The Order for the Worship of God

Faith  Presbyterian Church	             9:30 a.m., February 5, 2012
Let the first tone of the organ be a call to quiet mediation in which all may become aware of God’s presence, and lift up a prayer for yourself and for Faith Church.

Prelude                           Elevation
Francois Couperin    (France, 1668-1733)

I Come With Joy To Meet My Lord Peter Stearns
(See gray hymnal, p. 311)

Welcome

  Hymn # 486 Come, Thou Fount of Every Blessing

   Prayer of Confession – front of gray hymnal

Prayer for Illumination                                         Glenn Sparks

First Lesson: John 6: 47 - 51 NRSV Glenn Sparks
47Very truly, I tell you, whoever believes has eternal life. 48I am the bread of life. 49Your ancestors ate the manna in the wilderness, and they died. 50This is the bread that comes down from heaven, so that one may eat of it and not die. 51I am the living bread that came down from heaven. Whoever eats of this bread will live forever; and the bread that I will give for the life of the world is my flesh.”

Lector: “This is the Word of God.”

Congregation: “Thanks be to God for His Word.”

Anthem Old Time Religion / Swing Low Sweet Chariot

Children’s Sermon

   Hymn # 379           What Wondrous Love     vs. 1 - 2

Second Lesson:  I Corinthians 9:  15 - 23 NRSV
15But I have made no use of any of these rights, nor am I writing this so that they may be applied in my case. Indeed, I would rather die than that—no one will deprive me of my ground for boasting! 16If I proclaim the gospel, this gives me no ground for boasting, for an obligation is laid on me, and woe to me if I do not proclaim the gospel! 17For if I do this of my own will, I have a reward; but if not of my own will, I am entrusted with a commission. 18What then is my reward? Just this: that in my proclamation I may make the gospel free of charge, so as not to make full use of my rights in the gospel.
19For though I am free with respect to all, I have made myself a slave to all, so that I might win more of them. 20To the Jews I became as a Jew, in order to win Jews. To those under the law I became as one under the law (though I myself am not under the law) so that I might win those under the law. 21To those outside the law I became as one outside the law (though I am not free from God’s law but am under Christ’s law) so that I might win those outside the law. 22To the weak I became weak, so that I might win the weak. I have become all things to all people, that I might by all means save some. 23I do it all for the sake of the gospel, so that I may share in its blessings.

Sermon “Your Calling and Your Gift ” Pastor David Horner

Gathering of Tithes and Offerings

Offertory Prelude on the hymntune "Bevan" (1853)
Healey Willan (Canada,1880-1968)

Jesus, my great High Priest, offered His blood and died,
My guilty conscience seeks no sacrifice beside.
His powerful blood did once atone,
And now it pleads before the throne.

Response
Praise God, from whom all blessings flow;
Praise him, all creatures here below.
Alleluia, Alleluia.
Praise him above, you heavenly host;
Praise Father, Son, and Holy Ghost.
Alleluia, Alleluia,
Alleluia, Alleluia, Alleluia! ∆

   Hymn # 377 Were You There

The Lord’s Supper
Invitation
Words of Institution:  Matthew 26:  26 - 29 NRSV
In Unison
26While they were eating, Jesus took a loaf of bread, and after blessing it he broke it, gave it to the disciples, and said, “Take, eat; this is my body.” 27Then he took a cup, and after giving thanks he gave it to them, saying, “Drink from it, all of you; 28for this is my blood of the covenant, which is poured out for many for the forgiveness of sins. 29I tell you, I will never again drink of this fruit of the vine until that day when I drink it new with you in my Father’s kingdom.”

  Prayer of Thanksgiving
Giving and receiving of the Bread and Cup
The inside cups are white grape juice;
the outer cups contain wine.

Prayer of Consecration
Almighty Lord: we are thankful for all the benefits given us in this bread and wine, this body and blood. As the grain was harvested and the grapes gathered for this food, so may your church in every place be gathered into your household. And as the grain was ground and the grapes crushed, so may our lives be spent in your service, until you return in triumph to gather to yourself the harvest and call us to the marriage feast of the lamb. Amen.

Hymn # 379           What Wondrous Love     vs. 3 - 4

Benediction

Faith Presbyterian Church	9:30 a.m., January 29, 2012
Let the first tone of the organ be a call to quiet meditation in which all may become aware of God’s presence, and lift up a prayer for yourself and for Faith Church.

Prelude Le Moulin De Paris (Anonymous, XV Century)

                 The King of Love My Shepherd Is Sharon Rogers

Welcome

  Prayer

Confession: The Westminster Confession of Faith 6.140, 6.141, 6.142
1. The catholic or universal church, which is invisible, consists of the whole number of the elect, that have been, are, or shall be gathered into one, under Christ the head thereof; and is the spouse, the body, the fullness of Him that filleth all in all!
2. The visible Church, which is also called catholic or universal under the gospel (not confined to one nation as before under the law), consists of all those throughout the world that profess the true religion, together with their children; and is the Kingdom of the Lord Jesus Christ; the house and family of God, through which men are ordinarily saved and union with which is essential to their best growth and service.
3. Unto this catholic visible Church, Christ hath given the ministry, oracles, and ordinances of God, for the gathering and perfecting of the saints, in this life, to the end of the world; and doth by his own presence and Spirit, according to his promise, make them effectual thereunto.

  Hymn # 13 Immortal, Invisible, God Only Wise
(Green Supplemental Hymnal)

Psalter:  Psalm 133:  1 – 3 & 135:  1 - 5 NRSV          Amber Pond
1How very good and pleasant it is when kindred live together in unity!
2It is like the precious oil on the head, running down upon the beard, on the beard of Aaron, running down over the collar of his robes.
3It is like the dew of Hermon, which falls on the mountains of Zion. For there the Lord ordained his blessing, life forevermore.
1Praise the Lord! Praise the name of the Lord; give praise, O servants of the Lord,
2you that stand in the house of the Lord, in the courts of the house of our God.
3Praise the Lord, for the Lord is good; sing to his name, for he is gracious.
4For the Lord has chosen Jacob for himself, Israel as his own possession.
5For I know that the Lord is great; our Lord is above all gods.

Prayer for Illumination                                                    Amber Pond

First Lesson: John 4: 34 - 38 NRSV Amber Pond
34Jesus said to them, “My food is to do the will of him who sent me and to complete his work. 35Do you not say, ‘Four months more, then comes the harvest’? But I tell you, look around you, and see how the fields are ripe for harvesting. 36The reaper is already receiving wages and is gathering fruit for eternal life, so that sower and reaper may rejoice together. 37For here the saying holds true, ‘One sows and another reaps.’ 38I sent you to reap that for which you did not labor. Others have labored, and you have entered into their labor.”

Lector: “This is the Word of God.”

Congregation: “Thanks be to God for His Word.”

Anthem I Am His, and He Is Mine
James Mountain/arr. Fettke

Children’s Sermon

Hymn # 510                      I Love your Church, O Lord

Second Lesson:  Acts 18:  1 – 5, 18 – 28 NRSV
1After this Paul left Athens and went to Corinth. 2There he found a Jew named Aquila, a native of Pontus, who had recently come from Italy with his wife Priscilla, because Claudius had ordered all Jews to leave Rome. Paul went to see them, 3and, because he was of the same trade, he stayed with them, and they worked together—by trade they were tentmakers. 4Every sabbath he would argue in the synagogue and would try to convince Jews and Greeks. 5When Silas and Timothy arrived from Macedonia, Paul was occupied with proclaiming the word, testifying to the Jews that the Messiah was Jesus.
18After staying there for a considerable time, Paul said farewell to the believers and sailed for Syria, accompanied by Priscilla and Aquila. At Cenchreae he had his hair cut, for he was under a vow. 19When they reached Ephesus, he left them there, but first he himself went into the synagogue and had a discussion with the Jews. 20When they asked him to stay longer, he declined; 21but on taking leave of them, he said, “I will return to you, if God wills.” Then he set sail from Ephesus. 22When he had landed at Caesarea, he went up to Jerusalem and greeted the church, and then went down to Antioch. 23After spending some time there he departed and went from place to place through the region of Galatia and Phrygia, strengthening all the disciples.
24Now there came to Ephesus a Jew named Apollos, a native of Alexandria. He was an eloquent man, well-versed in the scriptures. 25He had been instructed in the Way of the Lord; and he spoke with burning enthusiasm and taught accurately the things concerning Jesus, though he knew only the baptism of John. 26He began to speak boldly in the synagogue; but when Priscilla and Aquila heard him, they took him aside and explained the Way of God to him more accurately. 27And when he wished to cross over to Achaia, the believers encouraged him and wrote to the disciples to welcome him. On his arrival he greatly helped those who through grace had become believers, 28for he powerfully refuted the Jews in public, showing by the scriptures that the Messiah is Jesus.

Sermon “A Picture of the Church” Pastor David Horner

After the sermon children in grades K-6 may leave for children’s choir

Gathering of Tithes and Offerings

Offertory Oh Thou, In Whose Presence Roy Brunner
O Thou, in whose presence my soul takes delight,
On whom in affliction I call,
My comfort by day and my song in the night,
My hope, my salvation, my all.

Restore, my dear Savior, the light of thy face;
Thy soul-cheering comfort impart;
And let the sweet tokens of pardoning grace
Bring joy to my desolate heart.

Response
Give thanks with a grateful heart,
Give thanks to the Holy One,
Give thanks because He’s given Jesus Christ, His Son (repeat)
And now let the weak say, “I am strong!”
Let the poor say,
“I am rich, because of what the Lord has done for us!”
Give thanks with a grateful heart,
Give thanks to the Holy One,
Give thanks because He’s given Jesus Christ, His Son.
Give thanks.  Give thanks. ∆

Faith Presbyterian Church	9:30 a.m., January 22, 2012
Let the first tone of the organ be a call to quiet meditation in which all may become aware of God’s presence, and lift up a prayer for yourself and for Faith Church.

Prelude                    Cancion Religiosa

                        Lead Us, Heavenly Father, Lead Us Roy Brunner

Lead us, heavenly Father, lead us
O'er the world's tempestuous sea;
Guard us, guide us, keep us, feed us,
For we have no help but thee;
Yet possessing every blessing
If our God our Father be.

Welcome

Prayer

Confession:  Second Helvetic Confession, 5.146
Christ the Teacher. After these the heavenly Father even sent his only-begotten Son, the most perfect teacher of the world; in whom is hidden the wisdom of God, and which has come to us through the most holy, simple, and most perfect doctrine of all. For he chose disciples for himself whom he made apostles. These went out into the whole world, and everywhere gathered together churches by the preaching of the Gospel, and then throughout all the churches in the world they appointed pastors or teachers according to Christ’s command; through their successors he has taught and governed the Church unto this day. Therefore, as God gave unto his ancient people the patriarchs, together with Moses and the prophets, so also to his people of the New Testament he sent his only-begotten Son, and, with him, the apostles and teachers of the Church.

  Hymn # 8 Lord, Our Lord, Your Glorious Name vs. 1 – 4

Psalter:  Psalm 25:  1 - 10 NRSV                          Michael Bergmann
1To you, O Lord, I lift up my soul.
2O my God, in you I trust; do not let me be put to shame; do not let my enemies exult over me.
3Do not let those who wait for you be put to shame; let them be ashamed who are wantonly treacherous.
4Make me to know your ways, O Lord; teach me your paths.
5Lead me in your truth, and teach me, for you are the God of my salvation; for you I wait all day long.
6Be mindful of your mercy, O Lord, and of your steadfast love, for they have been from of old.
7Do not remember the sins of my youth or my transgressions; according to your steadfast love remember me, for your goodness’ sake, O Lord!
8Good and upright is the Lord; therefore he instructs sinners in the way.
9He leads the humble in what is right, and teaches the humble his way.
10All the paths of the Lord are steadfast love and faithfulness, for those who keep his covenant and his decrees.

Prayer for Illumination                                          Michael Bergmann

First Lesson: II Kings 1: 2 – 17a NRSV Michael Bergmann
2Ahaziah had fallen through the lattice in his upper chamber in Samaria, and lay injured; so he sent messengers, telling them, “Go, inquire of Baal-zebub, the god of Ekron, whether I shall recover from this injury.” 3But the angel of the Lord said to Elijah the Tishbite, “Get up, go to meet the messengers of the king of Samaria, and say to them, ‘Is it because there is no God in Israel that you are going to inquire of Baal-zebub, the god of Ekron?’ 4Now therefore thus says the Lord, ‘You shall not leave the bed to which you have gone, but you shall surely die.’” So Elijah went. 5The messengers returned to the king, who said to them, “Why have you returned?” 6They answered him, “There came a man to meet us, who said to us, ‘Go back to the king who sent you, and say to him: Thus says the Lord: Is it because there is no God in Israel that you are sending to inquire of Baal-zebub, the god of Ekron? Therefore you shall not leave the bed to which you have gone, but shall surely die.’” 7He said to them, “What sort of man was he who came to meet you and told you these things?” 8They answered him, “A hairy man, with a leather belt around his waist.” He said, “It is Elijah the Tishbite.”
9Then the king sent to him a captain of fifty with his fifty men. He went up to Elijah, who was sitting on the top of a hill, and said to him, “O man of God, the king says, ‘Come down.’” 10But Elijah answered the captain of fifty, “If I am a man of God, let fire come down from heaven and consume you and your fifty.” Then fire came down from heaven, and consumed him and his fifty. 11Again the king sent to him another captain of fifty with his fifty. He went up and said to him, “O man of God, this is the king’s order: Come down quickly!” 12But Elijah answered them, “If I am a man of God, let fire come down from heaven and consume you and your fifty.” Then the fire of God came down from heaven and consumed him and his fifty. 13Again the king sent the captain of a third fifty with his fifty. So the third captain of fifty went up, and came and fell on his knees before Elijah, and entreated him, “O man of God, please let my life, and the life of these fifty servants of yours, be precious in your sight. 14Look, fire came down from heaven and consumed the two former captains of fifty men with their fifties; but now let my life be precious in your sight.” 15Then the angel of the Lord said to Elijah, “Go down with him; do not be afraid of him.” So he set out and went down with him to the king, 16and said to him, “Thus says the Lord: Because you have sent messengers to inquire of Baal-zebub, the god of Ekron, —is it because there is no God in Israel to inquire of his word? —therefore you shall not leave the bed to which you have gone, but you shall surely die.” 17So he died according to the word of the Lord that Elijah had spoken. His brother, Jehoram succeeded him as king in the second year of King Jehoram son of Jehoshaphat of Judah, because Ahaziah had no son.

Second Lesson:  Acts 27:  9 - 12 NRSV
9Since much time had been lost and sailing was now dangerous, because even the Fast had already gone by, Paul advised them, 10saying, “Sirs, I can see that the voyage will be with danger and much heavy loss, not only of the cargo and the ship, but also of our lives.” 11But the centurion paid more attention to the pilot and to the owner of the ship than to what Paul said.
12Since the harbor was not suitable for spending the winter, the majority was in favor of putting to sea from there, on the chance that somehow they could reach Phoenix, where they could spend the winter. It was a harbor of Crete, facing southwest and northwest.

Worship
…is the quickening of conscience by God’s holiness;
the nourishment of mind with His truth;
the purifying of imagination by His beauty;
the opening of the heart to His love;
the surrender of the will to His purpose;
and all of this gathered up in adoration—
the most selfless emotion of which our nature is capable, and therefore the chief remedy for that self-centeredness which is our original sin and the source of all actual sin.”
-William Temple

Welcome

  Prayer

Confession:  Westminster Larger Catechism Q. & A. 3 & 4
Question 3: What is the Word of God?

Answer: The holy Scriptures of the Old and New Testaments are the Word of God, the only rule of faith and obedience.

Question 4: How doth it appear that the Scriptures are the Word of God?

Answer: The Scriptures manifest themselves to be the Word of God, by their majesty and purity; by the consent of all the parts, and the scope of the whole, which is to give all glory to God; by their light and power to convince and convert sinners, to comfort and build up believers unto salvation. But the Spirit of God, bearing witness by and with the Scriptures in the heart of man, is alone able fully to persuade it that they are the very word of God.
  Hymn # 95 Now with Joyful Exultation
(Gray Psalter Hymnal)

Psalter:  Psalm 50:  1 - 15 NRSV                              Cathy Lockwood
1The mighty one, God the Lord, speaks and summons the earth from the rising of the sun to its setting.
2Out of Zion, the perfection of beauty, God shines forth.
3Our God comes and does not keep silence, before him is a devouring fire, and a mighty tempest all around him.
4He calls to the heavens above and to the earth, that he may judge his people:
5“Gather to me my faithful ones, who made a covenant with me by sacrifice!”
6The heavens declare his righteousness, for God himself is judge. 7“Hear, O my people, and I will speak, O Israel, I will testify against you. I am God, your God.
8Not for your sacrifices do I rebuke you; your burnt offerings are continually before me.
9I will not accept a bull from your house, or goats from your folds.
10For every wild animal of the forest is mine, the cattle on a thousand hills.
11I know all the birds of the air, and all that moves in the field is mine.
12“If I were hungry, I would not tell you, for the world and all that is in it is mine.
13Do I eat the flesh of bulls, or drink the blood of goats?
14Offer to God a sacrifice of thanksgiving, and pay your vows to the Most High.
15Call on me in the day of trouble; I will deliver you, and you shall glorify me.”

Prayer for Illumination                                             Cathy Lockwood

First Lesson: Acts 18: 5 - 11 NRSV Cathy Lockwood
5When Silas and Timothy arrived from Macedonia, Paul was occupied with proclaiming the word, testifying to the Jews that the Messiah was Jesus. 6When they opposed and reviled him, in protest he shook the dust from his clothes and said to them, “Your blood be on your own heads! I am innocent. From now on I will go to the Gentiles.”
7Then he left the synagogue and went to the house of a man named Titius Justus, a worshiper of God; his house was next door to the synagogue. 8Crispus, the official of the synagogue, became a believer in the Lord, together with all his household; and many of the Corinthians who heard Paul became believers and were baptized. 9One night the Lord said to Paul in a vision, “Do not be afraid, but speak and do not be silent; 10for I am with you, and no one will lay a hand on you to harm you, for there are many in this city who are my people.” 11He stayed there a year and six months, teaching the word of God among them.

Children’s Sermon

Hymn # 591 Savior, Like a Shepherd Lead Us

Second Lesson:  I Samuel 3:  1 - 18 NRSV
1Now the boy Samuel was ministering to the Lord under Eli. The word of the Lord was rare in those days; visions were not widespread. 2At that time Eli, whose eyesight had begun to grow dim so that he could not see, was lying down in his room; 3the lamp of God had not yet gone out, and Samuel was lying down in the temple of the Lord, where the ark of God was. 4Then the Lord called, “Samuel! Samuel!” and he said, “Here I am!” 5and ran to Eli, and said, “Here I am, for you called me.” But he said, “I did not call; lie down again.” So he went and lay down. 6The Lord called again, “Samuel!” Samuel got up and went to Eli, and said, “Here I am, for you called me.” But he said, “I did not call, my son; lie down again.” 7Now Samuel did not yet know the Lord, and the word of the Lord had not yet been revealed to him. 8The Lord called Samuel again, a third time. And he got up and went to Eli, and said, “Here I am, for you called me.” Then Eli perceived that the Lord was calling the boy. 9Therefore Eli said to Samuel, “Go, lie down; and if he calls you, you shall say, ‘Speak, Lord, for your servant is listening.’” So Samuel went and lay down in his place. 10Now the Lord came and stood there, calling as before, “Samuel! Samuel!” And Samuel said, “Speak, for your servant is listening.”
11Then the Lord said to Samuel, “See, I am about to do something in Israel that will make both ears of anyone who hears of it tingle. 12On that day I will fulfill against Eli all that I have spoken concerning his house, from beginning to end. 13For I have told him that I am about to punish his house forever, for the iniquity that he knew, because his sons were blaspheming God, and he did not restrain them. 14Therefore I swear to the house of Eli that the iniquity of Eli’s house shall not be expiated by sacrifice or offering forever.” 15Samuel lay there until morning; then he opened the doors of the house of the Lord. Samuel was afraid to tell the vision to Eli. 16But Eli called Samuel and said, “Samuel, my son.” He said, “Here I am.” 17Eli said, “What was it that he told you? Do not hide it from me. May God do so to you and more also, if you hide anything from me of all that he told you.” 18So Samuel told him everything and hid nothing from him. Then he said, “It is the Lord; let him do what seems good to him.”

Offertory Once He Came In Blessing
Helmut Walcha (Germany, 1907-1991)

Once He came in blessing,  all our ills redressing;
Came in likeness lowly,  Son of God most holy;
Bore the cross to save us, Hope and freedom gave us.
Still He comes within us, Still His voice would win us
From the sins that hurt us; Would to truth convert us
From our foolish errors Ere He comes in terrors.

Response
Give thanks with a grateful heart,
Give thanks to the Holy One,
Give thanks because He’s given Jesus Christ, His Son (repeat)
And now let the weak say, “I am strong!”
Let the poor say,
“I am rich, because of what the Lord has done for us!”
Give thanks with a grateful heart,
Give thanks to the Holy One,
Give thanks because He’s given Jesus Christ, His Son.
Give thanks.  Give thanks. ∆

All praise to Jesus' hallowed name,
Who of virgin pure became
True man for us! The angels sing,
As the glad news to earth they bring. (Eleison)

Faith Presbyterian Church	9:30 a.m., January 8, 2012
Let the first tone of the organ be a call to quiet meditation in which all may become aware of God’s presence, and lift up a prayer for yourself and for Faith Church.

Prelude Fantasie on "How Brightly Shines the Morningstar"
Dietrich Buxtehude  (Germany, 1637-1707)
Two verses
(See gray hymnal, p. 357)

Welcome

  Prayer

  Hymn # 463 O Love of God, How Strong and True
vs. 1, 2, 6, 7

Psalter:  Psalm 51:  1 – 6 & 10 - 12 NRSV                  Ron Smith
1Have mercy on me, O God, according to your steadfast love; according to your abundant mercy blot out my transgressions.
2Wash me thoroughly from my iniquity, and cleanse me from my sin.
3For I know my transgressions, and my sin is ever before me.
4Against you, you alone, have I sinned, and done what is evil in your sight, so that you are justified in your sentence and blameless when you pass judgment.
5Indeed, I was born guilty, a sinner when my mother conceived me.
6You desire truth in the inward being; therefore teach me wisdom in my secret heart.
10Create in me a clean heart, O God, and put a new and right spirit within me.
11Do not cast me away from your presence, and do not take your holy spirit from me.
12Restore to me the joy of your salvation, and sustain in me a willing spirit.

Prayer for Illumination                                                       Ron Smith

First Lesson: Matthew 3: 11 - 17 NRSV Ron Smith
11“I baptize you with water for repentance, but one who is more powerful than I is coming after me; I am not worthy to carry his sandals. He will baptize you with the Holy Spirit and fire. 12His winnowing fork is in his hand, and he will clear his threshing floor and will gather his wheat into the granary; but the chaff he will burn with unquenchable fire.”
13Then Jesus came from Galilee to John at the Jordan, to be baptized by him. 14John would have prevented him, saying, “I need to be baptized by you, and do you come to me?” 15But Jesus answered him, “Let it be so now; for it is proper for us in this way to fulfill all righteousness.” Then he consented. 16And when Jesus had been baptized, just as he came up from the water, suddenly the heavens were opened to him and he saw the Spirit of God descending like a dove and alighting on him. 17And a voice from heaven said, “This is my Son, the Beloved, with whom I am well pleased.”

Lector: “This is the Word of God.”

Congregation: “Thanks be to God for His Word.”

Anthem O Son of God the Father Basil Harwood

Children’s Sermon

Hymn # 269 Baptized in Water

Second Lesson:  Acts 10:  44 - 48 NRSV
44While Peter was still speaking, the Holy Spirit fell upon all who heard the word. 45The circumcised believers who had come with Peter were astounded that the gift of the Holy Spirit had been poured out even on the Gentiles, 46for they heard them speaking in tongues and extolling God. Then Peter said, 47“Can anyone withhold the water for baptizing these people who have received the Holy Spirit just as we have?” 48So he ordered them to be baptized in the name of Jesus Christ. Then they invited him to stay for several days.

Sermon “The Spirit of Baptism.” Pastor David Horner

After the sermon children in grades K-6 may leave for children’s choir

  A Renewal of our Baptismal Vows
Sisters and brothers in Christ, our baptism is the sign and seal of our cleansing from sin, and of our being grafted into Christ. Through the birth, life, death, and resurrection of Christ, the power of sin was broken and God’s kingdom entered our world. Through our baptism we were made citizens of God’s kingdom, and freed from the bondage of sin. Let us celebrate that freedom and redemption through the renewal of the promises made at our baptism.
I ask you, therefore, once again to reject sin, to profess your faith in Christ Jesus, and to confess the faith of the church, the faith in which we were baptized.

  Renunciation (read responsively)
Trusting in the gracious mercy of God, do you turn from the ways of sin and renounce evil and its power in the world?
I do.
Do you turn to Jesus Christ and accept him as your Lord and Savior, trusting in his grace and love?
I do.
Will you be Christ’s faithful disciple, obeying his Word and showing his love?
I will, with God’s help.

  Profession (read responsively)
Do you believe in God the Father?
I believe in God, the Father almighty, creator of heaven and earth.
Do you believe in Jesus Christ, the Son of God?
I believe in Jesus Christ, God’s only Son, our Lord, who was conceived by the Holy Spirit, born of the Virgin Mary, suffered under Pontius Pilate, was crucified, died, and was buried; he descended to the dead. On the third day he rose again; he ascended into heaven, he is seated at the right hand of the Father, and he will come to judge the living and the dead.
Do you believe in God the Holy Spirit?
I believe in the Holy Spirit, the holy catholic church, the communion of saints, the forgiveness of sins, the resurrection of the body, and the life everlasting. Amen.

Offertory The Star Proclaims the King Is Here
Flor Peeters  (Belgium, 1903-1986)
The star proclaims the King is here,
but Herod, why this senseless fear?
He takes no realms of earth away,
who gives the realms of heavenly day.
Led by the star, the wisemen find
the Light that lightens all mankind;
The threefold presents which they bring
declare Him God, and Man, and King.

Response
As thy offered gifts most rare
So may we with holy joy,
Pure and free from sin’s alloy,
All our costliest treasures bring,
Christ, to you, our heavenly king.

Prelude Entrée in Forme de Carillon Theodore Dubois

Welcome

  Prayer

  Hymn # 345 Hark! The Herald Angels Sing

Psalter: Psalm 8 NRSV Grieke Toebes
1O Lord, our Sovereign, how majestic is your name in all the earth! You have set your glory above the heavens.
2Out of the mouths of babes and infants you have founded a bulwark because of your foes, to silence the enemy and the avenger.
3When I look at your heavens, the work of your fingers, the moon and the stars that you have established;
4what are human beings that you are mindful of them, mortals that you care for them?
5Yet you have made them a little lower than God, and crowned them with glory and honor.
6You have given them dominion over the works of your hands; you have put all things under their feet,
7all sheep and oxen, and also the beasts of the field,
8the birds of the air, and the fish of the sea, whatever passes along the paths of the seas.
9O Lord, our Sovereign, how majestic is your name in all the earth!

Prayer for Illumination                                                Grieke Toebes

First Lesson: Matthew 2: 13 - 16 NRSV Grieke Toebes
13Now after they had left, an angel of the Lord appeared to Joseph in a dream and said, “Get up, take the child and his mother, and flee to Egypt, and remain there until I tell you; for Herod is about to search for the child, to destroy him.” 14Then Joseph got up, took the child and his mother by night, and went to Egypt, 15and remained there until the death of Herod. This was to fulfill what had been spoken by the Lord through the prophet, “Out of Egypt I have called my son.”
16When Herod saw that he had been tricked by the wise men, he was infuriated, and he sent and killed all the children in and around Bethlehem who were two years old or under, according to the time that he had learned from the wise men.

Children’s Sermon

Hymn # 29 What Child Is This, Who Laid to Rest?
(Christmas Hymnal)

Second Lesson:  Galatians 4:   1 - 11 NRSV
1My point is this: heirs, as long as they are minors, are no better than slaves, though they are the owners of all the property; 2but they remain under guardians and trustees until the date set by the father. 3So with us; while we were minors, we were enslaved to the elemental spirits of the world. 4But when the fullness of time had come, God sent his Son, born of a woman, born under the law, 5in order to redeem those who were under the law, so that we might receive adoption as children. 6And because you are children, God has sent the Spirit of his Son into our hearts, crying, “Abba! Father!” 7So you are no longer a slave but a child, and if a child then also an heir, through God.
8Formerly, when you did not know God, you were enslaved to beings that by nature are not gods. 9Now, however, that you have come to know God, or rather to be known by God, how can you turn back again to the weak and beggarly elemental spirits? How can you want to be enslaved to them again? 10You are observing special days, and months, and seasons, and years. 11I am afraid that my work for you may have been wasted.

the surrender of the will to His purpose;
and all of this gathered up in adoration—
the most selfless emotion of which our nature is capable, and therefore the chief remedy for that self-centeredness which is our original sin and the source of all actual sin.”
Christmas Day

Prelude                                Yuletide Echoes                William Hodson

Lighting of the Candle - We Wait in Hope Joel Raney

Litany (read responsively)                                           Jurgen Honig
Christmas is a time to proclaim.
Joy to the world, the Lord is come!
We proclaim a hope that is stronger than any trial.
Joy to the world, the Lord is come!
We proclaim a victory that is stronger than any defeat.
Joy to the world, the Lord is come!
We proclaim a peace that is stronger than any conflict.
Joy to the world, the Lord is come!
We proclaim a freedom that is stronger than any bondage.
Joy to the world, the Lord is come!

Lighting of the Candles - The Johnson Family, candle lighters
This morning we light all of the candles. The first candle reminds us that Advent is a time to wait upon the Lord with faithful endurance. The second candle reminds us that Advent is a time to watch for God’s presence with hopeful expectation. The third candle reminds us that Advent is a time to prepare for the Lord in heart, soul and mind. The fourth candle reminds us that the One we wait for, watch for, and prepare for is Jesus Christ, who is Emmanuel, meaning God is with us. Today we light the last candle; the Christ candle. This candle reminds us that we are to proclaim the message of Christmas by celebrating what Christ has done, and by sharing it with others. As the light from each candle fills this room, so may the Light of Christ fill our world!

   Prayer
God in heaven, we thank you for guiding us through our Advent journey. Through waiting, watching, preparing, and praising, we are now ready to proclaim. Help us receive the glory of Christmas, as we celebrate and rejoice that you have come to us through the gift of Christ, our Savior and Redeemer. Amen.

Hymn # 24 God Rest Ye Merry, Gentlemen
(Christmas Hymnal)

  Confession of Faith: Nicene Creed (In Unison) Jurgen Honig
We believe in one God, the Father almighty, maker of heaven and earth, of all things visible and invisible.
And in one Lord Jesus Christ, the only Son of God, begotten from the Father before all ages, God from God, Light from Light, true God from true God.
Begotten, not made; of the same essence as the Father. Through him all things were made.
For us and for our salvation he came down from heaven; he became incarnate by the Holy Spirit and the virgin Mary, and was made human. He was crucified for us under Pontius Pilate; he suffered and was buried. The third day he rose again, according to the Scriptures. He ascended to heaven and is seated at the right hand of the Father. He will come again with glory to judge the living and the dead. His kingdom will never end.
And we believe in the Holy Spirit, the Lord, the giver of life. He proceeds from the Father and the Son, and with the Father and the Son is worshiped and glorified. He spoke through the prophets.
We believe in one holy catholic and apostolic church.
We affirm one baptism for the forgiveness of sins.
We look forward to the resurrection of the dead, and to life in the	world to come. Amen.

Scripture:  Matthew 2:  1 - 12                                Jurgen Honig
1In the time of King Herod, after Jesus was born in Bethlehem of Judea, wise men from the East came to Jerusalem, 2asking, “Where is the child who has been born king of the Jews? For we observed his star at its rising, and have come to pay him homage.” 3When King Herod heard this, he was frightened, and all Jerusalem with him; 4and calling together all the chief priests and scribes of the people, he inquired of them where the Messiah was to be born. 5They told him, “In Bethlehem of Judea; for so it has been written by the prophet: 6‘And you, Bethlehem, in the land of Judah, are by no means least among the rulers of Judah; for from you shall come a ruler who is to shepherd my people Israel.’” 7Then Herod secretly called for the wise men and learned from them the exact time when the star had appeared. 8Then he sent them to Bethlehem, saying, “Go and search diligently for the child; and when you have found him, bring me word so that I may also go and pay him homage.”
9When they had heard the king, they set out; and there, ahead of them, went the star that they had seen at its rising, until it stopped over the place where the child was. 10When they saw that the star had stopped, they were overwhelmed with joy. 11On entering the house, they saw the child with Mary his mother; and they knelt down and paid him homage. Then, opening their treasure chests, they offered him gifts of gold, frankincense, and myrrh. 12And having been warned in a dream not to return to Herod, they left for their own country by another road.

Stanza 1:   Mayfawny Bergmann, soloist
Stanza 2:   Adult Choir
Stanza 3, 4 & 5:  Congregation

3 - For he is our childhood’s pattern;
day by day like us he grew;
he was little, weak, and helpless;
tears and smiles like us he knew:
and he feels for all our sadness,
and he shares in all our gladness.

4 – And our eyes at last shall see him, through his own redeeming love, for that child, so dear and gentle, is our Lord in heaven above: and he leads his children on to the place where he has gone.

5 - Not in that poor lowly stable
with the oxen standing by
we shall see him, but in heaven,
set at God’s right hand on high:
there his children gather round
bright like stars, with glory crowned.

First Lesson:  Genesis 3:  1 – 15                                      Chase Kirby

Hymn # 5                   The First Noel     vs. 1, 2 & 6

1 – The first Noel, the angel did say, Was to certain poor shepherds in fields as they lay, In fields where they lay keeping their sheep, On a cold winter’s night that was so deep. Noel, Noel, Noel, Noel. Born is the King of Israel!

2 – They looked up and saw a star Shining in the east beyond them far, And to the earth it gave great light, And so it continued both day and night. Noel, Noel, Noel, Noel. Born is the King of Israel!

6 – Then let us all with one accord Sing praises to our heavenly Lord, That hath made heaven and earth of naught, And with His blood mankind hath bought. Noel, Noel, Noel, Noel. Born is the King of Israel!

Third Lesson:  John 1:  1 – 5 & 9 - 14                             Cheri Sparks

Hymn # 23                There’s A Song in the Air          vs. 1 & 4

1 - There's a song in the air! There's a star in the sky! There's a mother's deep prayer And a baby's low cry! And the star rains its fire while the beautiful sing, For the manger of Bethlehem cradles a King!

4 – We rejoice in the light, And we echo the song That comes down through the night From the heavenly throng. Ay! we shout to the lovely evangel they bring, And we greet in his cradle our Savior and King!

  Hymn # 348 Away in the Manger

1 – Away in a manger, no crib for a bed,
the little Lord Jesus laid down his sweet head;
the stars in the sky looked down where he lay;
the little Lord Jesus asleep on the hay.

2 – The cattle are lowing, the baby awakes,
but little Lord Jesus, no crying he makes.
I love you, Lord Jesus: look down from on high
and stay by my side until morning is nigh.

3 – Be near me, Lord Jesus; I ask you to stay
close by me forever and love me, I pray.
Bless all the dear children in your tender care;
prepare us for heaven to live with you there.

	Giving and Receiving of the Bread and Cup
The inside cups contain grape juice; the outer cups contain wine.

  Prayer of Consecration (in unison)
Almighty Lord: we are thankful for all the benefits given us in this bread and wine, this body and blood. As the grain was harvested and the grapes gathered for this food, so may your church in every place be gathered into your household. And as the grain was ground and the grapes crushed, so may our lives be spent in your service, until you return in triumph to gather to yourself the harvest and call us to the marriage feast of the lamb. Amen.

Hymn # 337 Joy to the World! the Lord Is Come

1 – Joy to the world! the Lord is come: let earth receive her King.
Let every heart prepare him room, and heaven and nature

2 – Joy to the earth! the Savior reigns: let all their songs employ,
while fields and floods, rocks, hills, and plains repeat the sounding joy, repeat the sounding joy, repeat, repeat the sounding joy.

3 - No more let sin and sorrow grow nor thorns infest the ground; he
comes to make this blessings flow far as the curse is found, far
as the curse is found, far as, far as the curse is found.

4 - He rules the world with truth and grace, and makes the nations

Litany (read responsively)                             Leonard Sidharta
Advent is a time to praise.
Praise the Lord, O my soul, and forget not all his
benefits.
During Advent we remember God’s past faithfulness.
Praise the Lord, O my soul, and forget not all his
benefits.
During Advent we remember God’s present goodness.
Praise the Lord, O my soul, and forget not all his
Praise the Lord, O my soul, and forget not all his
benefits.

Lighting of the Candles - The Sandel Family, candle lighters
This morning we light four candles. The first candle reminds us that during Advent we wait upon the promises of the Lord. The second candle reminds us to watch for God’s presence with expectant eyes and anxious hearts. The third candle reminds us to prepare ourselves to receive the gift of the promised Savior. As we light the fourth candle, we are reminded that Advent is a time to give praise for what God has done, for what God is currently doing and for what God will bring to completion. As the light of Advent grows brighter, it reminds us that we move closer to receiving the gift of a Savior.

	Refrain – the Choir
God in heaven, we look to you amidst a world filled with darkness. Help us to seek the light of our truth, as we remember your promises and offer our praise to you. Amen.

1To you, O Lord, I call; my rock, do not refuse to hear me, for if you are silent to me, I shall be like those who go down to the Pit.
2Hear the voice of my supplication, as I cry to you for help, as I lift up my hands toward your most holy sanctuary.
6Blessed be the Lord, for he has heard the sound of my pleadings.
7The Lord is my strength and my shield; in him my heart trusts; so I am helped, and my heart exults, and with my song I give thanks to him.
8The Lord is the strength of his people; he is the saving refuge of his anointed.
9O save your people, and bless your heritage; be their shepherd, and carry them forever.

First Lesson: Matthew 1: 18 - 25 NRSV Leonard Sidharta
18Now the birth of Jesus the Messiah took place in this way. When his mother Mary had been engaged to Joseph, but before they lived together, she was found to be with child from the Holy Spirit. 19Her husband Joseph, being a righteous man and unwilling to expose her to public disgrace, planned to dismiss her quietly. 20But just when he had resolved to do this, an angel of the Lord appeared to him in a dream and said, “Joseph, son of David, do not be afraid to take Mary as your wife, for the child conceived in her is from the Holy Spirit. 21She will bear a son, and you are to name him Jesus, for he will save his people from their sins.” 22All this took place to fulfill what had been spoken by the Lord through the prophet: 23“Look, the virgin shall conceive and bear a son, and they shall name him Emmanuel,” which means, “God is with us.” 24When Joseph awoke from sleep, he did as the angel of the Lord commanded him; he took her as his wife, 25but had no marital relations with her until she had borne a son; and he named him Jesus.

Faith Presbyterian Church	9:30 a.m., December 11, 2011
Let the first tone of the organ be a call to quiet meditation in which all may become aware of God’s presence, and lift up a prayer for yourself and for Faith Church.

Wind through the olive trees softly did blow
'Round little Bethlehem long, long ago.
Then from the happy skies Angels bent low
Singing their song of joy, long, long ago

Welcome

Lighting of the Candle - We Wait in Hope Joel Raney

Choral Prelude – the Choir and Bell Choir

Litany (read responsively)                                 Bert Chapman
Advent is a time to prepare
Prepare the way of the Lord; make straight the way
for our God.
During Advent we prepare our eyes to see the light of
Christ.
Prepare the way of the Lord; make straight the way
for our God.
During Advent we prepare our hearts to receive the Word
of Christ.
Prepare the way of the Lord; make straight the way
for our God.
During Advent we prepare to share the joy of Christ.
Prepare the way of the Lord; make straight the way
for our God.
During Advent we prepare to embrace the promise of
Christ.
Prepare the way of the Lord; make straight the way
for our God.

	Lighting of the Candles - Sededji Family, candle lighters
This morning we light three candles. The first candle reminds us that Advent is a time to wait upon the Lord. We wait for the unfolding of God’s plan in accordance with God’s time. The second candle reminds us that Advent is also a time to watch. During Advent, we eagerly watch for God’s presence and work in our world. As we light the third candle we also remember that Advent is a time to prepare. During Advent, we prepare ourselves in heart, soul and strength to welcome our Lord and Savior, Jesus Christ, who was, and is, and is to come. Let each of us ask God to prepare us to celebrate the glory of Christmas.

	Refrain – the Choir

  Prayer
God in heaven, as we continue our Advent journey, help us to be people who wait for you, watch for you, and through your Spirit be prepared for you. Continue to shine your light in our lives as we look at all you have done, all you are doing, and all you will do. Amen.

  Hymn # 354 Angels from the Realms of Glory

Psalter:  Psalm 27:  7 - 14 NRSV                           Bert Chapman
7Hear, O Lord, when I cry aloud, be gracious to me and answer me!
8“Come,” my heart says, “seek his face!” Your face, Lord, do I seek.
9Do not hide your face from me. Do not turn your servant away in anger, you who have been my help. Do not cast me off, do not forsake me, O God of my salvation!
10If my father and mother forsake me, the Lord will take me up.
11Teach me your way, O Lord, and lead me on a level path because of my enemies.
12Do not give me up to the will of my adversaries, for false witnesses have risen against me, and they are breathing out violence.
13I believe that I shall see the goodness of the Lord in the land of the living.
14Wait for the Lord; be strong, and let your heart take courage; wait for the Lord!

Prayer for Illumination                                          Bert Chapman

First Lesson: Isaiah 7: 10 - 16 NRSV Bert Chapman
10Again the Lord spoke to Ahaz, saying, 11Ask a sign of the Lord your God; let it be deep as Sheol or high as heaven. 12But Ahaz said, I will not ask, and I will not put the Lord to the test. 13Then Isaiah said: “Hear then, O house of David! Is it too little for you to weary mortals, that you weary my God also? 14Therefore the Lord himself will give you a sign. Look, the young woman is with child and shall bear a son, and shall name him Immanuel. 15He shall eat curds and honey by the time he knows how to refuse the evil and choose the good. 16For before the child knows how to refuse the evil and choose the good, the land before whose two kings you are in dread will be deserted.

Lector: “This is the Word of God.”

Congregation: “Thanks be to God for His Word.”

Anthem                             The Promise                    Russell Nagy

Children’s Sermon

Hymn # 12 Gentle Mary Laid Her Child
(Christmas Hymnal)

Second Lesson:  Luke 1:  46 – 55 NRSV
46And Mary said, “My soul magnifies the Lord, 47and my spirit rejoices in God my Savior, 48for he has looked with favor on the lowliness of his servant. Surely, from now on all generations will call me blessed; 49for the Mighty One has done great things for me, and holy is his name. 50His mercy is for those who fear him from generation to generation. 51He has shown strength with his arm; he has scattered the proud in the thoughts of their hearts. 52He has brought down the powerful from their thrones, and lifted up the lowly; 53he has filled the hungry with good things, and sent the rich away empty. 54He has helped his servant Israel, in remembrance of his mercy, 55according to the promise he made to our ancestors, to Abraham and to his descendants forever.”

Sermon “The Song of Mary” Pastor David Horner

When blossoms flow red 'mid the snows upon a winter night,
Was born the Child, the Christmas Rose,
the King of love and light.
The angels sang, the shepherds sang,
the grateful earth rejoiced!
And at His blessed birth the stars their exultation voiced.
O come let us adore Him..........
Again the heart with rapture glows to greet the holy night
That gave the world its Christmas Rose,
the King of love and light.
Let every voice acclaim His name, the grateful chorus swell;
From paradise to earth He came,
that we with Him might dwell.
O come let us adore Him...........

Choral Prelude – the Choir and Bell Choir

Litany (read responsively)                                  Ron Smith
Advent is a time to watch.
We watch in hope for the Lord; O come, Emmanuel.
During Advent we watch for hope in the midst of despair.
We watch in hope for the Lord; O come, Emmanuel.
During Advent watch for forgiveness in the midst of rebellion.
We watch in hope for the Lord; O come, Emmanuel.
During Advent we watch for peace in the midst of conflict.
We watch in hope for the Lord; O come, Emmanuel.
During Advent we watch for the presence of God in the midst of a fallen world.
We watch in hope for the Lord; O come, Emmanuel.

Lighting of the Candles The Kain Family, candlelighters
This morning we light two candles. The first candle reminds us that Advent is a time of waiting. We wait in anticipation for God to fulfill every promise set forth in the Bible. The second candle reminds us that Advent is also a time of watching. We watch with expectant eyes, trusting that God is active, present and constantly at work, leading all of creation toward the plan of redemption. As we light the second candle, we ask for faith to watch for God’s presence and open eyes to see all that God is doing.

	Refrain – the Choir

   Prayer
God in heaven, as we learn to wait in faith, help us now to watch in expectation. Open our eyes that we might see the ways you are at work around us, within us and through us. Amen.

Prayer for Illumination                                             Ron Smith

First Lesson: John 1: 19 - 23 NRSV Ron Smith
19This is the testimony given by John when the Jews sent priests and Levites from Jerusalem to ask him, “Who are you?” 20He confessed and did not deny it, but confessed, “I am not the Messiah.” 21And they asked him, “What then? Are you Elijah?” He said, “I am not.” “Are you the prophet?” He answered, “No.” 22Then they said to him, “Who are you? Let us have an answer for those who sent us. What do you say about yourself?” 23He said, “I am the voice of one crying out in the wilderness, ‘Make straight the way of the Lord,’” as the prophet Isaiah said.

   Hymn # 31      Thou Didst Leave Thy Throne    vs. 1 - 3
(Christmas Hymnal)

Second Lesson:  Isaiah 40:  1 - 11 NRSV
1Comfort, O comfort my people, says your God. 2Speak tenderly to Jerusalem, and cry to her that she has served her term, that her penalty is paid, that she has received from the Lord’s hand double for all her sins.
3A voice cries out: “In the wilderness prepare the way of the Lord, make straight in the desert a highway for our God. 4Every valley shall be lifted up, and every mountain and hill be made low; the uneven ground shall become level, and the rough places a plain. 5Then the glory of the Lord shall be revealed, and all people shall see it together, for the mouth of the Lord has spoken.” 6A voice says, “Cry out!” And I said, “What shall I cry?” All people are grass, their constancy is like the flower of the field. 7The grass withers, the flower fades, when the breath of the Lord blows upon it; surely the people are grass. 8The grass withers, the flower fades; but the word of our God will stand forever.
9Get you up to a high mountain, O Zion, herald of good tidings; lift up your voice with strength, O Jerusalem, herald of good tidings, lift it up, do not fear; say to the cities of Judah, “Here is your God!” 10See, the Lord God comes with might, and his arm rules for him; his reward is with him, and his recompense before him. 11He will feed his flock like a shepherd; he will gather the lambs in his arms, and carry them in his bosom, and gently lead the mother sheep.

In Unison
14When the hour came, he took his place at the table, and the apostles with him. 19Then he took a loaf of bread, and when he had given thanks, he broke it and gave it to them, saying, “This is my body, which is given for you. Do this in remembrance of me.” 20And he did the same with the cup after supper, saying, “This cup that is poured out for you is the new covenant in my blood..

the outer cups contain wine.

Amen.

Worship
…is the quickening of conscience by God’s holiness;
the nourishment of mind with His truth;
the purifying of imagination by His beauty;
the opening of the heart to His love;
the surrender of the will to His purpose;
and all of this gathered up in adoration—
the most selfless emotion of which our nature is capable, and therefore the chief remedy for that self-centeredness which is our original sin and the source of all actual sin.”
-William Temple

              Jubilee Christmas

Jubilee Christmas is coming! We will be hosting 18 families this year. The parents will be invited to select gifts for their children, so they can be the "heroes" on Christmas morning. We will be celebrating Jubilee Christmas on Saturday, December 10 at 10 a.m. Breakfast will be served at 9:00 for guests and hosts, and all helpers are invited.
We need a lot of help to make this a special day for our guests. Here's how you can help:
1. Pray. That it will be a day filled with love and blessings.
2. Toys. There's a Christmas tree in the fellowship hall with tags representing gifts ($25-30). There's also a bowl with tags for stocking stuffers ($1-5). If the toy needs batteries, please include 2 sets. Attach the tag to the unwrapped gift and place it in the box in the fellowship hall no later than Sunday, December 4.
3. Cookies and Refreshments*.
4. Family Gifts*. Things like laundry detergent and paper products.
5. Card Tables*.
6. Volunteers*.
a. Each family needs a host.
b. Setup, cleanup, and general help.
7. Money. This helps us to pay for the hams and gift certificates provided by LUM, a hat and mittens for each child, and a gift for each family, as well as purchase any last-minute toys or supplies. Place your gift in the morning offering or in the donations box in the fellowship hall.
*Signup sheets for these are in the fellowship hall.
Through Jubilee Christmas, we not only serve others in the community, but also grow as a community of believers in the Lord. We appreciate your help - Thanks!

Pastor's Pen

This Christmas will be the 9th occasion in my lifetime that Christmas will fall on a Sunday. Six of those have occurred during my career as a Pastor. Many of you may not realize the “crisis” that having Christmas on a Sunday brings to church leaders. There are decisions that they think must be made, and, if they decide to eliminate or scale down the normal Sunday services and Sunday School, there is usually a bit of guilt felt by them in accommodating to the mercantile culture and allowing time for families to exchange gifts. After all, how does one rationalize canceling Worship in order to allow Christians to celebrate the birth of our Savior?

Some of that “crisis” is not felt by the Worship leaders at Faith Church because we have a Christmas Service regardless of what day Christmas falls on. Our pleasant task was to choose from the “smorgasbord” of services that we could schedule to celebrate the birth of Jesus. Of course, we will have our Christmas Eve Service on Saturday the 24th at 7:00.

But then we thought about what we would do on Christmas Day. Should we have the “regular” service at 9:30 and then have the Christmas Service at 11:00? We thought that might be a bit too much and cause people to make decisions about which service to attend. So, we decided to do either the 9:30 service or the 11:00 service. Because of having the Christmas Eve Communion service the night before, we thought that retaining the 11:00 Christmas Service would be better. And many of us really like the “special” nature of the format of the Christmas Service.

So, on Christmas Eve we will meet at 7:00 for the service of Lessons and Carols and Communion. We will also have a reception following the service to greet visiting ex-members and friends. Then on Sunday, we will have our annual Christmas Service at 11:00. We hope you agree with our decisions and we hope that we will see you and yours here at Faith Church sometime during the Christmas Season.

I also hope and pray that our Worship opportunities this Christmas Season will assist you as you lead your families in a true celebration of the incarnation of our God as Jesus, the Messiah. None of us understand the mechanics or biology of the doctrine of the Incarnation, but it is a part of what we accept and believe as Christians. The pre-existent Son of God, one of the eternally existent persons of the trinity, became a human being named Jesus. Through his life, words, and deeds, he revealed God and God’s will to us. In his death he reconciled all who believe in Him to God. In Him we have life, and forgiveness and eternal life.

These are the things we celebrate at Christmas. The legend of Santa (St. Nicklaus) Claus and other Christmas legends merely assist us in celebrating the one truth written about by John the Apostle: “…God so loved the world that he gave his one and only Son, that whoever believes in him shall not perish but have eternal life. For God did not send his son into the world to condemn the world, but to save the world through him.”

Diane and I wish each of you a very Christ-centered Christmas and a New Year with many opportunities to serve our God.

Your Pastor,

Thank You

Dear Friends at Faith,

Thank you all for your prayers, flowers, cards, food and visits you surrounded me with during the last couple of weeks.
It made me feel very special, as well as reminding me again how wonderful it is to belong to the household of God.

Homework Club

December will be the second month for our Homework Club at Klondike Elementary School. We have been having a good time and are getting to know some of the students. We can still use a few more volunteers, and it is not complicated. Sometimes all that is needed is for an adult to listen to students read stories and help them with their pronunciations as they sound out words. Other times we help students compose sentences using their vocabulary words. Basic math skills are also utilized as we watch students add, subtract, and multiply. We do hope that more of you will help us reach out to the children in our community and that all of you will pray for this ministry. The hours of this ministry are Tuesdays and Thursdays from 3:45 to 5:00. To volunteer, call Lou Ann Johnston at 583-0739 or email her at ljohnston@tipmont.net

Ho Ho Ho

The Christmas trees have sprouted in almost every store in Lafayette, the Sunday ads are featuring toys, and a freeze is predicted, so perhaps it is time to think of Christmas. Christmas at Faith Presbyterian wouldn’t be the same without Jubilee Christmas. Jubilee Christmas will be December 10th. Jubilee requires many people, many cookies, many toys, and many prayers. Please look for sign- up sheets in the fellowship hall. The tree with toy requests will be up on the second Sunday in November. LUM sends out invitations to families who have required assistance throughout the year. This year the invitations went out to over a thousand families. Please help us make a merry Christmas for 18 families who are in need.

Faith Presbyterian Church	9:30 a.m., November 27, 2011
Let the first tone of the organ be a call to quiet meditation in which all may become aware of God’s presence, and lift up a prayer for yourself and for Faith Church.

Prelude Hymn Preludes by Wilbur Held
We Gather Together
Ye Watchers and Ye Holy Ones

Welcome

Lighting of the Candle - We Wait in Hope Joel Raney

Choral Prelude – the Choir and Bell Choir

Litany (read responsively)                          Michael Bergmann
Advent is a time to wait.
We wait in hope for the Lord; he is our help and our
shield.
During Advent we wait for light in the darkness.
We wait in hope for the Lord; he is our help and our
shield.
During Advent we wait for freedom from captivity.
We wait in hope for the Lord; he is our help and our
shield.
During Advent we wait for comfort in sorrow.
We wait in hope for the Lord; he is our help and our
shield.
During Advent we wait for power in weakness.
We wait in hope for the Lord; he is our help and our
shield.

Lighting of the Candles - The Sidharta Family, candle lighters
This morning we light the first candle. The first candle reminds us that, as we wait upon the Lord, God’s light never ceases to shine, God’s will never ceases to unfold, and God’s grace never ceases to be felt. As we begin the journey of Advent, may we learn to wait upon the Lord with hopeful expectation by celebrating all God has done and anticipating all He will do.

	Refrain – the Choir

   Prayer
God in heaven, as we begin this season of Advent, we pray that you will teach us to wait with patience, endurance, and trust. Holding to the eternal promises revealed to us through the power of your Word, we ask that you remind us of your everlasting presence. Amen

Hymn # 328       O Come, O Come, Immanuel   vs. 1 & 5

Psalter:  Psalm 80:  1 - 14 NRSV                         Michael Bergmann
1Give ear, O Shepherd of Israel, you who lead Joseph like a flock! You who are enthroned upon the cherubim, shine forth
2before Ephraim and Benjamin and Manasseh. Stir up your might, and come to save us!
3Restore us, O God; let your face shine, that we may be saved.
4O Lord God of hosts, how long will you be angry with your people’s prayers?
5You have fed them with the bread of tears, and given them tears to drink in full measure.
6You make us the scorn of our neighbors; our enemies laugh among themselves.
7Restore us, O God of hosts; let your face shine, that we may be saved.
8You brought a vine out of Egypt; you drove out the nations and planted it.
9You cleared the ground for it; it took deep root and filled the land.
10The mountains were covered with its shade, the mighty cedars with its branches;
11it sent out its branches to the sea, and its shoots to the River.
12Why then have you broken down its walls, so that all who pass along the way pluck its fruit?
13The boar from the forest ravages it, and all that move in the field feed on it.
14Turn again, O God of hosts; look down from heaven, and see; have regard for this vine,

Prayer for Illumination                                   Michael Bergmann

First Lesson: Isaiah 64: 1 - 9 NRSV Michael Bergmann
1O that you would tear open the heavens and come down, so that the mountains would quake at your presence— 2as when fire kindles brushwood and the fire causes water to boil— to make your name known to your adversaries, so that the nations might tremble at your presence! 3When you did awesome deeds that we did not expect, you came down, the mountains quaked at your presence. 4From ages past no one has heard, no ear has perceived, no eye has seen any God besides you, who works for those who wait for him. 5You meet those who gladly do right, those who remember you in your ways. But you were angry, and we sinned; because you hid yourself we transgressed.
6We have all become like one who is unclean, and all our righteous deeds are like a filthy cloth. We all fade like a leaf, and our iniquities, like the wind, take us away. 7There is no one who calls on your name, or attempts to take hold of you; for you have hidden your face from us, and have delivered us into the hand of our iniquity. 8Yet, O Lord, you are our Father; we are the clay, and you are our potter; we are all the work of your hand. 9Do not be exceedingly angry, O Lord, and do not remember iniquity forever. Now consider, we are all your people.

Lector: “This is the Word of God.”

Congregation: “Thanks be to God for His Word.”

Anthem We Gather Together Handbell Choir

Children’s Sermon

Hymn # 342 Of the Father’s Love Begotten

Second Lesson:  Mark 13:  24 - 37 NRSV
24“But in those days, after that suffering, the sun will be darkened,
and the moon will not give its light, 25and the stars will be falling from heaven, and the powers in the heavens will be shaken.
26Then they will see ‘the Son of Man coming in clouds’ with great power and glory. 27Then he will send out the angels, and gather his elect from the four winds, from the ends of the earth to the ends of heaven.
28“From the fig tree learn its lesson: as soon as its branch becomes tender and puts forth its leaves, you know that summer is near. 29So also, when you see these things taking place, you know that he is near, at the very gates. 30Truly I tell you, this generation will not pass away until all these things have taken place. 31Heaven and earth will pass away, but my words will not pass away.
32“But about that day or hour no one knows, neither the angels in heaven, nor the Son, but only the Father. 33Beware, keep alert; for you do not know when the time will come. 34It is like a man going on a journey, when he leaves home and puts his slaves in charge, each with his work, and commands the doorkeeper to be on the watch. 35Therefore, keep awake—for you do not know when the master of the house will come, in the evening, or at midnight, or at cockcrow, or at dawn, 36or else he may find you asleep when he comes suddenly. 37And what I say to you I say to all: Keep awake.”

Sermon “Be Ready for the Master” Pastor David Horner

After the sermon youth may leave for choir

Gathering of Tithes and Offerings

Offertory Comfort, Comfort, Ye My People Georg Boehm

Response
Blessing and glory and wisdom and power
Be to the Savior again and again.
Might and thanksgiving and honor forever

Worship
…is the quickening of conscience by God’s holiness;
the nourishment of mind with His truth;
the purifying of imagination by His beauty;
the opening of the heart to His love;
the surrender of the will to His purpose;
and all of this gathered up in adoration—
the most selfless emotion of which our nature is capable, and therefore the chief remedy for that self-centeredness which is our original sin and the source of all actual sin.”
-William Temple

Welcome
To all who are weary and seek rest; to all who mourn and long for comfort; to all who struggle and desire victory; to all who sin and need a Savior; to all who are idle and look for service; to all who are strangers and want fellowship; to all who hunger and thirst after righteousness; and to whosoever will come--this church opens wide her doors and offers her welcome in the name of Jesus Christ her Lord.
