The Order for the Worship of God

Follow along by watching our livestream on our YouTube channel at 930a on Sunday.

Let the first tone of the organ be a call to quiet meditation in which all may become aware of God’s presence, and lift up a prayer for yourself and for Faith Church.

Hymn     # 253     Praise to the Lord, the Almighty          (Gray Psalter Hymnal)

Confession of Sin and Assurance of Pardon

Psalter:     Psalm 40:1-11     (NRSVUE)          Pat Kain

1I waited patiently for the LORD; he inclined to me and heard my cry.

2He drew me up from the pit of destruction, out of the miry bog, and set my feet upon a rock, making my steps secure.

3He put a new song in my mouth, a song of praise to our God. Many will see and fear, and put their trust in the LORD.

4Blessed is the man who makes the LORD his trust, who does not turn to the proud, to those who go astray after a lie!

5You have multiplied, O LORD my God, your wondrous deeds and your thoughts toward us; none can compare with you! I will proclaim and tell of them, yet they are more than can be told.

6In sacrifice and offering you have not delighted, but you have given me an open ear. Burnt offering and sin offering you have not required.

7Then I said, “Behold, I have come; in the scroll of the book it is written of me:

8I delight to do your will, O my God; your law is within my heart.”

9I have told the glad news of deliverance in the great congregation; behold, I have not restrained my lips, as you know, O LORD.

10I have not hidden your deliverance within my heart; I have spoken of your faithfulness and your salvation; I have not concealed your steadfast love and your faithfulness from the great congregation.

11As for you, O LORD, you will not restrain your mercy from me; your steadfast love and your faithfulness will ever preserve me!

Prayer for Illumination

Old Testament Reading     Numbers 18:1-8

18 So the LORD said to Aaron, “You and your sons and your father's house with you shall bear iniquity connected with the sanctuary, and you and your sons with you shall bear iniquity connected with your priesthood. 2And with you bring your brothers also, the tribe of Levi, the tribe of your father, that they may join you and minister to you while you and your sons with you are before the tent of the testimony. 3They shall keep guard over you and over the whole tent, but shall not come near to the vessels of the sanctuary or to the altar lest they, and you, die. 4They shall join you and keep guard over the tent of meeting for all the service of the tent, and no outsider shall come near you. 5And you shall keep guard over the sanctuary and over the altar, that there may never again be wrath on the people of Israel. 6And behold, I have taken your brothers the Levites from among the people of Israel. They are a gift to you, given to the LORD, to do the service of the tent of meeting. 7And you and your sons with you shall guard your priesthood for all that concerns the altar and that is within the veil; and you shall serve. I give your priesthood as a gift, and any outsider who comes near shall be put to death.”

8Then the LORD spoke to Aaron, “Behold, I have given you charge of the contributions made to me, all the consecrated things of the people of Israel. I have given them to you as a portion and to your sons as a perpetual due.

Lector: This is the Word of the Lord.

Choral Anthem     Rock of ages

Rock of ages cleft for me

Let me hide myself in Thee

Let the water and the blood

From Thy wounded side which flowed

Be for sin the double cure

Save from wrath and make me pure

Rock of ages cleft for me

Let me hide myself in Thee.

Not the labors of my hands

Can fulfill Thy law’s demands

Could my zeal forever grow

Could my tears forever flow

These for sin could not atone

Thou must save and Thou alone

Rock of ages cleft for me

Let my hide myself in Thee

While I draw this fleeting breath

When my eyes shall close in death

When I soar to realms unknown

Now before Thy judgment throne

Nothing in my hand I’ll bring

Simply to Thy cross I’ll cling

Rock of age cleft for me

Let me hide myself in Thee

Children’s Sermon

Hymn     # 291     May the Mind of Christ My Savior          (Gray Psalter Hymnal)

New Testament Reading     Ephesians 4:1-16

4 I therefore, a prisoner for the Lord, urge you to walk in a manner worthy of the calling to which you have been called, 2with all humility and gentleness, with patience, bearing with one another in love, 3eager to maintain the unity of the Spirit in the bond of peace. 4There is one body and one Spirit—just as you were called to the one hope that belongs to your call— 5one Lord, one faith, one baptism, 6one God and Father of all, who is over all and through all and in all. 7But grace was given to each one of us according to the measure of Christ's gift. 8Therefore it says,

“When he ascended on high he led a host of captives, and he gave gifts to men.”

9In saying, “He ascended,” what does it mean but that he had also descended into the lower regions, the earth? 10He who descended is the one who also ascended far above all the heavens, that he might fill all things.) 11And he gave the apostles, the prophets, the evangelists, the shepherds and teachers, 12to equip the saints for the work of ministry, for building up the body of Christ, 13until we all attain to the unity of the faith and of the knowledge of the Son of God, to mature manhood, to the measure of the stature of the fullness of Christ, 14so that we may no longer be children, tossed to and fro by the waves and carried about by every wind of doctrine, by human cunning, by craftiness in deceitful schemes. 15Rather, speaking the truth in love, we are to grow up in every way into him who is the head, into Christ, 16from whom the whole body, joined and held together by every joint with which it is equipped, when each part is working properly, makes the body grow so that it builds itself up in love.
