The Order for the Worship of God

Follow along by watching our livestream on our YouTube channel at 930a on Sunday.

Let the first tone of the organ be a call to quiet meditation in which all may become aware of God’s presence, and lift up a prayer for yourself and for Faith Church.

Prelude          Mary Heller

Welcome and Greeting

Preparation of Our Hearts

Call to Worship

Hymn     # 504     Holy God, We Praise Your Name          (Gray Psalter Hymnal)

Confession of Sin and Assurance of Pardon

Psalter     Psalm 25:4-9     (ESV)          Grieke Toebes

4Make me to know your ways, O Lord; teach me your paths.
5Lead me in your truth and teach me, for you are the God of my salvation; for you I wait all the day long.

6Remember your mercy, O Lord, and your steadfast love, for they have been from of old.
7Remember not the sins of my youth or my transgressions; according to your steadfast love remember me, for the sake of your goodness, O Lord!

8Good and upright is the Lord; therefore he instructs sinners in the way.

9He leads the humble in what is right, and teaches the humble his way.

Prayer for Illumination

Epistle Reading     1 Corinthians 2:1-5, 9-16

2 And I, when I came to you, brothers, did not come proclaiming to you the testimony of God with lofty speech or wisdom. 2For I decided to know nothing among you except Jesus Christ and him crucified. 3And I was with you in weakness and in fear and much trembling, 4and my speech and my message were not in plausible words of wisdom, but in demonstration of the Spirit and of power, 5so that your faith might not rest in the wisdom of men but in the power of God.

       9But, as it is written,

“What no eye has seen, nor ear heard,

nor the heart of man imagined, what God has prepared for

       those who love him”—

10these things God has revealed to us through the Spirit. For the Spirit searches everything, even the depths of God. 11For who knows a person's thoughts except the spirit of that person, which is in him? So also no one comprehends the thoughts of God except the Spirit of God. 12Now we have received not the spirit of the world, but the Spirit who is from God, that we might understand the things freely given us by God. 13And we impart this in words not taught by human wisdom but taught by the Spirit, interpreting spiritual truths to those who are spiritual.

14The natural person does not accept the things of the Spirit of God, for they are folly to him, and he is not able to understand them because they are spiritually discerned. 15The spiritual person judges all things, but is himself to be judged by no one. 16“For who has understood the mind of the Lord so as to instruct him?” But we have the mind of Christ.

Lector: This is the Word of the Lord.

Congregation: Thanks be to God for His Word.

Special Music     Our Great God          Pastor Andrew Winter

Eternal God, unchanging,

Mysterious and unknown;

Your boundless love, unfailing,

In grace and mercy shown.

Bright seraphim in ceaseless flight

Around Your glorious throne;

They raise their voices day

And night in praise to You alone!

Hallelujah! Glory be to our great God!

Hallelujah! Glory be to our great God!

Lord, we are weak and frail

And are helpless in the storm;

Surround us with Your angels

And hold us in Your arms.

Our cold and ruthless enemy,

His pleasure is our harm.

Rise up, O Lord, and he will flee

Before our sovereign God.

Let every creature in the sea

And every flying bird,

Let every mountain, every field,

And valley of the earth,

Let all the moons and all the stars

In all the universe

Sing praises to the living God

Who rules them by His Word.

Children’s Sermon

Hymn     # 24     Open My Eyes That I May See          (Supplemental Hymnal)

Gospel Reading     John 14:16-17, 26; John 16:5-15

16And I will ask the Father, and he will give you another Helper, to be with you forever, 17even the Spirit of truth, whom the world cannot receive, because it neither sees him nor knows him. You know him, for he dwells with you and will be in you.

26But the Helper, the Holy Spirit, whom the Father will send in my name, he will teach you all things and bring to your remembrance all that I have said to you.

5But now I am going to him who sent me, and none of you asks me, ‘Where are you going?’ 6But because I have said these things to you, sorrow has filled your heart. 7Nevertheless, I tell you the truth: it is to your advantage that I go away, for if I do not go away, the Helper will not come to you. But if I go, I will send him to you. 8And when he comes, he will convict the world concerning sin and righteousness and judgment: 9concerning sin, because they do not believe in me; 10concerning righteousness, because I go to the Father, and you will see me no longer; 11concerning judgment, because the ruler of this world is judged.

12“I still have many things to say to you, but you cannot bear them now. 13When the Spirit of truth comes, he will guide you into all the truth, for he will not speak on his own authority, but whatever he hears he will speak, and he will declare to you the things that are to come. 14He will glorify me, for he will take what is mine and declare it to you. 15All that the Father has is mine; therefore I said that he will take what is mine and declare it to you.
