The Order for the Worship of God

Follow along by watching our livestream on our YouTube channel at 930a on Sunday.

Let the first tone of the organ be a call to quiet meditation in which all may become aware of God’s presence, and lift up a prayer for yourself and for Faith Church.

Welcome and Greeting

Call to Worship - Candle Lighting     The Winter Family

In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God, and the Word was God.

He was in the beginning with God. All things came into being through him.

In him was life, and the life was the light of all people.

The light shines in the darkness, and the darkness did not overcome it.

The true light, which enlightens everyone, was coming into the world.

And the Word became flesh and lived among us, and we have seen his glory, the glory as of a father’s only son, full of grace and truth.

— John 1:1-5, 9, 14     (NRSV)

Carol     # 13     I Heard the Bells on Christmas Day

I heard the bells on Christmas day

Their old familiar carols play

And wild and sweet the words repeat

Of peace on earth, good will to men

I thought how, as the day had come

The belfries of all Christendom

Had roll’d along th’un broken song

Of peace on earth, good will to men

And in despair I bow’d my head

There is no peace on earth, I said

For hate is strong and mocks the song

Of peace on earth, good will to men

Then pealed the bells more loud and deep

God is not dead, nor doth he sleep

The wrong shall fail, the right prevail

With peace on earth, good will to men

Confession of Faith - Nicene Creed     In Unison

We believe in one God, the Father Almighty, Maker of heaven and earth, of all things visible and invisible.

And in one Lord Jesus Christ, the only Son of God, begotten from the Father before all ages; God from God, Light from Light, True God from True God, begotten, not made, of the same essence as the Father. Through him all things were made. For us and for our salvation he came down from heaven; he became incarnate by the Holy Spirit and the Virgin Mary, and was made human. He was crucified for us under Pontius Pilate; he suffered and was buried. The third day he rose again, according to the Scriptures. He ascended to heaven and is seated at the right hand of the Father. He will come again with glory to judge the living and the dead. His kingdom will never end.

And we believe in the Holy Spirit, the Lord, the giver of life. He proceeds from the Father and the Son, and with the Father and the Son is worshiped and glorified. He spoke through the prophets. We believe in one holy catholic and apostolic church. We affirm one baptism for the forgiveness of sins. We look forward to the resurrection of the dead, and to life in the world to come. Amen.

Special Music     The Cradle          Christmas Day Choir

He smiles within his cradle

A babe with face so bright

It beams most like a mirror

Against a blaze of light

This babe so burning bright

This babe we now declare to you

Is Jesus Christ our Lord

He brings both peace and heartiness

Haste, haste with one accord

To feast with Christ our Lord

And who would rock the cradle

Wherein this infant lies

Must rock with easy motion

And watch with humble eyes

Like Mary pure and wise

O Jesus, dearest babe of all

And dearest babe of mine

Thy love is great, thy limbs are small

O flood this heart of mine

With overflow from thine

Prayer for Illumination          Ron Smith

Old Testament Reading     Isaiah 9:2-7     (NRSVUE)

2The people who walked in darkness have seen a great light; those who lived in a land of deep darkness—on them light has shined. 3You have multiplied exultation; you have increased its joy; they rejoice before you as with joy at the harvest, as people exult when dividing plunder. 4For the yoke of their burden and the bar across their shoulders, the rod of their oppressor, you have broken as on the day of Midian. 5For all the boots of the tramping warriors and all the garments rolled in blood shall be burned as fuel for the fire. 6For a child has been born for us, a son given to us; authority rests upon his shoulders, and he is named Wonderful Counselor, Mighty God, Everlasting Father, Prince of Peace. 7Great will be his authority, and there shall be endless peace for the throne of David and his kingdom. He will establish and uphold it with justice and with righteousness from this time onward and forevermore. The zeal of the Lord of hosts will do this.

Lector: This is the Word of the Lord.

Congregation: Thanks be to God for His Word.

Carol     # 334     The Prophets Came to Israel          (Gray Psalter Hymnal)

New Testament Reading     Titus 2:11-14

11For the grace of God has appeared, bringing salvation to all, 12training us to renounce impiety and worldly passions and in the present age to live lives that are self-controlled, upright, and godly, 13while we wait for the blessed hope and the manifestation of the glory of our great God and Savior, Jesus Christ. 14He it is who gave himself for us that he might redeem us from all iniquity and purify for himself a people of his own who are zealous for good deeds.

Carol     # 356     Go, Tell It on the Mountain

Go, tell it on the mountain

Over the hills and everywhere

Go, tell it on the mountain

That Jesus Christ is born

While shepherds kept their watching

O’er silent flocks by night

Behold, throughout the heavens

There shone a holy light

The shepherds feared and trembled

When lo! Above the earth

Rang out the angel chorus

That hailed our savior’s birth

Down in a lowly stable

The humble Christ was born

And God sent us salvation

That blessed Christmas morn

Benediction
