

When we seek relief from a long-felt grief,
When temptations come alluring, make us patient and enduring;
Show us that bright shore where we weep no more.

Response
Glory be to the Father,
And to the Son, and to the Holy Ghost;
As it was in the beginning,
Is now, and ever shall be,
World without end. Amen, Amen. Δ

Faith Presbyterian Church	9:30 a.m., May 13, 2012
Let the first tone of the organ be a call to quiet meditation in which all may become aware of God’s presence, and lift up a prayer for yourself and for Faith Church.

Prelude Abide, O Dearest Jesus
Sigfrid Karg-Elert (Germany, 1877-1933)

Ave Verum
W.A. Mozart (Germany, 1756-1792)

Jesus, Word of god incarnate, of the Virgin Mary born,
On the cross Thy sacred body for us men with nails was torn.
Cleanse us by the blood and water streaming from thy pierced side;
Feed us with thy body broken, now and in death's agony!
O Jesus, hear us, Son of Mary.

Welcome

  Prayer

Confession: II Helvetic Confession Ch. 29 5.250
And it is most certain that those works which are done by parents in true faith by way of domestic duties and the management of their households are in God’s sight holy and truly good works. They are no less pleasing to God than prayers, fasting and almsgiving. For thus the apostle has taught in his epistles, especially in those to Timothy and Titus. And with the same apostle we account the doctrine of those who forbid marriage or openly castigate or indirectly discredit it, as if it were not holy and pure, among the doctrine of demons.

Hymn # 253 Praise to the Lord, the Almighty

Psalter: Psalm 139: 1 - 18 (read responsively) Ron Smith
1O Lord, you have searched me and known me.
2You know when I sit down and when I rise up; you discern my thoughts from far away.
3You search out my path and my lying down, and are acquainted
with all my ways.
4Even before a word is on my tongue, O Lord, you know it completely.
5You hem me in, behind and before, and lay your hand upon me.
6Such knowledge is too wonderful for me; it is so high that I cannot attain it.
7Where can I go from your spirit? Or where can I flee from your presence?
8If I ascend to heaven, you are there; if I make my bed in Sheol, you are there.
9If I take the wings of the morning and settle at the farthest limits of the sea,
10even there your hand shall lead me, and your right hand shall hold me fast.
11If I say, “Surely the darkness shall cover me, and the light around me become night,”
12even the darkness is not dark to you; the night is as bright as the day, for darkness is as light to you.
13For it was you who formed my inward parts; you knit me together in my mother’s womb.
14I praise you, for I am fearfully and wonderfully made. Wonderful are your works; that I know very well.
15My frame was not hidden from you, when I was being made in secret, intricately woven in the depths of the earth.
16Your eyes beheld my unformed substance. In your book were written all the days that were formed for me, when none of them as yet existed.
17How weighty to me are your thoughts, O God! How vast is the sum of them!
18I try to count them—they are more than the sand; I come to the end—I am still with you.

Prayer for Illumination Ron Smith

First Lesson: Matthew 12: 46 - 50 NRSV Ron Smith
46While he was still speaking to the crowds, his mother and his brothers were standing outside, wanting to speak to him. 47Someone told him, “Look, your mother and your brothers are standing outside, wanting to speak to you.” 48But to the one who had told him this, Jesus replied, “Who is my mother, and who are my brothers?” 49And pointing to his disciples, he said, “Here are my mother and my brothers! 50For whoever does the will of my Father in heaven is my brother and sister and mother.”

Lector: “This is the Word of God.”

Congregation: “Thanks be to God for His Word.”

Children’s Sermon

Hymn # 586 In Our Households, Heavenly Father

Second Lesson: Judges 13: 1 - 25 NRSV
1The Israelites again did what was evil in the sight of the Lord, and the Lord gave them into the hand of the Philistines forty years. 2There was a certain man of Zorah, of the tribe of the Danites, whose name was Manoah. His wife was barren, having borne no children. 3And the angel of the Lord appeared to the woman and said to her, “Although you are barren, having borne no children, you shall conceive and bear a son. 4Now be careful not to drink wine or strong drink, or to eat anything unclean, 5for you shall conceive and bear a son. No razor is to come on his head, for the boy shall be a nazirite to God from birth. It is he who shall begin to deliver Israel from the hand of the Philistines.” 6Then the woman came and told her husband, “A man of God came to me, and his appearance was like that of an angel of God, most awe-inspiring; I did not ask him where he came from, and he did not tell me his name; 7but he said to me, ‘You shall conceive and bear a son. So then drink no wine or strong drink, and eat nothing unclean, for the boy shall be a nazirite to God from birth to the day of his death.’”
8Then Manoah entreated the Lord, and said, “O, Lord, I pray, let the man of God whom you sent come to us again and teach us what we are to do concerning the boy who will be born.” 9God listened to Manoah, and the angel of God came again to the woman as she sat in the field; but her husband Manoah was not with her. 10So the woman ran quickly and told her husband, “The man who came to me the other day has appeared to me.” 11Manoah got up and followed his wife, and came to the man and said to him, “Are you the man who spoke to this woman?” And he said, “I am.” 12Then Manoah said, “Now when your words come true, what is to be the boy’s rule of life; what is he to do?” 13The angel of the Lord said to Manoah, “Let the woman give heed to all that I said to her. 14She may not eat of anything that comes from the vine. She is not to drink wine or strong drink, or eat any unclean thing. She is to observe everything that I commanded her.”
15Manoah said to the angel of the Lord, “Allow us to detain you, and prepare a kid for you.” 16The angel of the Lord said to Manoah, “If you detain me, I will not eat your food; but if you want to prepare a burnt offering, then offer it to the Lord.” (For Manoah did not know that he was the angel of the Lord.) 17Then Manoah said to the angel of the Lord, “What is your name, so that we may honor you when your words come true?” 18But the angel of the Lord said to him, “Why do you ask my name? It is too wonderful.” 19So Manoah took the kid with the grain offering, and offered it on the rock to the Lord, to him who works wonders. 20When the flame went up toward heaven from the altar, the angel of the Lord ascended in the flame of the altar while Manoah and his wife looked on; and they fell on their faces to the ground. 21The angel of the Lord did not appear again to Manoah and his wife. Then Manoah realized that it was the angel of the Lord. 22And Manoah said to his wife, “We shall surely die, for we have seen God.” 23But his wife said to him, “If the Lord had meant to kill us, he would not have accepted a burnt offering and a grain offering at our hands, or shown us all these things, or now announced to us such things as these.”
24The woman bore a son, and named him Samson. The boy grew, and the Lord blessed him. 25The spirit of the Lord began to stir him in Mahaneh-dan, between Zorah and Eshtaol.

The Order for the Worship of God

Faith Presbyterian Church 9:30 a.m., May 6, 2012
Let the first tone of the organ be a call to quiet mediation in which all may become aware of God’s presence, and lift up a prayer for yourself and for Faith Church.

Prelude All Glory Be To God On High (4 settings) (words in gray hymnal, p. 247) Raymond Haan

Welcome

Hymn # 91 AS the Deer Panteth for the Water
(Green Supplemental Hymnal)

Prayer of Confession – front of gray hymnal

Prayer for Illumination Bert Chapman

First Lesson: II Chronicles 28: 1 - 7 NRSV Bert Chapman
1Ahaz was twenty years old when he began to reign; he reigned sixteen years in Jerusalem. He did not do what was right in the sight of the Lord, as his ancestor David had done, 2but he walked in the ways of the kings of Israel. He even made cast images for the Baals; 3and he made offerings in the valley of the son of Hinnom, and made his sons pass through fire, according to the abominable practices of the nations whom the Lord drove out before the people of Israel. 4He sacrificed and made offerings on the high places, on the hills, and under every green tree. 5Therefore the Lord his God gave him into the hand of the king of Aram, who defeated him and took captive a great number of his people and brought them to Damascus. He was also given into the hand of the king of Israel, who defeated him with great slaughter.
6Pekah son of Remaliah killed one hundred twenty thousand in Judah in one day, all of them valiant warriors, because they had abandoned the Lord, the God of their ancestors. 7And Zichri, a mighty warrior of Ephraim, killed the king’s son Maaseiah, Azrikam the commander of the palace, and Elkanah the next in authority to the king.

Lector: “This is the Word of God.”

Congregation: “Thanks be to God for His Word.”

Anthem Come, Share the Lord Arr. by Ronald Tabell

Children’s Sermon

Hymn # 262 My Faith Looks Up to Thee

Second Lesson: John 15: 1 - 8 NRSV
1”I am the true vine, and my Father is the vinegrower. 2He removes every branch in me that bears no fruit. Every branch that bears fruit he prunes to make it bear more fruit. 3You have already been cleansed by the word that I have spoken to you. 4Abide in me as I abide in you. Just as the branch cannot bear fruit by itself unless it abides in the vine, neither can you unless you abide in me. 5I am the vine, you are the branches. Those who abide in me and I in them bear much fruit, because apart from me you can do nothing. 6Whoever does not abide in me is thrown away like a branch and withers; such branches are gathered, thrown into the fire, and burned. 7If you abide in me, and my words abide in you, ask for whatever you wish, and it will be done for you. 8My Father is glorified by this, that you bear much fruit and become my disciples.

Sermon “Branching Out?” Pastor David Horner

Gathering of Tithes and Offerings

Offertory Gott der Vater wohn uns bei
Dietrich Buxtehude (Germany, 1637-1707)

God the Father, be our stay, O let us perish never!
Cleanse us from our sins, we pray,
And grant us life forever.
Keep us from the evil One; Uphold our faith most holy,
Grant us to trust Thee solely
With humble hearts ad lowly.
Let us put God's armor on,
with all true christians running
Our heavenly race, and shunning
the devil's wiles and cunning.
Amen, Amen, this be done; So sing we, Hallelujah!

Response
Glory be to the Father,
And to the Son, and to the Holy Ghost;
As it was in the beginning,
Is now, and ever shall be,
World without end. Amen, Amen. Δ

Hymn # 302 In the Quiet Consecration

The Lord’s Supper
Invitation
Words of Institution: I Corinthians 11: 23 - 26 NRSV
In Unison
23For I received from the Lord what I also handed on to you, that the Lord Jesus on the night when he was betrayed took a loaf of bread, 24and when he had given thanks, he broke it and said, “This is my body that is for you. Do this in remembrance of me.” 25In the same way he took the cup also, after supper, saying, “This cup is the new covenant in my blood. Do this, as often as you drink it, in remembrance of me.” 26For as often as you eat this bread and drink the cup, you proclaim the Lord’s death until he comes.

  Prayer of Thanksgiving
Giving and receiving of the Bread and Cup
The inside cups are white grape juice;
the outer cups contain wine.

Prayer of Consecration
Almighty Lord: we are thankful for all the benefits given us in this bread and wine, this body and blood. As the grain was harvested and the grapes gathered for this food, so may your church in every place be gathered into your household. And as the grain was ground and the grapes crushed, so may our lives be spent in your service, until you return in triumph to gather to yourself the harvest and call us to the marriage feast of the lamb. Amen.

Hymn # 319 Savior to Your Dear Name We Raise

Benediction

Postlude Built On The Rock Paul Manz

Faith Presbyterian Church	9:30 a.m., April 29, 2012
Let the first tone of the organ be a call to quiet meditation in which all may become aware of God’s presence, and lift up a prayer for yourself and for Faith Church.

Prelude In Christ There Is No East Or West P.P. Stearns
(words in hymnbook, p. 540)

                                     Jesus Shall Reign Raymond Haan

Welcome

  Prayer

Confession: Westminster Confession of Faith: XXXV 4 6.190
Since there is no other way of salvation than that revealed in the gospel, and since in the divinely established and ordinary method of grace faith cometh by hearing the Word of God, Christ hath commissioned his Church to go into all the world and to make disciples of all nations. All believers are, therefore, under obligation to sustain the ordinance of the Christian religion where they are already established, and to contribute by their prayers, gifts, and personal efforts to the extension of the Kingdom of Christ throughout the whole earth.

Hymn # 6 Joyful, Joyful, We Adore Thee
(Green Supplemental Hymnal)

Psalter: Psalm 105: 7 - 22 (read responsively) Terry Stewart
7He is the Lord our God; his judgments are in all the earth.
8He is mindful of his covenant forever, of the word that he commanded, for a thousand generations,
9the covenant that he made with Abraham, his sworn promise to Isaac,
10which he confirmed to Jacob as a statute, to Israel as an everlasting covenant,
11saying, “To you I will give the land of Canaan as your portion for an inheritance.”
12When they were few in number, of little account, and strangers in it,
13wandering from nation to nation, from one kingdom to another people,
14he allowed no one to oppress them; he rebuked kings on their account,
15saying, “Do not touch my anointed ones; do my prophets no harm.”
16When he summoned famine against the land, and broke every staff of bread,
17he had sent a man ahead of them, Joseph, who was sold as a slave.
18His feet were hurt with fetters, his neck was put in a collar of iron;
19until what he had said came to pass, the word of the Lord kept testing him.
20The king sent and released him; the ruler of the peoples set him free.
21He made him lord of his house, and ruler of all his possessions,
22to instruct his officials at his pleasure, and to teach his elders wisdom.

Prayer for Illumination Terry Stewart

First Lesson: I John 3: 16 - 24 NRSV Terry Stewart
16We know love by this, that he laid down his life for us—and we ought to lay down our lives for one another. 17How does God’s love abide in anyone who has the world’s goods and sees a brother or sister in need and yet refuses help? 18Little children, let us love, not in word or speech, but in truth and action. 19And by this we will know that we are from the truth and will reassure our hearts before him
20whenever our hearts condemn us; for God is greater than our hearts, and he knows everything. 21Beloved, if our hearts do not condemn us, we have boldness before God; 22and we receive from him whatever we ask, because we obey his commandments and do what pleases him.
23And this is his commandment, that we should believe in the name of his Son Jesus Christ and love one another, just as he has commanded us. 24All who obey his commandments abide in him, and he abides in them. And by this we know that he abides in us, by the Spirit that he has given us.

Lector: “This is the Word of God.”

Congregation: “Thanks be to God for His Word.”

Anthem United in Christ! Don Besig

Children’s Sermon

Hymn # 480 Jesus, the Very Thought of You

Second Lesson: Acts 4: 5 - 22 NRSV
5The next day their rulers, elders, and scribes assembled in Jerusalem, 6with Annas the high priest, Caiaphas, John, and Alexander, and all who were of the high-priestly family. 7When they had made the prisoners stand in their midst, they inquired, “By what power or by what name did you do this?” 8Then Peter, filled with the Holy Spirit, said to them, “Rulers of the people and elders, 9if we are questioned today because of a good deed done to someone who was sick and are asked how this man has been healed, 10let it be known to all of you, and to all the people of Israel, that this man is standing before you in good health by the name of Jesus Christ of Nazareth, whom you crucified, whom God raised from the dead. 11This Jesus is ‘the stone that was rejected by you, the builders; it has become the cornerstone.’ 12There is salvation in no one else, for there is no other name under heaven given among mortals by which we must be saved.” 13Now when they saw the boldness of Peter and John and realized that they were uneducated and ordinary men, they were amazed and recognized them as companions of Jesus. 14When they saw the man who had been cured standing beside them, they had nothing to say in opposition.
15So they ordered them to leave the council while they discussed the matter with one another. 16They said, “What will we do with them? For it is obvious to all who live in Jerusalem that a notable sign has been done through them; we cannot deny it. 17But to keep it from spreading further among the people, let us warn them to speak no more to anyone in this name.” 18So they called them and ordered them not to speak or teach at all in the name of Jesus. 19But Peter and John answered them, “Whether it is right in God’s sight to listen to you rather than to God, you must judge; 20for we cannot keep from speaking about what we have seen and heard.” 21After threatening them again, they let them go, finding no way to punish them because of the people, for all of them praised God for what had happened. 22For the man on whom this sign of healing had been performed was more than forty years old.

It is Mitford Tea time!

Get your hats ready! TODAY - Sunday afternoon, April 29, at 2:00 P.M. is the Mitford Tea.
The theme for the tables this year will be BOOKS. Use your imagination to create a décor depicting favorite children’s books, classics, Bibles, mysteries, romances, gardening books, cookbooks, or any other kind of book that lights your fancy. Characters, scenery, events from the books, and collections would all make great table decorations. Be sure to sign up in the Fellowship Hall to decorate and set a table for the tea and to attend and bring your favorite tea delicacy. Remember to invite all your friends!
For the small mission this year, we will be collecting children’s books for those served at Kristin Hem’s clinic. Here is the description for what she can use:
Books would be great. We need Early Reader Books (numbers and grades usually on them, need younger grades/lower numbers, 1, 2, 3, usually listed as Pre-K to grade 3). These are relatively simple books for kids learning to read. We also get requests for early chapter books series, like Junie B. Jones, The Magic Treehouse, Goosebumps, Captain Underpants (sorry!). And, picture books for the preschool age kids are always needed. What we really don't need are chapter books for older kids/good readers. Also, we really can't take overtly religious books. It's hard to give them away, and can be awkward given our federal funding. Thanks! K :)

Faith Presbyterian Church	9:30 a.m., April 22, 2012
Let the first tone of the organ be a call to quiet meditation in which all may become aware of God’s presence, and lift up a prayer for yourself and for Faith Church.

Prelude Madrigal Louis Vierne (France, 1870-1937)

Welcome Pastor Horner

Psalter: Psalm 95: 1 - 7 (read responsively) Sophie Bergmann
1O come, let us sing to the Lord; let us make a joyful noise to the rock of our salvation!
2Let us come into his presence with thanksgiving; let us make a joyful noise to him with songs of praise!
3For the Lord is a great God, and a great King above all gods.
4In his hand are the depths of the earth; the heights of the mountains are his also.
5The sea is his, for he made it, and the dry land, which his hands have formed.
6O come, let us worship and bow down, let us kneel before the Lord, our Maker!
7For he is our God, and we are the people of his pasture, and the sheep of his hand. O that today you would listen to his voice!

The Order for the Worship of God

Faith Presbyterian Church	9:30 a.m., April 15, 2012
Let the first tone of the organ be a call to quiet meditation in which all may become aware of God’s presence, and lift up a prayer for yourself and for Faith Church.

Prelude Choral harmonization of Christ Ist Erstanden
by J.S. Bach

Contemporary arrangement of Christ Ist Erstanden
by James Pethel

Christ Ist Erstanden (Christ is Risen) is
a 12th century chant melody

Welcome

  Prayer

Hymn # 391 The Strife is O’er, the Battle Done

Psalter: Psalm 50: 7 - 23 (read responsively) Nancy Dunn
7“Hear, O my people, and I will speak, O Israel, I will testify against you. I am God, your God.
8Not for your sacrifices do I rebuke you; your burnt offerings are continually before me.
9I will not accept a bull from your house, or goats from your folds.
10For every wild animal of the forest is mine, the cattle on a thousand hills.
11I know all the birds of the air, and all that moves in the field is mine.
12“If I were hungry, I would not tell you, for the world and all that is in it is mine.
13Do I eat the flesh of bulls, or drink the blood of goats?
14Offer to God a sacrifice of thanksgiving, and pay your vows to the Most High.
15Call on me in the day of trouble; I will deliver you, and you shall glorify me.”
16But to the wicked God says: “What right have you to recite my statutes, or take my covenant on your lips?
17For you hate discipline, and you cast my words behind you.
18You make friends with a thief when you see one, and you keep company with adulterers.
19“You give your mouth free rein for evil, and your tongue frames deceit.
20You sit and speak against your kin; you slander your own mother’s child.
21These things you have done and I have been silent; you thought that I was one just like yourself. But now I rebuke you, and lay the charge before you.
22“Mark this, then, you who forget God, or I will tear you apart, and there will be no one to deliver.
23Those who bring thanksgiving as their sacrifice honor me; to those who go the right way I will show the salvation of God.”

Prayer for IlluminationNancy Dunn

First Lesson: Colossians 1: 15 - 20 NRSV Nancy Dunn
15He is the image of the invisible God, the firstborn of all creation; 16for in him all things in heaven and on earth were created, things visible and invisible, whether thrones or dominions or rulers or powers—all things have been created through him and for him. 17He himself is before all things, and in him all things hold together. 18He is the head of the body, the church; he is the beginning, the firstborn from the dead, so that he might come to have first place in everything. 19For in him all the fullness of God was pleased to dwell, 20and through him God was pleased to reconcile to himself all things, whether on earth or in heaven, by making peace through the blood of his cross.

Lector: “This is the Word of God.”

Congregation: “Thanks be to God for His Word.”

Anthem Good Christians All, Rejoice and Sing
Tune: Melchior Vulpius (1609), Text: Cyril Alington (1925)

Children’s Sermon

Hymn # 396 Low in the Grave Christ Lay

Second Lesson: Mark 12: 13 - 17 NRSV
13Then they sent to him some Pharisees and some Herodians to trap him in what he said. 14And they came and said to him, “Teacher, we know that you are sincere, and show deference to no one; for you do not regard people with partiality, but teach the way of God in accordance with truth. Is it lawful to pay taxes to the emperor, or not? 15Should we pay them, or should we not?” But knowing their hypocrisy, he said to them, “Why are you putting me to the test? Bring me a denarius and let me see it.” 16And they brought one. Then he said to them, “Whose head is this, and whose title?” They answered, “The emperor’s.” 17Jesus said to them, “Give to the emperor the things that are the emperor’s, and to God the things that are God’s.” And they were utterly amazed at him.

Sermon “Give What to Whom?” Pastor David Horner

After the sermon children in grades K-6 may leave for children’s choir

He is risen from the dead, and he is Lord
Sun., Apr. 29	Mitford Tea, 2:00 p.m.
Sun., Apr. 29	Mission Fair

Ladies,

It is Mitford Tea time!

Get your hats ready and save Sunday afternoon, April 29, at 2:00 P.M. to attend.

Be sure to sign up in the Fellowship Hall to decorate and set a table for the tea and/or to attend and bring your favorite recipe.

Thanks! K :)
Prayer of Confession – front of gray hymnal

Prayer for Illumination Michael Bergmann

First Lesson: I Corinthians 15: 1 - 8 NRSV
Michael Bergmann
1Now I would remind you, brothers and sisters, of the good news that I proclaimed to you, which you in turn received, in which also you stand, 2through which also you are being saved,
if you hold firmly to the message that I proclaimed to you—unless you have come to believe in vain. 3For I handed on to you as of first importance what I in turn had received: that Christ died for our sins in accordance with the scriptures, 4and that he was buried, and that he was raised on the third day in accordance with the scriptures, 5and that he appeared to Cephas, then to the twelve. 6Then he appeared to more than five hundred brothers and sisters at one time, most of whom are still alive, though some have died. 7Then he appeared to James, then to all the apostles. 8Last of all, as to one untimely born, he appeared also to me.

Lector: “This is the Word of God.”

Congregation: “Thanks be to God for His Word.”

Anthem (Cantata Part III) The Lord of Life Lloyd Larson

Children’s Sermon

Second Lesson: Mark 16: 1 - 8 NRSV
1When the sabbath was over, Mary Magdalene, and Mary the mother of James, and Salome bought spices, so that they might go and anoint him. 2And very early on the first day of the week, when the sun had risen, they went to the tomb. 3They had been saying to one another, “Who will roll away the stone for us from the entrance to the tomb?” 4When they looked up, they saw that the stone, which was very large, had already been rolled back. 5As they entered the tomb, they saw a young man, dressed in a white robe, sitting on the right side; and they were alarmed. 6But he said to them, “Do not be alarmed; you are looking for Jesus of Nazareth, who was crucified. He has been raised; he is not here. Look, there is the place they laid him. 7But go, tell his disciples and Peter that he is going ahead of you to Galilee; there you will see him, just as he told you.” 8So they went out and fled from the tomb, for terror and amazement had seized them; and they said nothing to anyone, for they were afraid.

Sermon “The ‘Young Man’ and the Women”
Do this in remembrance of me.” 20And he did the same with the cup after supper, saying, “This cup that is poured out for you is the new covenant in my blood.

Music Words

O Lamb Of God Most Holy
The traditional Agnus Dei has three verses. This chorale prelude has the chorale tune in the upper voice for the first voice, in the middle voice for the second verse, and in the
pedals (bass) for the third verse. Here are the words:
O Lamb of God most holy, Upon the cursed tree slain;
E'er patient, meek and lowly,
Though heaped with hate and disdain.
All sins Thou borest for us, Else had despair reigned o'er us.
Have mercy on us, Oh Jesus!

Who Is He In Yonder Stall?
Who is He in yonder stall, At whose feet the shepherds fall?
Who is He in deep distress, Fasting in the wilderness?refrain: 'Tis the Lord, O wondrous story!
'Tis the Lord, the King of glory.
At His feet we humbly fall, crown Him! crown Him, Lord of all!
Who is He that stands and weeps
at the grave where Lazarus sleeps?
Who is He the gathering throng
greet with loud triumphant song? (refrain)
Lo! at midnight, who is He Prays in dark Gethsemene?
Who is He on yonder tree Dies in grief and agony? (refrain)
Who is He that from the grave
comes to heal and help and save?
Who is He that from His throne
rules through all the world alone? (refrain)

Maundy Thursday

Faith Presbyterian Church	7:30 p.m., April 5, 2012
Let the first tone of the organ be a call to quiet meditation in which all may become aware of God’s presence, and lift up a prayer for yourself and for Faith Church.

Prelude Variations on "Wondrous Love"
Samuel Barber, Op. 34

O Sacred Head, Now Wounded
Dietrich Buxtehude (Germany, 1637-1707)

  Invocation

Hymn # 379 What Wondrous Love

Cantata Part II – Words and Music by Lloyd Larson

Man of Sorrows

	Truly This Was God’s Son

Mark 14: 12 – 16 NRSV Jurgen Honig
12On the first day of Unleavened Bread, when the Passover lamb is sacrificed, his disciples said to him, “Where do you want us to go and make the preparations for you to eat the Passover?” 13So he sent two of his disciples, saying to them, “Go into the city, and a man carrying a jar of water will meet you; follow him, 14and wherever he enters, say to the owner of the house, ‘The Teacher asks, Where is my guest room where I may eat the Passover with my disciples?’ 15He will show you a large room upstairs, furnished and ready. Make preparations for us there.” 16So the disciples set out and went to the city, and found everything as he had told them; and they prepared the Passover meal.

Hymn # 482 Man of Sorrows – What A Name

Mark 14: 17 – 25 NRSV Jerry Matthews
17When it was evening, he came with the twelve. 18And when they had taken their places and were eating, Jesus said, “Truly I tell you, one of you will betray me, one who is eating with me.” 19They began to be distressed and to say to him one after another, “Surely, not I?” 20He said to them, “It is one of the twelve, one who is dipping bread into the bowl with me.
21For the Son of Man goes as it is written of him, but woe to that one by whom the Son of Man is betrayed! It would have been better for that one not to have been born.”
22While they were eating, he took a loaf of bread, and after blessing it he broke it, gave it to them, and said, “Take; this is my body.” 23Then he took a cup, and after giving thanks he gave it to them, and all of them drank from it. 24He said to them, “This is my blood of the covenant, which is poured out for many. 25Truly I tell you, I will never again drink of the fruit of the vine until that day when I drink it new in the kingdom of God.”

Hymn # 386 Ah, Holy Jesus, How Have You Offended

Mark 14: 26 - 42 NRSV Steve Varys
26When they had sung the hymn, they went out to the Mount of Olives. 27And Jesus said to them, “You will all become deserters; for it is written,
‘I will strike the shepherd,
and the sheep will be scattered.’
28But after I am raised up, I will go before you to Galilee.” 29Peter said to him, “Even though all become deserters, I will not.” 30Jesus said to him, “Truly I tell you, this day, this very night, before the cock crows twice, you will deny me three times.” 31But he said vehemently, “Even though I must die with you, I will not deny you.” And all of them said the same.
32They went to a place called Gethsemane; and he said to his disciples, “Sit here while I pray.” 33He took with him Peter and James and John, and began to be distressed and agitated. 34And he said to them, “I am deeply grieved, even to death; remain here, and keep awake.” 35And going a little farther, he threw himself on the ground and prayed that, if it were possible, the hour might pass from him. 36He said, “Abba, Father, for you all things are possible; remove this cup from me; yet, not what I want, but what you want.” 37He came and found them sleeping; and he said to Peter, “Simon, are you asleep? Could you not keep awake one hour? 38Keep awake and pray that you may not come into the time of trial; the spirit indeed is willing, but the flesh is weak.” 39And again he went away and prayed, saying the same words. 40And once more he came and found them sleeping, for their eyes were very heavy; and they did not know what to say to him. 41He came a third time and said to them, “Are you still sleeping and taking your rest? Enough! The hour has come; the Son of Man is betrayed into the hands of sinners. 42Get up, let us be going. See, my betrayer is at hand.”

Hymn # 381 Go to Dark Gethsemane

Mark 14: 43 – 50 NRSV Ron Smith
43Immediately, while he was still speaking, Judas, one of the twelve, arrived; and with him there was a crowd with swords and clubs, from the chief priests, the scribes, and the elders. 44Now the betrayer had given them a sign, saying, “The one I will kiss is the man; arrest him and lead him away under guard.” 45So when he came, he went up to him at once and said, “Rabbi!” and kissed him. 46Then they laid hands on him and arrested him. 47But one of those who stood near drew his sword and struck the slave of the high priest, cutting off his ear. 48Then Jesus said to them, “Have you come out with swords and clubs to arrest me as though I were a bandit? 49Day after day I was with you in the temple teaching, and you did not arrest me. But let the scriptures be fulfilled.” 50All of them deserted him and fled.

Pastor's Pen

I have many things to write about this April. I will start with the most important news first: Easter is coming! Easter is the most important Christian Holiday, as it is the celebration of the great victory of Jesus over death. Easter will be celebrated this year on April 8th. Here at Faith our Easter service will begin at 9:30 and will include the Sacrament of the Lord’s Supper and special anthems by the Choir. After the Service, we will have our Easter Brunch in Fellowship Hall and an Easter Egg Hunt for the children.
During the week before Easter we will also have our traditional Holy Week services: a Maundy Thursday Communion Service at 7:30 and a Good Friday Service at Noon and 7:00 PM.
The Choir is offering to the Lord a Cantata in three parts during the Easter Season It will begin on Palm Sunday, continue on Maundy Thursday, and conclude on Easter.
We have two other special events planned to occur later in April. On April 22nd we will celebrate Youth Sunday. That Sunday our young people will be leading Worship. Our two Graduating Seniors (Mayfawny Bergmann and Grace Sededji) will be delivering the Sermon and the rest of the young people will have other parts in the Worship Service.

And on April 29th, the Board of Deacons will present their annual Missions Fair. The Missions Fair will be held in Fellowship Hall after Worship during the Coffee Time and Sunday School time. Sunday School will still meet that day. This Missions Fair will feature presentations by and about the Missions that Faith Church sponsors. Some are local, some are from much farther away.
Since it is still Spring, and not too long ago we set our clocks forward to Daylight Savings Time, I will now call your attention to an issue of “timing”. Our Organist, Marilyn Sameh has joined a drive to put Indiana on Central Time rather than Eastern Time. If you wish to join her in this, she has a petition that you may sign. (Please do not ask her for it while she is so capably playing the organ during Worship!)
And now about our most recent news. We (Faith Presbyterian Church) are no longer a part of the PC(USA). At a called or special meeting of the congregation on March 25th, the congregation voted unanimously to disaffiliate from the PC(USA). This was in response to a unanimous motion to do so from the Session. The motion approved is in the form of a Resolution which you will find printed in another place in this newsletter.
I only want to say two things about all this at the present time. First of all, while we are currently free from all denominational connections, we do plan to enter another Presbyterian Denomination. We are Presbyterians and Presbyterianism is a connectional form of government, so we need other congregations to be connected to in order to be truly Presbyterian. Our new denomination will be much more in alignment with our Reform Christian beliefs and much less strife-ridden than the Presbyterian Church (USA) had become. We do not feel that we left the PC(USA), we are convinced that over the last 20 years or so the PC(USA) had left us. Some time in the future our members will have the opportunity to approve a new denominational affiliation.
The other thing I want to say about our current situation is that while we are clear and free from the PC(USA) our property may not be. To put it simply, while we believe that our church building and property belong to us, the PCUSA and the Presbytery of Wabash Valley may believe they own the building and property. The Session has appointed a team of people to negotiate with the Presbytery to resolve any disagreement over the property. (The Session was authorized to do so by the congregation when they passed the resolution.)
I am certain that we will have more to say about all this in future editions of the newsletter and others may have more information in other articles in this edition. But I am finished for now, and after once more reminding you of and inviting you to our special services on Maundy Thursday, Good Friday, and Easter, I will sign off as

Mission of the Month

Thank you for your wonderful support of our most recent Mission of the Month. We were able to deliver 48 boxes of cereal and 32 jars of peanut butter to Westminster Village where the backpacks are packed for Klondike school children to take home with food for the weekend. The people running the "Backpack Program" for Klondike were very appreciative of these donations which are items they generally do not have to distribute.

Let's keep up the good work with the next monthly mission which will benefit Life Care Services, one of the missions that our church supports on a regular basis. They have informed Mary Lou Varys that they are in need of "swaddles" which new mothers need for their babies. Mary Lou will have baby dolls dressed in swaddles near the collection box so that those of us who don't know exactly what to look for will have some guidance! She will also provide information about where they can be purchased and how much they cost. After Easter take a look and then help us provide for new babies whose moms look for help and guidance from Life Care. We will be collecting through mid-May.

Summary of Action by the Congregation of Faith Presbyterian Church at the Called Congregational Meeting of March 25, 2012
Approximately 70 people were in attendance, with Pastor Horner as the moderator. Attendees were provided with a written statement of the Resolution for disaffiliation. After explaining the purpose of and the ground rules governing the meeting Pastor Horner introduced representatives of the Session and Elder Don Gentry, who provided a rationale for the disaffiliation move. The Resolution was then read in its entirety, followed by a motion and second for its ratification. The floor was then opened for discussion and for a question and answer period. After the Question was called, ballots were distributed with instructions on how to vote. On being tallied the results were announced: 56 votes in favor, 1 vote against, and 2 abstentions. Following approval by voice vote the Clerk was directed to cast a unanimous vote on behalf of the Congregation. The Moderator then declared that as of that moment the Congregation had severed its relationship with the PCUSA. The participants then rose to sing the first stanza of the Hymn ‘The Church’s One Foundation” and moved for adjournment.

Letter from Session

On Sunday, March 25 the congregation of Faith voted by unanimous ballot to sever ties with the PCUSA. It is a difficult time for us, as we reflect upon nearly 48 years of affiliation. The motion brought by the Session represents the cumulative work of multiple Sessions over a number of years -- many, many hours of prayer and careful discernment. It is the conclusion of our fellowship that it is not so much a matter of OUR leaving the PCUSA, as it is a matter of the PCUSA having left us.
We enter now upon a time of TRANSITION. Though in some markedly different sorts of ways, we yet have been here before. And we always emerge, through God’s grace, a stronger and more closely knit fellowship for having shared the experience together.
“By faith Abraham obeyed when he was called to go out to the place which he would receive as an inheritance. And he went out, not knowing where he was going.” (Heb. 11: 8) As we enter this new time of transition, your Session asks for your forbearance; we are in uncharted territory, and travel a road with which we are all unfamiliar. We ask for your understanding, and most of all we ask for your prayers.
In the meantime, the mission of Faith Church – to Worship God in Spirit and Truth, to Grow Personally and Corporately in Grace and in the Knowledge of Jesus Christ, and to Obey Jesus’ Command to Extend the Gospel – continues, though perhaps with an even greater fervency. Our programs, missions, and most of all our Worship, will continue without interruption.
Please pray for us, even as we continue to pray for you, as we each seek the guidance of the Holy Spirit in all that we do.

Faith Presbyterian Church Resolution

Whereas, the Congregation of Faith Presbyterian Church received and adopted the essential tenets of the Reformed faith as expressed in the Westminster Confessions, and has been guided throughout its corporate spiritual life solely by the authority of the Scriptures of the Old and New Testaments since its inception in 1964; and
Whereas, the Congregation of Faith Presbyterian Church has faithfully adhered to those tenets and accepted authority of Scripture to the best of its ability throughout its history; and
Whereas, the Congregation of Faith Presbyterian Church believes that God is Lord of all, and Head of His Church; as represented by God the Father, God the Son and God the Holy Spirit, and there is none other; and
Whereas, the Congregation of Faith Presbyterian Church, on the day of its inception, voluntarily affiliated with the Presbyterian Church (USA)in recognition of the shared principles, polity, and teaching represented by the PCUSA which at that time were held in common; and
Whereas, the Congregation of Faith Presbyterian Church, both past and current members are appreciative of the guidance and financial support received in the form of loan proceeds from the Presbytery of Wabash Valley, which aided in the purchase of the property and the construction of the building as the congregation was organized, and understand that the members of Faith Presbyterian Church repaid said loan in its entirety in fulfillment of its obligations, and through its spiritual and financial support of the Presbytery over the ensuing years has faithfully recompensed their kindness in gratitude; and
Whereas, the Congregation of Faith Presbyterian Church, in light of the current and recent past policy changes and adaptations to the Form of Government, ordination standards, and pension plan; as well as disparate understandings of scriptural authority as reflected in those changes, believe that both the General Assembly and the Presbytery have departed from the received standards and tenets of the Reformed Church such that they are no longer recognizable as the self-same entities with which Faith Presbyterian Church originally affiliated; and
Whereas, the Congregation of Faith Presbyterian Church, in affirmation of these standards and tenets, and seeking to avert protracted loss of membership consequent to said changes, desires to maintain and grow its membership in the unity of faithful worship, continue in loving fellowship together in a nurturing environment unhindered by political ferment, and serve God according to the tenets of the Reformed Church, guided by the Holy Scriptures, and led by the Holy Spirit.
Be it therefore resolved, after thoughtful consideration and in a spirit of prayerful discernment, the Congregation of Faith Presbyterian Church, individually and corporately, with much regret, submits the result of its vote to disaffiliate from the Presbyterian Church USA, the Synod of Lincoln Trails, and the Presbytery of Wabash Valley, effective this date, and authorizes the Board of Trustees of Faith Presbyterian Church Inc. to appoint representatives charged with the task of attaining a severance of affiliation mutually acceptable to both parties.

From the Focus Committee

The focus committee has been holding in silico meetings this past month because of all the travel conflicts with spring breaks, family gatherings and all the things that come with life in the 21st century. Here are a couple ideas we are developing to make our church more attractive to new members:

Enhance the internet connectivity of the fellowship hall and classrooms so the youth group can be more interactive. Related to this will be an upgrade of the church video capability with a wide screen TV.

Develop a job description for a youth pastor to serve both the youth group and small group needs of our younger members. I will leave it to you to decide if you’re a target of this ministry.

The following all relate to making our church more visible:

Make our facilities accessible the neighborhood by adding a basketball hoop on the parking area and playground equipment both for our kids and those of the neighborhood. We are exploring access to the neighborhood without having to walk along 26 to make safer access.

Encourage groups to use the church for meetings so our building comes alive. How about the bible studies meeting at the church instead of homes? What do we need to do to make the church as comfortable as living-rooms?

Make our web presence attractive to new arrivals in our community that might be searching for a church home. Be sure we highlight all the great stuff we do rather than “hide our light under a bushel”.

Our next in vivo meeting is April 4. Please send us your ideas to make Faith Church a Happening Place.

Lastly a challenge to all the other church committees; Write a better article for the newsletter each month than the Focus committee. Don’t hide your light. Let everyone know what great things are happening at Faith Church.

Bibliophilia

“These commandments that I give you today are to be on your heart. Impress them on your children.
Talk about them when you sit at home and when you walk along the road, when you lie down and when
you get up.” Deuteronomy 6:6-7

As adults, we usually know—whether we practice the knowledge or not—that God's word
should be central to our lives. As parents, the logical extension of this is that we must teach God's
word to our children. And if logic doesn't persuade us, perhaps God's word itself will (see, for instance,
the verses quoted above). There are many story-versions of the Bible, complete with gorgeous
illustrations and child-friendly language. As church librarian (and occasionally responsible for
purchasing such books), I am not denigrating these resources. Rather, I am asking you to think beyond
them. Consider for a moment how this may seem to children as they grow up: Moses' Dry Feet side
by side with I Wish That I Had Duck Feet; Jonah and the Very Big Fish on a shelf with One Fish Two
Fish Red Fish Blue Fish; The Beginner's Bible: Timeless Children's Stories sharing space with
timeless Aesop's Fables. How do children learn that there is a difference between their Bible story
books and their other story books? And perhaps more importantly, how do they make the leap from the
Bible as merely interesting stories to the Bible as God's word speaking to their lives?
I would like to suggest that we underestimate our children's ability to listen to and understand
things from God's word and that we underestimate God's ability to insure that His word will have a
long-lasting impact on children's lives. Need ideas on how and when to start reading directly from the
Bible to your children? How about these:

• Want to start small? Read a single verse a day. Repeat the same verse until everybody in the
family can say it from memory (even the toddlers and preschoolers). As they grow, add more
verses per day, until maybe you will find yourself memorizing whole chapters or books.

• Read directly from the Bible once a day as a family. For us, breakfast worked well. When the
kids are little, start with short Bible stories that they might already know from Sunday School or
their storybooks (but read it directly from the Bible). The story of David and Goliath is just as
exciting read from the Bible, as is Jesus walking on water, for instance. As they get older, move
to longer passages.

• Try following an Advent reading plan around Christmas time. And read the Easter story at
Easter. This helps to connect what we do at church with what we read in God's word at home.

• The Sunday Scripture readings are listed in the monthly newsletters. On Monday through
Saturday, read the verses listed for the upcoming Sunday. If possible, repeat them each day.
You might be surprised at how your children perk up when they hear the same thing again
during the Sunday service. When to start? As early as your child will listen. Thomas and I did
this at breakfast from the time he was about 2. By the time he was 4, he was whispering to me
on Sunday “that is the same thing we read at home.” It also helps to follow along during the
Sunday service using the pew Bible (or one you bring from home) rather than just using the
bulletin. This helps to reinforce the idea that what they are hearing is God's word.

• When your children become teenagers, try one of the many Bible-in-a-Year reading plans. Do
this together, reading out loud, just as you did when they were younger. Ask me on New Year's
Eve, and I'll let you know how Thomas and I fared.

And....Happy Reading.

Hymn # 378 Hosanna, Loud Hosanna

Psalter: Psalm 24 (read responsively) Ron Smith
1The earth is the Lord’s and all that is in it, the world, and those who live in it;
2for he has founded it on the seas, and established it on the rivers.
3Who shall ascend the hill of the Lord? And who shall stand in his holy place?
4Those who have clean hands and pure hearts, who do not lift up their souls to what is false, and do not swear deceitfully.
5They will receive blessing from the Lord, and vindication from the God of their salvation.
6Such is the company of those who seek him, who seek the face of the God of Jacob.
7Lift up your heads, O gates! and be lifted up, O ancient doors! that the King of glory may come in.
8Who is the King of glory? The Lord, strong and mighty, the Lord, mighty in battle.
9Lift up your heads, O gates! and be lifted up, O ancient doors! that the King of glory may come in.
9Rejoice greatly, O daughter Zion! Shout aloud, O daughter Jerusalem! Lo, your king comes to you; triumphant and victorious is he, humble and riding on a donkey, on a colt, the foal of a donkey. 10He will cut off the chariot from Ephraim and the war horse from Jerusalem; and the battle bow shall be cut off, and he shall command peace to the nations; his dominion shall be from sea to sea, and from the River to the ends of the earth. 11As for you also, because of the blood of my covenant with you, I will set your prisoners free from the waterless pit.

Children’s Sermon

Hymn # 370 The King of Glory Comes

Second Lesson: Mark 11: 1 - 11 NRSV
1When they were approaching Jerusalem, at Bethphage and Bethany, near the Mount of Olives, he sent two of his disciples 2and said to them, “Go into the village ahead of you, and immediately as you enter it, you will find tied there a colt that has never been ridden; untie it and bring it. 3If anyone says to you, ‘Why are you doing this?’ just say this, ‘The Lord needs it and will send it back here immediately.’” 4They went away and found a colt tied near a door, outside in the street. As they were untying it, 5some of the bystanders said to them, “What are you doing, untying the colt?” 6They told them what Jesus had said; and they allowed them to take it. 7Then they brought the colt to Jesus and threw their cloaks on it; and he sat on it. 8Many people spread their cloaks on the road, and others spread leafy branches that they had cut in the fields. 9Then those who went ahead and those who followed were shouting,
“Hosanna!
Blessed is the one who comes in the name of the Lord!
10Blessed is the coming kingdom of our ancestor David!
Hosanna in the highest heaven!”
11Then he entered Jerusalem and went into the temple; and when he had looked around at everything, as it was already late, he went out to Bethany with the twelve.

The Order for the Worship of God</h>

Faith Presbyterian Church	9:30 a.m., March 25, 2012
Let the first tone of the organ be a call to quiet meditation in which all may become aware of God’s presence, and lift up a prayer for yourself and for Faith Church.

Hymn Sing Gray Psalter Hymnal
# 438 When Morning Gilds the Sky vs. 1, 4 & 5
# 431 All Creatures of Our God and King vs. 1 & 5
# 556 Great is Thy Faithfulness
#634 Father, We Love You

Welcome

  Prayer

Hymn # 453 Let All Things Now Living

Psalter: Psalm 55: 16 - 23 (read responsively) Bert Chapman
16But I call upon God, and the Lord will save me.
17Evening and morning and at noon I utter my complaint and moan, and he will hear my voice.
18He will redeem me unharmed from the battle that I wage, for many are arrayed against me.
19God, who is enthroned from of old, Selah will hear, and will humble them— because they do not change, and do not fear God.
20My companion laid hands on a friend and violated a covenant with me
21with speech smoother than butter, but with a heart set on war; with words that were softer than oil, but in fact were drawn swords.
22Cast your burden on the Lord, and he will sustain you; he will never permit the righteous to be moved.
23But you, O God, will cast them down into the lowest pit; the bloodthirsty and treacherous shall not live out half their days. But I will trust in you.

Prayer for Illumination Bert Chapman

First Lesson: I Kings 17: 1 - 16 NRSV Bert Chapman
1Now Elijah the Tishbite, of Tishbe in Gilead, said to Ahab, “As the Lord the God of Israel lives, before whom I stand, there shall be neither dew nor rain these years, except by my word.” 2The word of the Lord came to him, saying, 3“Go from here and turn eastward, and hide yourself by the Wadi Cherith, which is east of the Jordan. 4You shall drink from the wadi, and I have commanded the ravens to feed you there.” 5So he went and did according to the word of the Lord; he went and lived by the Wadi Cherith, which is east of the Jordan. 6The ravens brought him bread and meat in the morning, and bread and meat in the evening; and he drank from the wadi. 7But after a while the wadi dried up, because there was no rain in the land.
8Then the word of the Lord came to him, saying, 9“Go now to Zarephath, which belongs to Sidon, and live there; for I have commanded a widow there to feed you.” 10So he set out and went to Zarephath. When he came to the gate of the town, a widow was there gathering sticks; he called to her and said, “Bring me a little water in a vessel, so that I may drink.” 11As she was going to bring it, he called to her and said, “Bring me a morsel of bread in your hand.” 12But she said, “As the Lord your God lives, I have nothing baked, only a handful of meal in a jar, and a little oil in a jug; I am now gathering a couple of sticks, so that I may go home and prepare it for myself and my son, that we may eat it, and die.” 13Elijah said to her, “Do not be afraid; go and do as you have said; but first make me a little cake of it and bring it to me, and afterwards make something for yourself and your son. 14For thus says the Lord the God of Israel: The jar of meal will not be emptied and the jug of oil will not fail until the day that the Lord sends rain on the earth.” 15She went and did as Elijah said, so that she as well as he and her household ate for many days. 16The jar of meal was not emptied, neither did the jug of oil fail, according to the word of the Lord that he spoke by Elijah.

Lector: “This is the Word of God.”

Congregation: “Thanks be to God for His Word.”

Anthem Take My Yoke Upon You Douglas Nolan

Children’s Sermon

Hymn # 461 Beautiful Savior

Second Lesson: Mark 14: 1 - 11 NRSV
1It was two days before the Passover and the festival of Unleavened Bread. The chief priests and the scribes were looking for a way to arrest Jesus by stealth and kill him; 2for they said, “Not during the festival, or there may be a riot among the people.”
3While he was at Bethany in the house of Simon the leper, as he sat at the table, a woman came with an alabaster jar of very costly ointment of nard, and she broke open the jar and poured the ointment on his head. 4But some were there who said to one another in anger, “Why was the ointment wasted in this way? 5For this ointment could have been sold for more than three hundred denarii, and the money given to the poor.” And they scolded her. 6But Jesus said, “Let her alone; why do you trouble her? She has performed a good service for me. 7For you always have the poor with you, and you can show kindness to them whenever you wish; but you will not always have me. 8She has done what she could; she has anointed my body beforehand for its burial. 9Truly I tell you, wherever the good news is proclaimed in the whole world, what she has done will be told in remembrance of her.”
10Then Judas Iscariot, who was one of the twelve, went to the chief priests in order to betray him to them. 11When they heard it, they were greatly pleased, and promised to give him money. So he began to look for an opportunity to betray him.

the falling tear in mercy flowed beyond all bounds;

Faith Presbyterian Church	9:30 a.m., March 18, 2012
Let the first tone of the organ be a call to quiet meditation in which all may become aware of God’s presence, and lift up a prayer for yourself and for Faith Church.

Hymn Sing Gray Psalter Hymnal
# 246 Come, Thou Almighty King vs. 1, 2 & 3
# 430 We Sing the Mighty Power of God vs. 1 & 2
# 573 O Master, Let Me Walk with Thee vs. 1, 2 & 3
#634 Father, We Love You

Welcome

Prayer

Confession: Westminster Larger Catechism, Q & A 185
Question: How are we to pray?

Answer: We are to pray with an awful apprehension of the majesty of God, and deep sense of our own unworthiness, necessities, and sins; with penitent, thankful, and enlarged hearts; with understanding, faith sincerity, fervency, love, and perseverance, waiting upon him with humble submission to his will.

Hymn # 599 God of All Ages, Whose Almighty Hand

Psalter: Psalm 69: 9 - 16 (read responsively) Lois Wark
9It is zeal for your house that has consumed me; the insults of those who insult you have fallen on me.
10When I humbled my soul with fasting, they insulted me for doing so.
11When I made sackcloth my clothing, I became a byword to them.
12I am the subject of gossip for those who sit in the gate, and the drunkards make songs about me.
13But as for me, my prayer is to you, O Lord. At an acceptable time, O God, in the abundance of your steadfast love, answer me. With your faithful help
14rescue me from sinking in the mire; let me be delivered from my enemies and from the deep waters.
15Do not let the flood sweep over me, or the deep swallow me up, or the Pit close its mouth over me.
16Answer me, O Lord, for your steadfast love is good; according to your abundant mercy, turn to me.

Prayer for Illumination Lois Wark

First Lesson: Deuteronomy 8: 1 – 10 NRSV Lois Wark
1This entire commandment that I command you today you must diligently observe, so that you may live and increase, and go in and occupy the land that the Lord promised on oath to your ancestors. 2Remember the long way that the Lord your God has led you these forty years in the wilderness, in order to humble you, testing you to know what was in your heart, whether or not you would keep his commandments. 3He humbled you by letting you hunger, then by feeding you with manna, with which neither you nor your ancestors were acquainted, in order to make you understand that one does not live by bread alone, but by every word that comes from the mouth of the Lord. 4The clothes on your back did not wear out and your feet did not swell these forty years. 5Know then in your heart that as a parent disciplines a child so the Lord your God disciplines you. 6Therefore keep the commandments of the Lord your God, by walking in his ways and by fearing him. 7For the Lord your God is bringing you into a good land, a land with flowing streams, with springs and underground waters welling up in valleys and hills, 8a land of wheat and barley, of vines and fig trees and pomegranates, a land of olive trees and honey, 9a land where you may eat bread without scarcity, where you will lack nothing, a land whose stones are iron and from whose hills you may mine copper.
10You shall eat your fill and bless the Lord your God for the good land that he has given you.

Lector: “This is the Word of God.”

Congregation: “Thanks be to God for His Word.”

Special Music Dona Nobis Pacem Arranged by John A. Behnke
( See Music Notes) Handbell Choir

This chant ("Grant us peace" in Latin) is used throughout Christendom, often as a canon, in which the traditional melody is stated in one voice and imitated strictly in another. In this arrangement the melody is passed back and forth between bells.

Children’s Sermon

Hymn # 551 O, for a Closer Walk with God

Second Lesson: Mark 12: 38 – 44 NRSV
38As he taught, he said, “Beware of the scribes, who like to walk around in long robes, and to be greeted with respect in the marketplaces, 39and to have the best seats in the synagogues and places of honor at banquets! 40They devour widows’ houses and for the sake of appearance say long prayers. They will receive the greater condemnation.”
41He sat down opposite the treasury, and watched the crowd putting money into the treasury. Many rich people put in large sums. 42A poor widow came and put in two small copper coins, which are worth a penny. 43Then he called his disciples and said to them, “Truly I tell you, this poor widow has put in more than all those who are contributing to the treasury. 44For all of them have contributed out of their abundance; but she out of her poverty has put in everything she had, all she had to live on.”

Sermon “Beware! and Be Like?” Pastor David Horner

After the sermon children in grades K-6 may leave for children’s choir

The Order for the Worship of God

Faith Presbyterian Church	9:30 a.m., March 11, 2012
Let the first tone of the organ be a call to quiet meditation in which all may become aware of God’s presence, and lift up a prayer for yourself and for Faith Church.

Hymn Sing Gray Psalter Hymnal
# 428 O Worship the King vs. 1, 3 & 4
# 209 Seek Ye First the Kingdom vs. 1, 2 & 3
# 29 Give Glory to God, All You Heavenly Creatures vs. 1, 2 & 5
#634 Father, We Love You

Welcome

  Prayer

Hymn # 569 Praise the Lord with the Sound of Trumpet

Psalter: Psalm 57: 14 - 21 (read responsively) Donna Lofgren
1Be merciful to me, O God, be merciful to me, for in you my soul takes refuge; in the shadow of your wings I will take refuge, until the destroying storms pass by.
2I cry to God Most High, to God who fulfills his purpose for me.
3He will send from heaven and save me, he will put to shame those who trample on me. Selah God will send forth his steadfast love and his faithfulness.
4I lie down among lions that greedily devour human prey; their teeth are spears and arrows, their tongues sharp swords.
5Be exalted, O God, above the heavens. Let your glory be over all the earth.
6They set a net for my steps; my soul was bowed down. They dug a pit in my path, but they have fallen into it themselves.
7My heart is steadfast, O God, my heart is steadfast. I will sing and make melody.
8Awake, my soul! Awake, O harp and lyre! I will awake the dawn.
9I will give thanks to you, O Lord, among the peoples; I will sing praises to you among the nations.
10For your steadfast love is as high as the heavens; your faithfulness extends to the clouds.
11Be exalted, O God, above the heavens. Let your glory be over all the earth.

Prayer for Illumination Donna Lofgren

First Lesson: Job 1: 1 - 5 NRSV Donna Lofgren
1There was once a man in the land of Uz whose name was Job. That man was blameless and upright, one who feared God and turned away from evil. 2There were born to him seven sons and three daughters. 3He had seven thousand sheep, three thousand camels, five hundred yoke of oxen, five hundred donkeys, and very many servants; so that this man was the greatest of all the people of the east.
4His sons used to go and hold feasts in one another’s houses in turn; and they would send and invite their three sisters to eat and drink with them. 5And when the feast days had run their course, Job would send and sanctify them, and he would rise early in the morning and offer burnt offerings according to the number of them all; for Job said, “It may be that my children have sinned, and cursed God in their hearts.” This is what Job always did.

Lector: “This is the Word of God.”

Congregation: “Thanks be to God for His Word.”

Special Music I’ll Fly Away Albert E. Brumley
David & Kris Stith/Tom & Carol Goodrich

Children’s Sermon

Hymn # 21 Jesus, the Very Thought of Thee
(Green Supplemental Hymnal)

Second Lesson: Mark 9: 38 – 50 NRSV
38John said to him, “Teacher, we saw someone casting out demons in your name, and we tried to stop him, because he was not following us.” 39But Jesus said, “Do not stop him; for no one who does a deed of power in my name will be able soon afterward to speak evil of me. 40Whoever is not against us is for us. 41For truly I tell you, whoever gives you a cup of water to drink because you bear the name of Christ will by no means lose the reward.
42“If any of you put a stumbling block before one of these little ones who believe in me, it would be better for you if a great millstone were hung around your neck and you were thrown into the sea. 43If your hand causes you to stumble, cut it off; it is better for you to enter life maimed than to have two hands and to go to hell, to the unquenchable fire. 45And if your foot causes you to stumble, cut it off; it is better for you to enter life lame than to have two feet and to be thrown into hell. 47And if your eye causes you to stumble, tear it out; it is better for you to enter the kingdom of God with one eye than to have two eyes and to be thrown into hell, 48where their worm never dies, and the fire is never quenched.
49“For everyone will be salted with fire. 50Salt is good; but if salt has lost its saltiness, how can you season it? Have salt in yourselves, and be at peace with one another.”

Sermon “A Stranger, A Millstone, and Salt”
Pastor David Horner

After the sermon children in grades K-6 may leave for children’s choir

Let the first tone of the organ be a call to quiet mediation in which all may become aware of God’s presence, and lift up a prayer for yourself and for Faith Church.

Hymn Sing

Welcome

Hymn # 240 Come, All Who Fear the Lord God

Prayer of Confession – front of gray hymnal

Prayer for Illumination Lou Ann Johnston

First Lesson: Hebrews 11: 8 - 12 NRSV Lou Ann Johnston
8By faith Abraham obeyed when he was called to set out for a place that he was to receive as an inheritance; and he set out, not knowing where he was going. 9By faith he stayed for a time in the land he had been promised, as in a foreign land, living in tents, as did Isaac and Jacob, who were heirs with him of the same promise. 10For he looked forward to the city that has foundations, whose architect and builder is God. 11By faith he received power of procreation, even though he was too old—and Sarah herself was barren—because he considered him faithful who had promised. 12Therefore from one person, and this one as good as dead, descendants were born, “as many as the stars of heaven and as the innumerable grains of sand by the seashore.”

Lector: “This is the Word of God.”

Congregation: “Thanks be to God for His Word.”

Anthem A Communion Meditation Don Besig

Children’s Sermon

Hymn # 379 What Wondrous Love

Second Lesson: Mark 5: 35 - 43 NRSV
35While he was still speaking, some people came from the leader’s house to say, “Your daughter is dead. Why trouble the teacher any further?” 36But overhearing what they said, Jesus said to the leader of the synagogue, “Do not fear, only believe.” 37He allowed no one to follow him except Peter, James, and John, the brother of James. 38When they came to the house of the leader of the synagogue, he saw a commotion, people weeping and wailing loudly. 39When he had entered, he said to them, “Why do you make a commotion and weep? The child is not dead but sleeping.” 40And they laughed at him. Then he put them all outside, and took the child’s father and mother and those who were with him, and went in where the child was. 41He took her by the hand and said to her, “Talitha cum,” which means, “Little girl, get up!” 42And immediately the girl got up and began to walk about (she was twelve years of age). At this they were overcome with amazement. 43He strictly ordered them that no one should know this, and told them to give her something to eat.

Sermon “Only Believe? ” Pastor David Horner

Gathering of Tithes and Offerings

Offertory Alas, And Did My Savior Bleed Sharon Rogers
(Gray hymnal p. 385)

Response
Take my life and let it be
Consecrated, Lord to thee.
Take my moments and my days;
Let them flow in endless praise,
Let them flow in endless praise.

   Hymn # 307 O Jesus, Joy of Loving Hearts vs. 1 - 3

The Lord’s Supper
Invitation
Words of Institution: Mark 14: 22 – 25 NRSV
In Unison
22While they were eating, he took a loaf of bread, and after blessing it he broke it, gave it to them, and said, “Take; this is my body.” 23Then he took a cup, and after giving thanks he gave it to them, and all of them drank from it. 24He said to them, “This is my blood of the covenant, which is poured out for many. 25Truly I tell you, I will never again drink of the fruit of the vine until that day when I drink it new in the kingdom of God.”

  Prayer of Thanksgiving
Giving and receiving of the Bread and Cup
The inside cups are white grape juice;
the outer cups contain wine.

Amen.

Pastor's Pen

As I think about where we are in time, passing from February to March in the year 2012, I think that we had a great February at Faith Presbyterian. We had two fantastic Fellowship events this month planned and executed by the Congregational Life Committee.

The first was a Friday evening Family Fun Night. It was well attended and everyone had a good time, even the Cat in the Hat who presented his 10 Catmandments. (Although it is usually difficult to tell if cats are having a good time.)

The second was a pancake breakfast/brunch on the last Sunday before Lent. The food and the fellowship were great and again a good time was had by all. For those children who wanted to know; No, the Pastor does not normally eat his pancakes with chocolate chips, cherry sauce and whipped Cream. But they are really good that way. But you can only eat them that way if your mom and dad say it is okay.

Another interesting question came my way recently and I thought some of you might like to know the question as well as the answer because it involves one of the ministries or missions of Faith Church.

It was noted by one of our folks that in the annual report, on the page setting forth the Deacons’ finances, there were two items listed as Jail Ministry and Pastor’s Fund. The question asked was How or why are those moneys spent and where do the funds in those accounts come from. Since the expenditures from those two accounts in 2011 came to over $1,700.00 it seemed to me to be important to answer the question clearly.

The Pastor’s Fund is also known as the Pastor’s Discretionary fund and the money in it comes from the deacons’ two sources of income. Most of their money comes from the annual budget of Faith Church. The Session allocates a certain sum from our income every year to the deacons to fund our missions. The Pastor’s Fund is one of those missions. But some of the money that the deacons receive annually comes directly from the people of our congregation as they put money in the envelopes marked “Deacons Fund”. That money is added to the money that comes from the budget.

So the Pastor’s Fund comes from the regular offerings and from the Deacons’ Fund Envelopes. The Deacons occasionally vote to put more money from their general treasury into the Pastor’s Fund as more is needed.

Where does that money go? It goes to various individuals from our community and from our congregation who develop the need for financial help. Some goes for food and gasoline for folks who need help, some goes to pay for medical help, some so people can buy tires so they can safely transport themselves and their familes. Some goes to pay rent or utility bills. These funds are spent as the Pastor receives requests.

The Jail Ministry Fund is different. Although it flows through the Deacons’ accounts, and is reported to and supervised by them, it does not come from their normal sources of income.

As most of you know, Faith Church has as one of its ministries or missions a weekly Bible Study at the Work Release Center in Lafayette. The Work Release Center is a part of our local penal system. People get assigned there through various acts of the Court System.

Some are sentenced to serve there for a while because their crime does not seem to require the need for complete confinement in the County Jail. Some have been in Jail and the “next step” for them is the work release center where they can be confined when they are not working but be free to have a job during working hours. Others have been sentenced to house arrest with electronic surveillance and have failed or violated some aspect of that confinement. Still others are released to the Work Release Center after serving some time in prison, as a way to gradually release them from total long-term confinement to freedom.

The people who are in the Work Release Center pay for the privilege of being there. Each detainee is assessed to pay a certain amount each week they are in residence. Most of them do not have jobs when they are assigned there and their first task is to find employment. Some of you know that employment is not easy to find right now, and you can imagine that it is more difficult for a person with a criminal record.

Buy the time some inmates find a job, they have accrued several hundred or over a thousand dollars in fees that must be paid before they are released. Sometimes those of us who lead the Bible Study help pay some of those fees from the Jail Ministry Fund. Sometimes the inmates have other financial problems we help with. Sometimes, after they are released, they become sick or injured and we help with medical expenses.

We also use the money in the Jail Ministry Fund to purchase new Bibles to be used at the Work Release Center in our Bible Studies.

The money in the Jail Ministry Fund comes from individuals who know of this fund and have the desire to help the prisoners to whom we minister during the Bible Study sessions.

There are currently four of us involved in leading the Bible Studies at the Work Release Center. They are Mike Bergmann, Stuart Robertson, Steve Varys, and me. Before we spend any money from the Jail Ministry account we all discuss each need and are in agreement to spend money on a certain need.

I hope that I have explained this ministry to your satisfaction. If you have any questions, you know where to find me.

Before I close, I want to remind you that the celebrations of Palm Sunday, Maundy Thursday and Good Friday will come during the first week of April. Please schedule time to be with us on those days.

I hope that you also note that Daylight Savings time will begin on Sunday, March 11. Don’t forget to “Spring Forward” to be in time for Worship.

As always, I pray that the month ahead will be filled with good things for you and our Church.

Your Pastor,

Homework Club

Homework Club continues at Klondike Elementary on Tuesdays and Thursdays after school. This outreach program to our community has been successful and the teachers have been very appreciative of our help with the students. They have commented that the students raise their hands in class, they are proud to have their work done, and are up to date on their work for the first time this year. It has also made an impact on the students’ families by taking some of the pressure of homework onto our shoulders instead of theirs. Last week a little boy asked me why the people from my church would want to help with homework. It was a way to tell him of our love for the children in our neighborhood. A big thank you to the homework helpers so far this year: Helen Day, Jurgen Honig, Pastor Horner, Grieke Toebes, Tom Housely, Marilyn Sameh, Grace Sededji, Charlotte Sededji, Vicki Kennell, Thomas Kennell, and Lou Ann Johnston.

A new committee at Faith Church with FOCUS

At its January meeting, the Session at Pastor Horner’s encouragement, formed a new committee with a title of FOCUS. The committee’s charge is :
Make recommendations to Session of ways to enhance the mission, growth and vitality of
Faith Church. Work with other committees to implement recommendations approved by session.

Simply put, FOCUS is a committee to look across all of Faith’s missions, activities and programs and look for ways to enhance the mission, growth and vitality of Faith Church. I serve as chair of the committee and have asked Adam Fassel, Jan Hem, Pat Kain, Lonni Kucik, and Amber Latour to serve on the committee. The scope of the committee is the entire church, perhaps the keyword of the committee is Vitality.

The committee had its first meeting February 8th where it mostly brainstormed issues related to enhance the mission, growth and vitality of Faith Church. A recurring theme of ideas tossed out at this initial meeting related to the church’s need to enhance the vitality of our mission and programs for families with kids in middle and high school. Therefore, four initial topics we will FOCUS on are:

The continuing challenge of creating a critical mass for our youth group.
Closely related to that; how can we encourage the formation of small group activities (bible study, book clubs, Sunday school, parent escape/support topics …..) targeted towards our member less than “50-something” years of age?
What can we do to make Faith Church more visible to the community (especially on the web)?
Are there small things we can do to make our service have broader appeal to all age groups?

BUT we are not done. These initial topics are not the limit of our FOCUS. Over the next several months, the committee will continue to look at our church broadly in search of areas to enhance the mission, growth and vitality of Faith Church.

To that end, if you have thoughts on how to enhance the mission, growth and vitality of Faith Church, please let one of the members of the committee know. We need and value your input. I encourage you to talk with your friends, kids and grandkids that attend other churches and find out what attracts them to those churches. Faith Church does not need to become other churches, but we can learn from the successes of other churches as to how they enhance the mission, growth and vitality of their Church

With Vitality, Terry Stewart

Bibliophilia

In The Luxury of Daydreams, Amy McVay Abbott allows us to eavesdrop on the voice that
“exploded in [her] head” after she lost her job and sent her only son off to college. The quietness of her new life allowed a return to the creativity that had been quelled by daily life: “I could not dance in my head when I had to stand in reality.” Each short chapter in this book dances us through a moment from the author's past, examining situation and event through the lens of emotion and experience, ranging widely over the various circumstances of family life, interpersonal relationships, and self-awareness.

She shares with us kernels of wisdom gained over a lifetime: “parenting is not for sissies”; those
without a sister may end up with a “sister by choice” if they go looking for one; while cancer may
destroy the body, “nothing could destroy [the] soul”; “attention to minor sounds that signal security is what we do as mothers”; “people with [abilities in] math and science are called 'doctors' and
'engineers'” while those who “possess excellent skills in talking and writing . . . are called 'sales reps' or 'unemployed'”; “passing on memories . . . is the real gift—both to the giver and the receiver.” Perhaps if you take a moment to receive this gift of her memories, you will find, as I did, moments that resonate with the life you have lived. Perhaps Abbott's book will inspire you to begin passing on your own memories to your children and friends.

Check it out from our church library today. Happy reading!
